One of my former clients with the program work for just had their second baby. I just graduated them from our program, but with our program each new mum gets a hand made quilt for her babe to play and do tummy time on. This young couple was so committed to being good parents (and are) all during our 2-1/2 years together. I promised 2 weeks ago when they graduated that I would stop by to see him when he came and i would like to give them a quilt for their new little one. Well, I got a message last night that he had arrived, so...Other than using a panel, what would be the quickest pattern to use for a baby quilt?
Thanks for your input. |
a strip quilt in baby prints would be fast and easy.
|
I do nine patches and snowballs together for a very quick quilt. I have always liked the way they turn out.
|
rag quilt
|
Both of those sound good...hmmm I wonder if I can find time to hit the LQS during lunch?

Rail Fence is another pattern that goes together quickly.
Theres so many childrens prints to choose from sometimes choosing the fabrics takes longer than the pattern. |

I do these when I need it quick.
Zander's quilt |
All good ideas. You could also just put 5" squares together to make a scrappy quilt. Add backing and batting pillowcase style, turn, stitch the opening closed and quilt diagonally through the squares. They go together real fast.
|
Lots of fun ones come to mind - warm wishes (I think) is the name of another. It consists of a block of 3 strips that alternates with a block uncut. That way you could showcase a cute baby print in the uncut block, and strip piece coordinates for the other blocks.

I would do a D9P in baby prints

Just gave one away, 9 patches and squares. Found the fabric at Joann's but also saw it at Wal-Mart two weeks ago. Was going to do snowballs but the corner pieces would have covered too much of the print.

I saw an adorable "quickie" in our local quilt shop this week. It was just 2-1/2 strips (jelly rolls) sewn together vertically to make about a 36x44" quilt. It was so colorful and cute. There was one done by the rag method, which could easily be done in one sitting, and another one done by regular sandwich method and machine quilted in the ditch.

I just finished a 9 block quilt in 10" squares using baby print fabrics here and there. Finished size turned out to be 40"X40". Was able to make it from start to finish in 2 days.
|
The fastest baby quilt I know are rag quilts . . .and the ones made in Minky fabric are the rage right now.
|
Thanks everyone for the all the wonderful ideas! I have such a great selection to choose from. I just remembered that I have some Winnie the Pooh fabric from a quilt that I started years ago...I am going to see if I can find it. I am sure what I have will work with once of these great quilts.
Delilah, what a sweet quilt. Love it! Thanks for the idea and for sharing. |

I do these very quickly:

Thanks Pam, that is so bright and cheery! Love it!
|
Pam, I just love this little quickie quilt! So colorful and easy thing to do! Even for a larger size quilt, it would go super fast and so easy to construct! Thanks for sharing with us, it is a wonderful idea!
|
I had done a Trip Around the World in 5" blocks and backed with fleece, quilt stitch diagonals (no batting) in a single day easy. Still managed to do laundry & feed family, too.
|
I am soon to start a quickie baby quilt, using a purchased pattern (OMG - I HAVE NEVER PURCHASED A PATTERN BEFORE!! I FEEL ASHAMED. It was a download, so you don't have to worry about shipping time.) but it's basically one large log cabin block, measuring 37" square I think. The pattern is called "Baby Steps" from e-patternsCentral.com. I'm doing it pink/lavender, but would be cute with kid's prints also.

Thanks everyone for your input.
I think I have decided on a 4 patch type with solid blocks in between. It is the same or similar to what is on the QFK's site. All your ideas have been great and will be stored for future reference as I have 2 more to make in the future. The folks on this board are awesome! I ask for help and the response is immediate and overwhelming. You all are tops! |

ksea - I agree. Can't be too careful. But I do have a lot of flannel saved up and a Rag quilt is definitely on my "to-do" list.
|
This one is the quickest ever.
Assorted width strips across the width of the fabric. Sew as many strips together to make a 50" long quilt. Add a border or not. Layer, quilt and bind. |
yellow brick road look hard bur go together fast. 6 fat quarters, I just buy 3 half yard and cut my own cheaper.
|
Both the Yellow Brick Road and the strip pattern sound interesting. I will book mark and put on my list. Thanks so much.

"snowballs"?????? Cut a square of fabric. Then cut four small squares from another fabric. Draw a line on the diagonal. Place the four small squares on the corners of the larger square and sew on the diagonal. That, my friend, is a snowball. |
Connecting Threads has a new pattern, Quilt-as-you-go Coins quilt. It's under the freebies.
|
I use the "cheater cloth," which might be the "panels" you mentioned. I just put a binding on and that is it. The others are great ideas, and I am going to save this page for the next baby quilt. (So I can be a little more creative.!)

Here's a simple one. Only takes an afternoon, including the cutting.

JackieG - What a sweet quilt. Actually, that is the pattern I have decided to use. I should be ironing the material now...instead here I am catching up on all the board happenings! lol

JackieG, I made one of these quilts for the Downy Quilts program. Loved it and it was very easy and quick. Turned out great even for a beginner like me!!
