I just bought one at walmart (fiskars) and it doesn't smell.

I went to Joanns and before I even got to the aisle they were in I could smell them!

I bought a small one (olfa) a year ago and it still smells!

I'd return it and get one at walmart. Mine is yellow on one side and green on the other.

I just looked at one at Walmart and the smell was horrible!! Even my daughter noticed it. Guess I'm looking elsewhere for a new mat and will do the smell test for sure.

Remember, these smells are actually the chemicals vaporizing from the cutting mat. Baking soda, Fabreeze, etc. will only mask the odor. These products will not stop the vapor from escaping from the mat's surface. You will still breathe it in.
My advice is to return it to the store and also contact the manufacturer and explain that they need to "go green" and eliminate these odor causing chemicals in their products.

This may sound silly but it works for some things-try rubbing it with milk. My husband and I are both very sensitive to chemicals so we've tried everything. I saw on Martha Stewart one time that milk takes off the smell of onions so now if all else fails-got milk?

Maybe rub a dryer sheet on it. They usually help mask/neutralize odors.

I have that problem to, I just bought a new cutting board and the smell is making me sick. I have a problem with things make from petroleum. I have breathing problems, so I am looking to found out how to get the smell out.

If the smell is coming from the mat - how are any of these things put on the outside of it going to stop it?

It seems to me that these things just have to do it in their own time.

(It seems to me to be in the same category as trying to make flatulence odorless by putting hand lotion on one's hands)

It does seem odd that the manufacturers haven't figured out a way to make them odorless.

I don't remember them being so potent many years ago. Were they?
