Need your opinion. Will this work?

DH and I were expecting our 10th great granddaughter the middle of November. I made "Marlee" this baby rag quilt as the colors for her room were mint green and purple.

On Friday, the doctor sent Katie (the baby's mom) to the hospital as they suspected she had pneumonia. After tests and x-rays, they decided that as long as Katie was pregnant, they couldn't treat her pneumonia agressively and she wouldn't improve. They decided to take the baby at 31 weeks. Michael Alexander (yes it is a boy and not a girl) was born and came in at 2 lb. 6 oz. and 15" long.

And now my question. Do you think this baby quilt is suitable for a little boy or should I make another one that tends to be for a little boy? He won't be home for a while so I will have time if you think I should do a different one.

zozee 09-01-2013 04:59 AM

Awww, precious baby boy, and so so tiny. God love him, and I hope your daughter and he are getting stronger by the day. Congratulations on your 10th--can I even fathom 10 grandchildren, let alone 10 greatgrandchildren??!!!--what a feeling that must be. I hope I live to see that in my own family.

As for your question, what are you inclined to do? What does your heart say? Because, when it comes to quilts, they have a way of speaking from the heart.

Grandma Bonnie 09-01-2013 04:59 AM

Congratulations on your new great-grandbaby! I hope he thrives! I think those two colors are pretty much gender neutral, although I remember my granddaughters always loved purple (& pink) and not so much the boys. With plenty of time, I might make a new one for the baby boy and save this one for another grandbaby (or other baby). But if they keep the room those colors the quilt would match fine.

xsquilter 09-01-2013 05:00 AM

Congratulations on the birth of your grandson! It just goes to show us that we "really" don't know the gender until the babe is born! Sending many prayers for a speedy recovery for Katie & Michael.
The quilt is wonderful! I would ask Katie what she thinks. I suspect she won't be changing room colours at the moment & may just love having this. Maybe you could make something more "boy like" anyway. If it was me, I would love this quilt regardless.

Funny, even in this day and age of great imaging technology, the "she" was a "he" after all. 00giggle--00

Nanny's dollface 09-01-2013 05:03 AM

First off congratulations on your new addition. Prayers stormin your way for your daughter's speedy recovery and your grandson's health. Love the rag quilt. I would give it to your great grandson as the fabrics are unisex. I think Insee frogs in it so what better critter for a boy!

Old_Rosebud 09-01-2013 05:04 AM

Awww. Prayers for Katie and Michael (and dad!). The blanket you made is very pretty. I agree with zozee - what is your heart telling you?

alikat110 09-01-2013 05:09 AM

Unfortunately, the quilt has a feminine feel to it , IMHO. Hope one of his cousins like it! I would make a new one. It is very cute! Prayers and hugs to everyone in this difficult time.

Aria 09-01-2013 05:09 AM

I would give it to your new grandson. It'll be something they'll always talk about...."you were supposed to be a girl".. :) And, I agree, the frogs fit perfectly!

omacookie 09-01-2013 05:15 AM

Prayers for Michael and his Mom. The quilt is perfect for him. When he finds out who made the quilt for him he will not only love the quilt but you also. Hugs

bigsister63 09-01-2013 05:21 AM

I would make another one and save this for your next GGD!

twinkie 09-01-2013 05:26 AM

I may not have explained it properly. The quilt along with a mint green crocheted blanket were already mailed to them so it would be there for the baby shower. The shower has not even taken place yet. They are 750 miles away from us.
Thanks for the nice comments

Dolphyngyrl 09-01-2013 05:54 AM

I think the colors are gender neutral. I think it can be for a boy, there is no pink or flowers in it

QuiltnNan 09-01-2013 06:30 AM

Since the room colors are the same colors, I'd give it anyway. You can wait until his personality develops to do a quilt suited just to him.

tessagin 09-01-2013 06:34 AM

First Am sending prayers from the gulf for everyone's recovery and future good health. 2nd Ditto what Zozee stated. He's a beautiful little one.

mighty 09-01-2013 06:41 AM

I think the quilt will be just fine!!! Glad to hear mom and baby do well!!

quiltingloulou 09-01-2013 07:09 AM

My prayers to all your family but especially for that gorgeous little boy Michael and his Mom. I'm sure he will be a fighter and prove stronger every day. I like the quilt you have done, especially if it matches the decor in his nursery. However, if you do have any doubts, just listen to your heart, you will get the answer from deep inside. God bless you.

pollyjvan9 09-01-2013 07:13 AM

Congrats on you new great grandson. It sounds like you were due a boy. Personally, I love the quilt you made. Isn't that frogs on the flannel? I think it will be perfect unless you think it looks too girly. Such a little one needs lots of love and snuggles and that quilt will give him a lot of both.

CorgiNole 09-01-2013 07:19 AM

Congrats on your new grandson. I think the quilt is gender neutral and will be cherished.

My 12 year old son asked for all of his school supplies to be purple this year.

Prayers flowing for your new great-grandson, granddaughter and your entire family!!! Oh, love Michael's quilt!!!

Sewnoma 09-01-2013 08:23 AM

I think the colors are perfect! Purple and green happen to be my husband's favorite colors and he's definitely male, LOL. :)

It's a very cute quilt, too. Congrats on the new family member!

susie-susie-susie 09-01-2013 09:39 AM

I think the quilt is perfect, especially since it matches the room. I think I see frogs in the embroidery and that is definitely boy. If you are concerned, make another with cars or trucks on it--one can never have too many quilts, especially quilts made by their great grandmother. He is so cute, keep us posted on his progress, and your granddaughters too.

Sunnye 09-01-2013 09:40 AM

Congrats on baby boy!
I made my great nephew a green and purple quilt. They love it.

gramajo 09-01-2013 09:56 AM

I like QuiltnNan's idea. It will match his room now and then later when his personality develops, you can make one with his likes and dislikes, a drag-along quilt. Besides, any baby can always use more than one quilt.

newbee3 09-01-2013 10:19 AM

I am sure it will work just fine it was made with love

KerryK 09-01-2013 10:19 AM

Since it has already been mailed, I'd not worry about it at all. It is adorable for a little boy, and since it will match his room, mom can use it more as a crib quilt to match the decor. Since you are concerned about it, I would go ahead and make him another one in addition to this one, one that she can lay on the floor for him to play on, one that would eventually (maybe) be his drag-along quilt. The quilt is beautiful, and your great-grandson is adorable!

serenitybygrace 09-01-2013 10:25 AM

Very sweet quilt. I would think it could be for a boy or a girl. Precious baby. I pray Mom and Baby will be healthy and home from the hospital as soon as possible. Prayers for Dad, also.

GagaSmith 09-01-2013 02:16 PM

Congratulations on the birth of that beautiful baby boy!!
I think the quilt is fine for a boy or girl. I'm sure he will love it.
Just a note--my daughter is a type one diabetic and she had a baby girl at 30 weeks and a baby boy at 28 weeks (She went into labor-not induced). They are now teenagers and in perfect health. My grandson is 14 and taller than his dad. He is also very, very bright and has won scholarships to sports camps and academic awards.
I'm sure Michael will be happy and healthy. God bless him and his momma.

Lovequilting22 09-01-2013 02:46 PM

Congratulations on the birth of your 10th great-grandchild! I have two grandkids that run me ragged....and they are 7 and 3 so it's too early for great grandkids for me, but what a blessed event for you and your family! Praying for Katie's recovery and peace while she waits. Also for baby Michael that he would gain weight and strength and be home in God's timing.

As for the quilt? I agree with the ladies who said to follow your heart. :).

twinkie 09-01-2013 05:09 PM

You ladies are so kind. Thanks for the prayers and comments.

mom-6 09-01-2013 05:37 PM

Since you've already sent that beautiful quilt I'm sure it will be greatly appreciated.

Oh, by the way, my second son was "supposed to be a girl" all the way to the delivery room. Lots of pink got given away!

I'm also sure this is not the last quilt you will make for this sweet baby! The idea of doing a playtime quilt when he's a bit older sounds good to me.

Amythyst02 09-02-2013 03:22 AM

I love your rag quilt, and honestly I think it would work for both boy or girl. If Mom and Dad leave the room the same colors, and I imagine they will it will fit it just perfectly. They will have a lot of other things to take care of besides the color of the walls. Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Amen!!!

WOW! i am stunned.....The color of the quilt is a moot point. Wrap that baby in the love of the quilt. Why is the color "important"??

One, I hope that you had permission to post the photo of your precious great grandbaby. (Very intimate photo as in his current situation). I assume his health is the utmost priority vs the "color" of a quilt. He is precious and I pray for his continued progress.

The quilts is beautiful, soothing and comforting, made with love.

While I think your quilt is absolutely precious, and is perfectly fine for a boy, i would probably want to make another one especially for HIM . :o Having said that, I'll bet if you wrap that little sweetie up in the quilt already made, he will feel the love you stitched into it, and be perfectly content to claim it. Prayers going up for Michael Alexander.

linynp 09-02-2013 04:35 AM

Congratulations on the new little and may both mom and baby have speedy recoveries! I would recommend a different style from rag since it can produce fluff from the fray edges. Most premies have some respiratory compromise so anything to aide in decreasing issues is a plus IMHO. Again congrats!

orangeroom 09-02-2013 04:41 AM

Congratulations on your newest addition to your family! Our unit has only had an issue like that once in the 5 years that I've been there..."Oh he's peeing....he? Weren't we supposed to have a girl???" Ha ha ha! Science is not full proof! I often joke with laboring women and their families about that. "What are we going to name this baby if it's not a ____?" At least I get them thinking.

On a different note, I'd give this one to Katie and make her newborn a new one. She'll have a smile on her face every time she sees or uses it.

nabobw 09-02-2013 04:53 AM

I agree.

I think it would be a great quilt for either a boy or girl

georgiamarbles 09-02-2013 05:08 AM

LOVE THE QUILT! PRAYERS AND ((((HUGS)) TO YOU ALL ! Give him the quilt! looks great!

twinkie 09-02-2013 05:14 AM

Michael and Katie's health and well being are of the utmost concern. My only question was, Does this quilt look too girlie? And, of course I had permission to post the picture. Daddy Alex posted it on facebook for the world to see and pray for this little guy. He is precious to all of our family and is doing quite well under the circumstances. Thanks for the kind comments.
