Thanks for your input.

A couple years ago, I found an easy quilt website for Preemies to Teens. Many patterns to choose from here. Made 3 Rail Fence Quilts in 1 month for my teenage granddaughters.

I have made a couple of quick baby quilts recently. I made a patchwork quilt using a charm pack (42 5 in. squares), then added a border. Very quick.

nursie76 08-01-2010 05:33 PM

G'ma Kay, your quilt is so pretty! Very Girlie! I love it. Great idea.

EdieClay - I hadn't thought of charm packs, that is a great idea, but need to make this one from stash.

Update: I have the main part of my 4-Patch almost together. Yipee!

I quite often use panels and add borders to them. Then for quilting, I outline some of the figures in the panel.
1000 pyramids is a quick and easy quilt to put together also if you make the triangles not too small and don't make 1000 of them. Then I just stitch in the ditch at an angle across the quilt. It sounds like you have a lot of good ideas.

There is a tutorial here on using jelly rolls. It sews up fast & is very cute.

Looking for Help? My grandson is heading off to college in a few weeks, and am looking for a quick quilt to make for him to take with him. The college is up north and gets very cold in the winter. Any ideas?

lclang 08-01-2010 06:42 PM

Denim quilts are nice for college kids. They double as picnic quits, throw rugs, whatever! I've made about a dozen of them in various patterns but my favorite was a large 9 patch with a jeans pocket in the middle square. Everyone loves them.

think i have just the pattern the doctor ordered....it a "6 hour quilt" by kaye wood. there is no quilting required. it is layered and stitched, folded forward hiding seams, etc. you use a high loft batting and the result is amazing. when you have gotten to the size you want, simply bind it and there it is. if you have trouble finding this pattern, let me know. this looks like a high dollar comforter but will last for a lifetime. you will love it. i am making one now for a friend's expected grandson in houston. i use flannel and denim for boys. you can pm me if you are interested.
Thanks for your input.

Okie quiter - I will look that one up. Sounds really interesting. I just love this board...I learn so much!

As for this quilt, I am now putting the 1st border on. Sew, the top is just about pieced....getting it quilted, well that will have to wait for another day.

Judie 08-01-2010 07:44 PM

Okie Quilter.. did you order Kay Wood's pattern off of her website? Or is there a download for it someplace? It sounds like a good one to have on hand for those 'gotta have a gift' emergencies!

Annz 08-01-2010 07:51 PM

I find nine patches to be quick and easy. You can find some cute baby prints, cut them up and add colorful sashing or cut solid squares with the prints and sew them up.

A warm wishes quilt would be fast. God bless.

I just made my grandson a fleece quilt with a brushed cotton backing. 3yards of fleece, and 6 yards of flannel will do it. You can do all sorts of stitching to bond the 2 layers together. Look at my thread, a quilt I made for my college bound grandson. You don't have to get that fancy. You could even leave the edges "raggy". The fleece won't fray but the flannel will.

Thanks Gran of 6, This really helpsI will check it out!

How about an easy pinwheel quilt? Took me less than 3 hours to put this together and then another hour quilting. It's the Downy Comfort quilt pattern. and if you use the easy pinwheel method it's so easy!

My pattern was a simple four patch with blocks...but for the one from my stash, I chose to do pinwheels instead of the 4 patch block

When I went to the Downy Comfort Quilt Project online, it shows a heart quilt. Are there other patterns?

My pattern was a simple four patch block alternating with simple fabric block. I chose to make the pinwheels instead of the four patch. Wanted to try out the new technique and see if it was really simple -- and it was!

The absolute fastest I think would be to make something fusible. (I just took a class on this yesterday.) You can choose a large baby print and cut out shapes/designs and fuse them to another piece of fabric. If you use Steam-A-Seam2 that comes on a roll like fabric (not the tiny strips!) it provides a very strong bond and no outline stitching is required.

Great idea!!

hi, yes, it is a great pattern to have. i have made them large enough for a bed or large lap quilts. it is appropriate for all types of fabric...flannel, denim, cotton....it is reversible and the pattern on the fabric will set the theme. it is suitable for babies to the elderly. it is a 12-page soft cover instruction booklet i bought in 1994. you might be able to find it from her website. this was before e-mails or websites, so the booklet only has her address and phone number. 517-345-3028. the catalog number is KWB20. 6 hour quilt.... is the title.

Yes, I think there are 4 or 5.

Try Quilts for Kids.org?

Janice Thompson 08-02-2010 05:22 PM

KAY WOODS HAS A 6 HOUR QUILT THAT IS REVERSIBLE. YOU START OUT WITH A 6" x 18". I DO 3 ROUNDS THEN BIND IT. THE QUILTING IS DONE AS YOU GO. I USUALLY USE 2 COLORS FOR EACH SIDE. THE BATTING I USE LOW LOFT THAT HAS BEEN LEFT OVER FROM LARGER QUILTS. THERE IS A BOOK AVAILABLE.

Judie 08-02-2010 06:21 PM

Thanks for the info for the 6 hour quilt.. I'll be looking into it. Sounds like a great one to know how to do. I appreciate the response, Okie quilter and Janice.. thanks.

Here's my latest baby quilt. Very easy

hereca622 08-03-2010 12:26 PM

I haven't read all the other links, but here is an idea.

You can make three different quilts with three yards of fabric.

This is a tutorial for a flannel strip rag quilt. I cut, ironed and sewed this together in 1 1/2 hrs. It came out beautiful and sooooo soft!

Janice Thompson 08-03-2010 04:10 PM

THIS QUILT COULD ALSO BE MADE REVERSIBLE AND A QUILT AS YOU GO. SIMPLY BY SEWING THE CORNER BLOCKS TO THE BORDER STRIP. THE CENTER STRIP SEW THE TOP AND BOTTOM BORDER. NOW YOU ATTACH THE 2 CENTER STRIPS WRONG SIDES TOGETHER WITH THE BATTING SANDWICHED, ZIG-ZAG TOGETHER ALL AROUND. NOW YOU ATTACH THE SIDES --RIGHT SIDES ON THE FRONT AND BACK (ON THE BACK YOU ATTACH BATTING. MAKE SURE THE BATTING IS ON THE BOTTOM. --STITCH. YOU BRING THE BOTTOM PANEL UP --THE BATTING IS SANDWICHED AND STITCH THE SIDES TOGETHER. BIND THE FIUNISHED QUILT. THIS IS BASICALLY THE KAY WOODS METHOD.
