I would like to make a friend of mine something for her 2 beloved dogs. One is smallish cutesy and one is not- smallish or cutesy! Actually, she's not that bad- just not to my liking- but they are both very special to her. So, I was wondering- do dogs use blankets ? (i.e. quilts) or do I need to make it a compete boxy type pad with foam or something in it? I'm leaning toward wanting to make them small blankets for their already existing beds. I have lots of denim and even some fabric that looks like mattress ticking.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Wanna know why I'm making these? She's getting married for her first time (she's 56 years old) has always just had pets- not children. When I looked on their bridal registry I noticed they had listed some pet stuff. I'd love to make her something for them since they have been a huge part of her life. If you have a better idea than a doggie blanket, please do tell....

I know people make quilts for their pets. I made 2 for my PUPPY and she has pulled both of them apart. I mean batting flying everywhere. Maybe it is just a puppy stage, I wanted to make her a cute little girly quilt, but now I am not sure.

If she asked for doggy thing I would make the quilts.

My small dogs definitely prefer blankets. My smallest likes to burrow into his blanket and wrap it completely around him, lol. The larger ones seem to prefer the sofas ;-)

My sisters dog loves to roll up in quilts. So I think it is a good idea.

I have 2 dogs - somewhat med sized. They both LOVE my quilts. I have one on my Futon in the quilt room and it takes all I have to keep an eye on them. They are good once they settle down, but they like to make "nests" with them and some of the seams have come undone. I don't mind too much - it was one of my firsts and I love that they love them.

Maybe do a smaller quilt - don't put too much time into it, and use bigger seam allowances. :)

I am thrilled when people think enough of my dogs to pick up a toy for them - your friend will be thrilled you make something comfy for them!! :)

Neither of these dogs are puppies anymore, so hopefully they've outgrown the chewing everything in site. :-)
Thanks for the "vote" for quilts.

when i was 18 i got my boyfriend a Huskey, and had alot of shirt scraps. (this is crazy, i know) b4 the rotary cutter came to being, i cut out 1" square, and sewed them tog. making a quilt 36 x 45 and hand quilted it. She loved it and dragged it around the house all the time. I wish i had that quilt now.

I made several quilts for my dogs. When I take a class and the quilt is lap size, I always give it to my dogs. I have them all over the house and they know the quilts on the floor are their 'blankies'. You could embroider the dogs names on the quilts to make them special.

Yes, dogs love quilts both to lay on and cover up with. I made 4 last year for both of my son's dogs. They are all really possessive of them. Mine were raggy-shaggy with tops of homespun and backing of flannel. Then I appliqued their names over the top in big block letters. Made them smaller than adult throws.
