My husband had an operation last spring to remove a very aggresive melanoma. Last week, DH went for a follow up exam and while there, the Dr. did two biopsies and sent him for a CT scan. Well of course, we were on pins and needles. Now hubby has been on night shift and we turn the phone off until time for him to get up. When we checked for messages yesterday, there was a request to call the physician's assistant. Now it had only been two days since the biopsy and we of course assumed the worst immediately. It was already past time for the office to close so we knew we had to wait til morning. Then I remembered that I had a card given to us in the spring with a cell phone number on it. Thinking it was the assistant, I called only to have the Dr. answer. I explained why I called and was told he was about to go into surgery and would have to call me back. Well I thought that was the last we would hear last night. Two hours later the phone rang and it was the Dr. He said he had gone back to his office after finishing the surgery and reviewed the file for DH. He didn't want us to spend the night worrying because everything came back clear. What a blessing he is!
So the suggestions I need are about what I can make him as a thank you for going out of his way? Should I make a wall hanging, a lap quilt, placemats, what? I don't know anything about his tastes or home life. I really want to do something but just can't decide what to do. |
How about some homemade muffins in one of those quilted baskets? And congratulations on the good news.

Hello, my mom is a retired RN so if this Doc is anything like most medical people he spends most of his time at the hospital. So maybe a mug rug with a coffee cup would be nice.
What a wonderful man to help ease your worries - Bless his heart
Maybe ask his office staff what kinds of things he likes ? Does he drink coffee ? Maybe a mug with a mug rug ? |
What a kind compassionate man, to have made sure he could ease your worries after having been in surgery!
I'm sorry that I don't have much in the way of a suggestion for a "Thank-you' gift. The only physician-related thing that pops to mind are the pictures Norman Rockwell did! I'm sure he would appreciate a nice warm quilt to wrap up in and catch some Zzzz's when he has a break during a long shift! Prayers for a Happy & Healthy New Year for your DH and you! |
I have no sugguestions, but just wanted to say how kind the Dr. was by calling before the weekend! That is a GREAT man!
I like the idea of a mug & mug rug.
It's good to know there are still docs like that around. The mug and mug rug are a great idea. Does he have a couch in his office? Maybe a lap quilt to use if he can sneak a nap in between surgeries.
HUGE CONGRATS on the clear results!!!!!
Walmart has some pretty cool fabric with Bugs Bunny in a white lab coat saying ''whats up doc''. About 5 bucks a yard. I used it to make a small table runner and mug rugs for my Veternarians. Combine the mug rugs and coffee cups with some really good Starbuck coffees or hot chocolates and be sure to sign the thank you card.....he will really enjoy what ever you do!! jodi in leavenworth |
what are your quilting skills and how much time do you want to put into it.
I am so glad you got good news. Of course we all think the worst when we are waiting for news from tests like that. Thank God, your news was good. All the ideas above sound like good ones to me. What ever you decide, I am sure he will be grateful...
Thank you all. I do like the idea of the mug rug and coffee cup. I have never made one but there are so many beautiful ones on here, I will do a search for ideas.
Congratulations on the clear tests!!! Having had to wait for answers before, I am so glad your DH is in the hands of such a compassioniate Dr. I like the mug rug myself. .
What a wonderful caring man. That was so nice of him. And congrats on the great news.
Doing the happy dance for your DH. And you're lucky to have such a caring doctor.
As a 28 year plus hospital volunteer, I'd suggest you go ask one of his office helpers. They will know more about his home life and likes than anyone bar his wife. Cherish this doctor, they all aren't like this. |

Sounds like a darn good idea to me. A lap robe AND an alarm clock. |
Aw, congrats on the great news!
What a nice man! You should definitely make him something. Our doc has a framed crocheted rectangular doily that says his name on his office wall - maybe you could do something similar that is quilted.
Cherish him at least. What a wonderful thing to do, knowing you were waiting and worrying, easing your mind was a blessing.
I like the idea of a quilt. I think a mug rug is not a big enough thank you. I know how important his compassion was to you and your DH and he is much more special to ease your worries than something small. A very personal wall hanging for his office that "says" how special he is or a quilt he can nap under is my recommendation.
congrats on the good news
Nice doc. I used to have one like that. Anyway, I would make him a wall hanging for the office. My orthopedic surgeon had many quilts hanging in his office.
Wonderful News Maybe a Wallhanging
Yea...great news!!!! :-D

Cherish this doctor, they all aren't like this. Ditto. As a nurse in a doctors office I agree. My doc only drinks one cup of java a day and that is at home. Now if you gave her a card for a Mexican restaurant she would love it.... |
Love the suggestions you've received. I'm sure whatever you make will please him, just knowing you appreciated his efforts enough to hand make something special just for him.
Wish more doctors today were like him. Congratulations on your wonderful news! |
What a great Dr.! Seems like Drs. have so much on their plate that sometimes they can be a little insensitive. Thank God your Dr. really has a heart & cares about his patients feelings. My Dr is the same. She is great!
That is fantastic news about your DH. |
As a retired RN I would suggest some baked goodies he can share with the office staff and a nice card or note just saying you appreciate his extra effort= Joyce (retired )labor & delivery nurse)
I agree with the idea of baked goodies and maybe a liner for a bread basket. The reward needs to be quicker than any handmade project that will take time. The mug rug is a good idea but doctors don't stay in one place. Men like food so the baked goods sound like a good bet. Maybe a fleece throw? Again, needs to be rewarded quickly.

Yea for the great news! I made my doctor one of those scrub hats they wear using novelty fabric. It was small, easy to make and she seemed so happy to have had me hand make something for her. Wish I could remember where I found the pattern
My DH is an MD and their website at work includes some personal interests...actually, they haven't loaded those yet, but they were supposed to. You might find something there. I would say something small, like a mug rug, a glasses case if he wears glasses, a shopping type bag for hauling books...
My hubby has a few "doc" dwarf things. This time of year you might even find a doctor tree ornament on clearance. After all, its the thought that counts. But do skip the chocolate and sweets, we get way too much of that stuff. If you have to do food, do fruit or nuts or cheese. |
I work for a Dr and every year He wants a quillow from me his wife says he loves the ones I make him because he is tall and I make it extra long so while he is relaxing on the couch doing his research on a pt before the appt the next day his feet are warm in the pocket
What a special Dr. and what wonderful news! Happy New Year!
Check with his office to see if he has a favorite kind of coffee he likes, an insulated mug and a couple of mug rugs. You have one wonderful doctor! He's a keeper! :-D
You would be surprised, but most doctors do not get many thank you gifts. Most people are unsure of what to give and end up giving nothing. I would make him a quilt for his office. Go all out! Lap quilt is probably the right size. Imagine when patients ask about the quilt and he tells them that a patients wife made it for you. He will be so proud. And the next time a family waits for news, good or bad, he will remember how much it meant to you and yours. Go for it!
From a Nurse of 23 Years!!! |
Any of the clothes sewing books in the uniform section have patterns for surgical hats.
Thank you all for suggestions. I am going to contact his nurse and see what I can find out about his likes and dislikes. Will keep you posted as to what I am doing.
WOW What wonderful news, and what a good Dr to care enough to go out of his way. Do you remember how the office is decorated? Maybe something in the line of a wall hanging for there?
