In the newest Nancy Halvorsen pattern book there is a pattern for a small tree like you are describing (I think). The book is called Sew Necessary. Lots of other cute things as well.

Wow! I saw that tree and it brought back memories of my Grandmother. She made me one of those trees when I first got married and I still have it! That was 40 years ago. I drag it out every year and it still looks beautiful. I am glade that others out there enjoy that tree as much as I do!

The tree is very simply to make. I can not find the pattern but here goes. Make a tree pattern the size of the tree you want plus 1/2 inch. Start by drawing a triangle for the pattern. Then trace on to your fabric. You will need to cut 4 trees. With right sides together sew a front and a back together two times. Clip and turn right side out. Put the two trees on top of each other and sew a straight line from the top of the tree (where the star would be) to the base of the tree. Stuff each section and the sew the bottom close. Make sure the tree will set flat on the table before sewing close. You can now add any special decorations you would like. Merry Christmas

Oh dear!! I had forgotten about making several of those for Christmas gifts back in the 70's. Then, in the 80's a friend's mother died leaving her with a little 'start' of a Flying Geese top. I made her a tree out of the piece. I'll have to look for the pattern when I get home. You have given me a great idea. Hope you enjoy the pattern!
