Need some help

I am making this to donate to a local charity event. The size of the quilt ended up being 45X89. I was unhappy with the size so I put it away and now need to finish this. I have been told to add a 10 or 12 inch med pink border and add some applique pink ribbons on the border.

I have this in my head as not looking right. I think it will look like I didn't want to finish the quilt so just added a big border.

I have seen on here where people have a computer program where they can add borders to show how it would look. If anyone has a program and could do that I would appreciate it.

I would like to add more bargello strips but I waited so long to finish this I can't get all the fabrics I used any longer. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate any advice.

I just can't see how it would look with big borders. It may be fine but I would like to see it. I can find 7 of the pink fabrics I used. Is there a way to add to it using only that amout of strips.

It is very beautiful 48" is an odd width size for the length you have made this. I think that if you have some of the pinks left over, I would make a small border on the sides and then a larger one. You will need to play with what you have left to see how it would turn out.

MTS 01-22-2013 01:26 PM

I think there's plenty of pink in the quilt already.

I'm a big fan of wide borders, and I would use the dark purple for the borders.

If you want, you can liberally sprinkle some pink ribbons on the border, where they will definitely stand out.

It will look fabulous!

skowron5 01-22-2013 01:26 PM

I know the size is odd. I should have looked at the pattern before I made it. I know a couple of people have used the same pattern. One made adjustments in the amount of fabric before she started and carried out a wave design. It was very pretty, but she figured it out before she started.

The other made it this size and they have not had their charity event yet so she is hoping the size will be o.k.

omgtimmcgraw 01-22-2013 01:27 PM

Omg that is beautiful. Were could I find that pattern. I would love to make one. I love pink and the breast cancer ribbon.

skowron5 01-22-2013 01:35 PM

The designer is Heidi K. Farmer it is called Ribbon Quilts Pink Bargello Ribbon. I bought it online last year. I would think it would still be available, but I am not sure what website I got it from. She donates $2 from each pattern to breast cancer research.

(sorry, I messed up the cropping and was too lazy to go back and fix it)

Here's an idea of what it would like with borders - darkest purple, med purple, med pink, lighter pink.

These borders are 10" (sides) and 3" (top/bottom) for a quilt that will be ~60x95

It's a beautiful quilt to donate. Be very proud of yourself. I personally like either one of the purples that were suggested. I think whoever bids on this (I assume it's an auction) will be so happy.

skowron5 01-22-2013 01:56 PM

Thank you so much. This is just what I was looking for. I think I like purple. It makes the design stand out.

Again Thanks.

Your top is beautiful I would make borders purple and you could make narrower borders until it is the width you want it. Like 2-1/2" - 3-1/2" etc. I have done that many times. I think smaller borders will look nicer. You could finish with a 4-1/2" or 5-1/2 unfinshed last border.

tesspug 01-22-2013 02:03 PM

I like the dark purple. Depending on the charity, what if you appliqued something on the border. Hearts come to mind because of the color.

So nice of you to add the border pictures for her to be able to decide. Any one of them would be beautiful as what she has to start with is gorgeous. I like the right side of both - the lighter purple or the lighter pink but it may look different when you look at the actual fabric choices you have. But you can see that the wide border is just fine. You did a beautiful job. Please post when completed.

MadQuilter 01-22-2013 03:04 PM

I would add a very narrow border of a pink (solid-reading) and then the wide dark purple to frame it. If you added more bargello strips it would take away from the ribbon design in the center in my opinion. I would also not embellish the border for the same reason.

I agree with narrower borders, maybe different shades of purple. I find the wide borders make that gorgeous quilt look out of sync, at least IMHO.

Buckeye Rose 01-22-2013 03:16 PM

You could add a border of the purple, narrower at the top and bottom so as not to make it much longer, but wider and more in proportion....like a 2" border at the top and bottom, but a 6" border on the sides.....if you don't have enough of one fabric, then do a 1" on top/bottom, and a 4" on the sides, then do another border of another fabric, also doing a wider set on the sides.....JMHO....but it is a beautiful quilt and someone will be very happy with it ;)

Tartan 01-22-2013 03:18 PM

I vote for the purple border too. That is going to be awesome finished! Your center looks wonderful.

barny 01-22-2013 03:22 PM

Either one of the purples will work really pretty. JMHO. I love it.

Barbshobbies 01-22-2013 03:22 PM

It looks long and narrow, but if I would ever get a quilt that beautiful, I would keep it for a sofa cover 0r for a day bed. But it seams you need it now, I liked the purple boarder.

QuiltnNan 01-22-2013 03:36 PM

i like the lighter purple for the borders. you did a great job with the bargello

skowron5 01-22-2013 03:42 PM

Thank you all for the nice comments. Now I have several idea's to choose from. I have been lucky that breast cancer has not been in my family, but I have friends that have survived. It is a cause that I really care about. I did not know the lady that the event is for, but I guess she was very special to our community. I hope they will get a bit of money for this.

quiltsRfun 01-22-2013 03:44 PM

In addition to adding the borders, how about taking a little off the top to make the proportions a little better. Or would that completely destroy the design. Just a thought.

TanyaL 01-22-2013 04:43 PM

If I were to bid on it, I would certainly rather have it with the border the same size all around it even though it would be a longer rectangle quilt. I think the narrow border on the top and bottom ruins it.

my-ty 01-22-2013 05:20 PM

I really like the dark purple border and I don't mind the difference the borders being shorter on the top/bottom than on the sides. Beautiful quilt!

mighty 01-22-2013 05:35 PM

Beautiful quilt!!! Boarders would look great in purple!

ghquilter53 01-24-2013 04:45 AM

I like the size and I think that the design is what makes it work. A narrow border in a dark purple or black would finish it off nicely and then you could put a wider border in a pink.

I made this same quilt several years ago for our local shop's "Quilt Pink" weekend, if any of you remember that national promotion for pink quilts. Anyway, I just added a pink border, but NOT one of the pinks I used in the quilt, so the fabric didn't look like it ws running into the border.

DJinSC 01-24-2013 07:00 AM

Skowron, that is a very beautiful quilt! I vote for the lighter purple border MTS has shown you. That would be soooo pretty! OMG -- I just realized it's the Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon. I totally did not see that when I looked at the pictures before and by everyone's comments thought it must be the fabric that represented breast cancer. Duh!

Lucy90 01-24-2013 07:09 AM

I like the purple. What a beautiful quilt and it should do well to raise money. Love it!

I love, love the dark purple borders. The 10" sides and 3" tops. That really makes the whole thing stand out!

Scrap41 01-24-2013 07:38 AM

I would put a border of black about the size of the black in the quilt and then a border of one of the pinks
and then a border of the purple. This would be like 2 1/2, 5, 7 inch borders. Audtion the fabrics before
cutting them out to see which ones you like. Your quilt is beautiful and it would be a shame if you didn't
finish it. Please show it again after you quilt it. Thanks for sharing it with us.

memepat 01-24-2013 07:43 AM

I think if you added a small 2" border then the larger dark purple it may make it come together better. Good luck!!!!

cjaneky 01-24-2013 07:57 AM

I'd do a 2" in the lighter purple.....then a 4 or 6" in in the lighter pink and then bind it in the dark purple

quiltapillow 01-24-2013 08:51 AM

how about trying a blue??

wildyard 01-24-2013 09:21 AM

Personally, I think I would do the 2" dark purple border on the sides, then a 5" scrappy piano key type border just on the sides, then a 2" dark purple border just on the sides, a 3 1/2" light purple or dark pink sides border, then a dark 2" border all the way around. Then bind in the dark. This would give you a quilt that is 74 x 93 and much more proportional in dimension.

jbj137 01-24-2013 10:26 AM

I think a border would be nice.
Not pink, there is enough already.

ube quilting 01-24-2013 03:40 PM

This is really very nice. Just add some borders with the colors you have and enjoy that this quilt will make someone happy. I would title the quilt "Rose Bud".
peace

I like Wildyards idea for the borders and even if you had to add some other pinks and purples to fill out the piano keys it would blend well and look great as a border.

KathyPhillips 01-24-2013 08:10 PM

beautiful quilt!! love the purple borders. It has enough pink.

faykilgore 01-25-2013 05:11 AM

That is a really gorgeous quilt and obviously a large amount of work and skill on your part.

skowron5 01-25-2013 06:50 AM

Thanks everyone. I have decided to go with one 10 inch on sides and 3 inch purple border on top. I have the material and hope to get to it next week. I will post my progress.

mimiof4 01-25-2013 01:30 PM

This is a beautiful quilt I think the purple borders are the way to go it really shows up pretty. You did an awesome job.
