Need some help with colour
1 Attachment(s)
Hi every one
I have been looking at this quilt for a week now and just can,t figure out that to do for the boarder around it . Not sure is I should go with a brighter colour or a dark colour. I made some Aunt Eliza,s stars for it but it just does not work . As I have said before my eye for colour is not the best . So if you have any ideas on how to make this quilt pop out for me i,d really appreciate it . And thanks for your help. Tom |
This beautiful quilt doesn't look like it needs borders, I think. It looks perfect just as it is. I would just bind it probably with the darkest color in the blocks.
It's beautiful, but if you want borders, how about a 1" finished gold from the center of your colours and then a 2" finished pink and then bind with the dark? Each of us have our preferences, that's what I would chose. :D
personally I'd want to put some more orange in that quilt for a border. perhaps some white first. Great quilt!!!

what about orange with white dots. Thanks for the help Tom |
Do you have enough of any of the fabrics in the quilt for borders? I would not introduce another fabric unless it had all the colors in it. I would put a 1 inch border of one of the fabrics, followed by a border the same size as the squares. I usually lay the fabrics with just the amount I am thinking for the borders showing. I leave it where I can see it often. Usually within a day I know if it will work or not.
I'd do a 2" orange and then a 4-5" dark (I can't tell if it's brown or burgundy) with the same dark color binding. I'd use colors that were solid or read as a solid. If you decide to use a white, I'd try to match the off-white of the quilt. It's a beautiful quilt, Tom.

You guys are so helpful .
thanks Tom |

Before you add borders...Are you aware you have one more strip on the right side than the left? One side ends with orange block even with center square. other side ends with pink. I would add one more strip then decide.
Lovely quilt doesn't need a border. But if you want one or need it for size, I would use the darkest color as my choice--seems it would frame it nicely.
looks good to me but if you want a border, the darkest color hides dirt and grime from being dragged about.

Good catch now i see it |
Glad you saw my post. I kept leaning my head sideways so started questioning why. Then it hit me. It is such a beautiful quilt. What is your backing? I would go for any one of the fabrics in the top. Perhaps half way between the light/white and the darkest fabric. Another choice would be to make narrow orange (center square) and wider middle color.
I would apply a royal blue binding and be done with it. Or red, or black or your fav color. There seems to be so much blending that a contrast would liven it up! It is a lovely quilt.
I am with the white, then a darker, then an even darker for the binding (or lash out and bind in white, which is not a great choice dirtwise, but could look effective).
I'm for no borders. The quilt is good just the way it is. A border would put those little squares in jail. That sounds rather harsh doesn't it? Just my opinion.
I would try different fabric. I would add an inside border so I would start with your lightest color which "floats" the quilt from the border. You could also try the orange if you didn't like the lightest color as the inside border. Darker usually give the best look so I would then try the brown.
I also vote for no borders. If you need it to be bigger, just continue the TATW pattern.
Auntie, you have a great eye! i don't think i'd ever have noticed that! what is this pattern called and is it one you sew individual squares? is there a tute? I am wondering how these are made

It,s just long strips of 2 1/2 inches and then sew them together . I liked sewing this one . Tom |
I must march to a different drummer. lol I would use the dark color for a very narrow strip and then a wider border of any of the colors in the quilt, but I am partial to the orange. Then I would bind it with the dark. Show us the finished product, please. The quilt is very nice, by the way.

I am with Susie. A narrow border and binding in the darkest with a lighter border in between. But I would not go too light
i would add the darker color; but watch out the quilting police are watching! (lol)
I'd add a thin border of the pinky-purple, then a wider border of the brown. Bind in brown also.
IMHO, no borders are needed. It looks great without the addition. Just bind it with the darkest color in the quilt.
if it were mine, I would start with the narrow dark color in the quilt, about 1" wide. Then I would use the pinkish fabric for a wider 2nd border. Bind it in the orange. Love the TATW pattern and this one is very nice. peace |
I would put a 1.5 " border around the entire quilt with the dark colour you have in the design. Then I would add a 3"-5" outer border using the lighter colours.
I agree with many who have already posted.... if you feel the need to add a border, I would do pink or (especially) orange and then apply a dark binding
I'm afraid we're not being much help. We're all over the place, but maybe someone is giving you a suggestion you really like. I would use the dark color as border, if you decide that you want one, and binding.
Tom its beautiful. you are doing wonderful. Congrats.
For me , this pretty quilt needs just a dark binding to frame it. Gorgeous quilt, by the way.
Well thanks every one for the help.
I,m off to the fabric store and still not sure what to do . So going to take the quilt with me and see what will work . Maybe like a lot of you guys are saying to just put a binding on it . You would think after I have been a printer for 40 years my eye for colour would be better lol. I just blame it on the lighting haha. Thanks All Tom |
It's a beautiful quilt! Seems to me you have a quite good eye for color! Personally, I'd use the darkest square color -- is it brown? -- for about a 4 inch border and maybe a narrower one or two inch border inside that in the coral/yellowish color....the one that looks like it has little suns in it. Whatever you do, it will be gorgeous because you've created a beauty here!

Another vote for no borders. I'd use the darkest color for binding and let that serve as the boundary.
I love this pattern - I have a couple in this pattern made in wool by my grandmother and they are prized possessions! I've had them since I was a teenager. :) Come to think of it, my gran didn't put borders on hers, which is probably why I think that's the best look for this pattern, LOL. |
I like your avatar :) have you tried putting the different colors next to one side and taking a picture, and seeing if you can get a better idea ? I would go with the darker color to ground it, and I would say it definitely pops :) Looks lovely :)
This quilt doesn't need a border. I would just find a nice color and bind it.
Absolutely gorgeous quilt! My tendency would be to go with the dark brown to set off the wonderful colors, but by the same token It could go without a border just as easily.
I think it's beautiful - without a border.
I would not have noticed the missing row ahead of time had Auntie not caught it. Wow, good eye! I would hope someone would "catch" that for me as well before binding, because I would study the thing afterward and be like, "Wow, that side has 11 white squares diagonally but this side only 10." Not being police, just a balance thing that I would eventually notice.
As for your question, I think the quilt is lively enough without a border. I would bind it in the dark chocolate unless it had to be bigger, in which case I might audition a batik with corals, off whites, and chocolates running through it. If that's the case, I'd do maybe a 2" inner chocolate border, then 5" outer batik, then chocolate binding. It's a beautiful Trip Around the World quilt, Tom! Good work. Best wishes in deciding how to finish it. PS I was tempted to try to convince you to go with a patriotic, striped border and see how you'd react. LOL |
