This is the first time I've really used fabric that was specifically made for use in a border. I'm not sure how I should cut the side borders and need some opinions from all of you. My rows aren't sewn together so ignore that. Also there is going to be a 2" white inner border before the big border. With that in mind here are my questions;

1) I know the top and bottom borders need to be cut with the lines on the border fabric running with the quilt. My problem is with the sides. Do I cut the fabric so the bunnies stand up like in picture number 1, or do I cut the fabric the same way as I do for the top and bottom? If I cut the sides like the top and bottom, how do I face the bunnies on all four sides? All the bunnies in the quilt top stand the same way (up and down, obviously).

2) I think this fabric requires mitered corners, don't you? Do I need to miter my inner border as well (plain white) or can it be attached like normal? Or will it look dumb for one border to have straight seams, and the outer border to be mitered?

Yes, I would miter outer border - not really necessary for inner border.

Ditto.......love that Beatrix potter fabric with all the cute animals. I used that in the last Baby quilt I made.

I'd do it so all the borders have bunnies standing up and facing in. If that makes sense? Mitering would be nice.

I'm not sure which way you're talking about. Are you saying cut all the borders the same way on the fabric, and have the bunnies feet closest to the quilt top?

i would make all the bunnies stand the same direction. it m=just makes it seem to flow together better, but that is jut me.and i would miter the big boarder and not the white one. makes it easier on you and makes it more interesting.

i would attach the white border to the outer border and miter them together. why go around twice?

i would have all the bunny feet facing in, don't ask why. i don't know. i just 'see' it this way.

I mean have the bunny feet facing in like Butterfly wing. If a couple of them face outward, no biggie. It would just look better, imo to have most of the feet facing inward.

agree with both these points. stitch the white to the outer border and still only do one miter and it will look cool. and bunny feet to the center on all sides.

If you were making a wall hanging, I would make sure the border was cut/pieced so that all feet pointed down.

Okay, so all four sides with bunnies feet facing in, and miter both inner and outer borders together. Got it! :)

How wide will the borders be? The size shown?

Oh no, they won't be as wide as what is shown. I just unfolded the fabric some to show the pattern. I don't know for sure how wide they will be yet but somewhere in the 5" range probably.

If all the bunnies in the body of the quilt are "up and down" - I would have the bunnies in the border going in the same direction.

I would not miter any of the corners - but would put some kind of cornerstone in the corners/

Hmmmm, cornerstones. I hadn't thought of that. Yet another idea to confuse me that much more. :)

My only issue with standing all the bunnies "up and down" in the border is that on the sides the stone wall lines will be running against the quilt, instead of running with it like the top and bottom. I don't know if I like how that looks. But I don't know if I like the bunnies standing all different directions if I face their feet in either. Easiest solution would be just not to use this fabric, but the whole reason I made this quilt was for this fabric.

Well, if I may be so bold to say I would not use that dark fabric as anything on the front--border or not. It seems to take away from the softness of those baby colors. I would, however, make the entire backing with it thus not having a standing problem and it coordinates with the center fuzzy cut fabrics within the blocks. Good Luck. Your quilt is absolutely adorable. I would sew the two borders together and miter together as suggested. I think you should run the stone walls with the quilt and have the feet facing in. JMHO

Point well taken. I have to agree with All Thumbs. The bunny fabric seems quite bold compared to the sweet colors in the rest of the quilt. Which is beautiful by the way. Lucky little person who gets to call it their own!

what will the backing be?

I really appreciate your honesty. The same thought had gone through my mind at first (the border fabric being too dark), but I really wanted to use it. I didn't even think about using it for the back. The quilt is for my daughter (she's 3 1/2) and I knew she would love all those bunnies on the wall. I'm going to listen to my "little voice" and your opinion and just use this fabric on the back.

So problem solved on which way to face the bunnies! :) Now I just need to figure out what I'll do for borders.....

An idea -

Use the white for an inner border - then use all the pastels in a piano key type border

Way cute! If you don'r want to miter, you could make cornerstones out of the same hst's you used to build the blocks.

I like it with the feet closest to the quilt all the way around. And yes you would need to miter the borders.

That's kind of large of a border for that size quilt. I love your fabrics! I am wondering if your border will distract from the insides? Post a pic of it when finished please.

Yes, I just thought it was too bold for the border and not the soft look. Maybe a small border of your bunny fabric before a larger border of something simple and soft. Something more to give you food for thought.

This is soooo true! I showed my daughter the posts I received regarding questions I had making her quilt and she was quite impressed! Heard her telling a friend "a lady from Ireland was telling Mom she loved my quilt!"

I have no clue why I think that this would be great, too! I would miter.

i think mitering would look nicer than cornerstones because the quilt has a lot going on already. smooth borders would finish it off nicely. i think narrow white for separation and then a pastel from the quilt itself.
