It's a beautiful quilt, and I think its workmanship deserves to be framed by borders that will really show it off. I think I would lose the green and the floral borders, and add one made of the darker blue solid, width perhaps that of the floral plus half the green.
Love the quilt . Your relatives with love it and appreciate the love and care that has gone into it for them. They will treasure the quilt and probably need it as soon as possible and not become fanatical about the borders.
If you are worried about it being too ugly, I can give you my address. I love it.

Thanks Ranchwife. I agree... I believe the center needs to be "framed" with a solid fabric. Perhaps the green.... or the dark blue.
I would take off the green border. If you need the width I would try the dark blue. I like the the rest of the borders. Very pretty quilt. Just don'te the green border. I would leave the rest
I agree with faykilgore, I love it as is minus the dark fabric, that to me is what is the ugly factor. If you feel it NEEDS the dark fabric, I'd put it in closer to the main body eliminating it together and binding it with the green or either of the lighter blue borders.
I agree I would remove the flower printed border. This it would be better with a solid border, thinner green then maybe solid yellow.
I woul not change a thing!
That's definately NOT UGLY by amy means!!!!! I like it.
I'd remove the green border as it is a bit jarring when viewed as part of the quilt - the narrow blue one and floral one are both great, though. I'd just bind the quilt with the floral. Lovely quilt!
I disagree, that quilt is not ugly at all, it's just not to your taste. I would finish it as it is, quilt it, bind it and donate it to raise money for your aunt and uncle. It's a good thing you are doing. When I was a girl about 10 years old, we lost our home to a fire and the church people donated quite a bit of stuff to us to help us out. Thanks for helping your aunt and uncle.
I agree that the green border has got to go. When I first saw the Quilt I thought the green was part of the design wall. Silly me!
I love the quilt - mostly, but the dark green seems to overpower it. Personally, I would make the green narrower, just for that pop of color placed inside the floral, and keep the blue/yellow floral as the outside border. It's so nice that you want to finish it and put it up for 'auction'.....best of luck.
I like the center and the flowered border. Actually I did not notice the outer green border. What size do you want the quilt to be? I would remove the green border and if needed for size add a 1" dark blue inner border and then another outer floral borderthe same as you already have. I would try to keep the removal of borders to a minimum since all that ripping will stretch to border fabric adding to a wavy edge. also bind in blue. Show us the finished quilt. Good job!!!!!
That is NOT an ugly quilt! I think it is very pretty. I, too, did not notice the green outside border at first. It kind of blends with the scenery. So if you think you must do something, remove that. Otherwise I think it is beautiful! Good luck with the benefit.
Don't change a thing.
It is beautiful. I love the colors. |
So, where's the ugly??? I'm not see'n it. Looks beautiful to me!
I, too, didn't notice the dark green border. That being said, I would use the dark blue as the first inner border. However I would make it super skinny. Even skinnier than the light blue border. Than use the other borders in the order in which they are now presented. Since the dark green color is definitely used in the "windmills", I would bind the quilt with the dark green.
Be sure to post a completed picture with reference to this thread. |
I like the center, It is very pretty. I agree, remove the dark green border, I you really need another border, use blue or yellow.

This is the "Wind Blown Petals" pattern. I have never been at all happy with it. I classify it as the ugliest quilt I have ever made. Actually... I like the center part.....I'm thinking I need to change the borders as the entire quilt is so busy. Is that the problem? I truly appreciate your thoughts and suggestions to change this 'ugly duckling' to a striking beauty. :) |

I would like it better with a pale blue or even better a yellow border, love yellow, green is too dark/wrong shade. Being an army wife for 20 years anything close to army green I do not like anyway, too many uniforms washed and Ironed I guess, and they were a bear to iron in late 80's early 90's. Otherwise very pretty and love the blues and yellows.

I love it just the way it is. I wouldn't change a thing!
 I think that the quilt and its blue/floral borders are great, but the green one is distracting, at least in the picture
If this is the ugliest quilt you've made, you're doing pretty good! If you framed the center in yellow instead of the small flower around the blocks, they would look like the pinwheels are floating, which might be kind of cool. Otherwise, I'd put a small solid border around the center to break the pattern before the other borders. I think what's happening with the small print is that it's the same as what's in the blocks, so t looks like the blocks are "leaking" into the border. I think changing this border will help a lot. But other than that, I think it's fine!

I agree the dark green needs to come off. Also a narrow solid around the center blocks would stop the eye, giving a place for the eyes to rest. Then add the blue floral or some yellow. Remember, every time you add a border you must measure through the center of the quilt, including any borders you have added, and cut the border that size. Do this both ways on the quilt, sides and top/bottom. The border is to fit the quilt, not the other way around. Notice the fullness in the green border. Every border added without measuring and fitting adds fullness to the outside of the quilt. This makes a happy quilt with all the borders waving at each other. Also add the borders with the quilt on the down side next to the feed dogs to work any fullness on the edges of the piece work.
Can you tell I am a long arm quilter and have seen up to six inches added to the outside of the quilt when many borders are added and added, just laying the border on the bed of the machine, sewing it on, and lopping off any extra border. You have a beautiful quilt and it well worth the effort to correct. Lu in TN |
What ranch wife said???
Ditto on seeing the green border; I completely overlooked it. So, I would remove it and bind it with the blue.
I love the quilt just the way it is and NO it is not UGLY.

I like the look without the outer green. JMHO.
Count my vote as another to just remove the dark green outer border. The rest of the qullt is lovely as it is.
I'd remove the green outside border and just leave it off, or, if you need it for size, replace it with, perhaps, the darker blue in the pinwheels. I think the quilt is lovely; the only distraction I see is the light blue pinwheels. They interrupt the flow and movement of the others, I think; their paler color are like gaps in the overall pattern. Just imo, you understand; others may have different reactions. But, if you agree and wanted to do that much work, you could replace those blocks with the darker pinwheel blocks, all of which I like. The narrow blue border and the blue and yellow border I like a lot.

That was my exact thought. |
I'd get rid of the green border... then when quilted it will be a beauty!
I think it's lovely as is.
But if you insist on calling it ugly, I will be forced to ask you to send it to me........LOL |
I think I would just take off the green and leave the rest just as it is. I love it but the green is out of wack.
easiest fix take off the green. to make it pop a narrow of the dark green or dark BLUE next to. body the quilt.
I also think the green border is the problem. If you need it, I'd suggest a dark blue, or maybe a narrow yellow followed by a dark blue
This is a pretty quilt. But maybe I would take the green border off and just go with the flowered border.
