Need suggestions on my 'ugly' quilt... please.
1 Attachment(s)
This is the quilt-top I made a few years ago and have decided to quilt it for an upcoming benefit for my aunt and uncle who lost their home to a fire.
This is the "Wind Blown Petals" pattern. I have never been at all happy with it. I classify it as the ugliest quilt I have ever made. Actually... I like the center part.....I'm thinking I need to change the borders as the entire quilt is so busy. Is that the problem? I truly appreciate your thoughts and suggestions to change this 'ugly duckling' to a striking beauty. :) |
Looks fine.

I like the center also and agree that the borders need to be different. What about taking the green outside border and moving it next to the blue border and binding the whole thing with the fabric that is between the blue and green border. To me, the green border gets lost and all that is seen is the blue and floral border.
Everyone will have a different view so do it how you like it. For me I would replace the green border with the Yellow fabric. I just like a softer look. I really like the quilt & love the colors.
If you have more of one of the blue florals, I would remove the green or cut it back to a narrow border, and then put on another blue floral border. The center part is very nice, it is the green border that needs changing.
Thanks Ranchwife. I agree... I believe the center needs to be "framed" with a solid fabric. Perhaps the green.... or the dark blue.

I agree it looks fine the way it is but would be better with solid border.

I agree that it would be better with a solid border. Nice job.

until i saw ranchwife's post, i didn't notice the green border on the outside. i think it's the problem. if the size is OK without it, i'd just take it off.

I'd take the green border off and use it as the binding...I really like the quilt "buy" the way :)

I love it as is!!! :)

I didn't notice the green on the outside, I think it's too much. Take it off and bind it!!

I'm with QuiltnNan, I didn't notice the green border. I would just take it off. Otherwise the quilt is pretty. It just seems to me the green just doesn't go.

I guess your ugly is beautiful to someone else ... ME ... what is not to LOVE about this quilt. Leave it alone.

I agree with the others- the green border is what is throwing it off for me. If you dn't need the green border for size, I'd pull it off and use the dark blue for binding. If you *do* need it for size, do you have enough of the fabrics to insert borders before the blue floral? I really like that as the final outside border, and would add the small yellow/florals as inner borders, and still bind with the dark blue.
I agree on I love the center but the flower border might be to much. go with a solid. maybe a darker blue that the light blue strip you have now. look good.

It's a beautiful quilt. The mossy green in the center is a nice contrast but I'm not crazy about it as a border. I think if you removed the green border and left it like that it would be perfect. Or if you wanted to replace the green border with something else, I think if you could find something a similar color to the darkest blue would be lovely.
The blue in the outer border is a warm blue whereas the blues in the center are cooler. Likewise with the yellow - it is too bright for the slightly greyed out version in the center. It is beautiful though. You did a great job. Lucky it's just the outher border that is giving you grief, huh?
I would take off all four borders and add one wide border of the plaid.
Thanks everyone! Your suggestions have greatly helped....... I believe the majority believe the floral and green border have to go.....
Depending on the size you need I would just dump the green outer border without adding another border back and bind in the floral or the light blue of the narrow border.
I agree with most everyone - that green border must go. It ruins an otherwise nice quilt.

I also think the borders should be redone. My vote, remove the first light floral border. It makes it too busy. And remove the Dk Green outer border. It doesn't look like it goes with the rest. (Just my opinion though.) The center is beautiful and interesting. Good Luck.
Wow I would take your ugle duckling anytime.....I like it a BUNCH!!!!!!
I like it also but without the green border.
I think you must be fishing for compliments, because that quilt is sure pretty enough.
Yes I too would take the green border off and if large enough just bind it.
I started thinking I was color blind because I didn't see a green border, only blue. But on the third look I saw the green solid border and yes, I agree, I would just take that off and bind it with the blue solid. It's very lovely, by the way.
Oh, leave the floral boarder. It softens the quilt. Very lovely!
Delete the green outter border, and bind it.
How funny, I couldn't figure out what you were all talking about, I thought it was fine. I didn't realize the dark green was an additional border. I would remove the dark green borber as well. It would be fine without it. I probably would have used the dark green as my first border and kept it narrow.
Depending on the size you are seeking, I would either take off the green and bind it; or I'd make the green a skinny frame and then add more floral or blue to get it to the size you need. Very pretty.
