Since I've updated my design a bit and my internet is running to slow to go find the original post I'm just going to start a new post.

Here's the design layout I came up for this quilt (as well as a key for each block and how many of each is needed---I think I counted it right). I'll add the colorless version later when I have more time...some of you were interested in making the design in your own color schemes.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...s/QuiltKey.jpg

What do you think?

Not quite sure how big this quilt's gonna be yet. Ideally, about 81x99 (9" blocks)...depends on what size the batting is (someone on here was kind enough to send me fabric and batting :)). Then there's still figuring out how to make these blocks in a way where I'm not left totally confused.

barnbum 02-02-2008 04:45 AM

I love that border--and how the design goes right into it.

Yvonne 02-02-2008 07:59 AM

I think you are well on your way to becoming a quilt designer. Lovely and easy to follow. Two key ingredients to a great design!

Flying_V_Goddess 02-02-2008 08:35 PM

Yvonne: You really think so? Maybe I should send in this design to a magazine or something.

There's still just one problem...still need instructions on how to make a double pinwheel and a square in a sqaure as well as figuring out how big the triangles have to be to make the desired size block. I found out the batting I'm getting is about 80x90 so---if my math is right---the biggest I can go for with this design layout is 72x88...so my blocks would have to be 8".

DonnaRae 02-02-2008 09:06 PM

That pattern is great. You for sure are a designer! Might want to check around about how to get your designs out so you can make money on it. In the meen time I am copying this one. 8) Great work!

Flying_V_Goddess 02-02-2008 09:55 PM

Still need help on how to actually go about making this. My Internet's really slow so its difficult trying to search for a good website that would have instructions on how to make these blocks...and I don't think I'd have much luck finding one on how to specifically make them 8".

redrummy 02-02-2008 10:22 PM

 I cannot tell you how to do it, as I am inexperienced at anything but simple designs. I just wanted to tell you that I think it is a beautiful design.  I can hardly wait till you can do it and show us. I want to wish you luck, and tell you you have real design talent there.

Try http://www.quilterscache.com and look under quilt blocks galore. The square in a square block and the pinwheel 12 inch block seem to be your two main blocks. You would have to cut your pieces smaller to get 8 inches, but I bet if you played around with it a bit, you could figure it out. I think your quilt is going to be great!

Celeste 02-03-2008 01:51 AM

Here's a few sites I found:

http://www.equilters.com/library/PFP/square-in-square.html

and the one Lucky Patsy's "Mom" told us about:

http://www.quilterscache.com/S/SquareinSquareBlock.html

http://www.quilterscache.com/P/PinwheelBlock.html

I'm so glad someone was able to send you fabric and batting!

ShellyQ 02-03-2008 03:02 PM

I can run you up some cutting directions for both blocks, just let me know what size you want and I will post on the thread here.

I think I'll need the extra help. I spent like three hours the other night trying to figure out how big to cut my pieces, drawing on my little dry erase board and using my calculator. I only got as far as figuring out for my double pinwheel blocks I could get two half squares out of a 5" square. And I'm not entirely sure if I got that right. lol.

I'm gonna need 8" blocks. Is it possible for you to give me directions that doesn't involve strip cutting? It will be a total nightmare for me to try and cut a paralell strip of fabric. I can't afford to screw up the cutting process so I need some sort of cutting process that doesn't totally make me feel like I'm doing surgery on someone.

Hi there, i'm new to the forum, but just wanted to say your pattern is absolutely beautiful! I don't know if this will help, but i usually use graph paper to make my patterns, and it takes the guessing and calculating out of the picture. But honestly, your pattern looks really really hard, good luck with it!

Ok, instead of rotary cutting instructions, I've done you some templates so you won't need to do strip cutting. you will need to join the patt for the large square. Then you could use the paper patts to make some cardboard templates. I just glue the paper to some cardboard and cut out when dry. All the best with your new project, looks like it's coming along great.
PS: The templates include a marked quarter inch seam allowance, don't forget to click print as image under advanced properties in adobe Reader so that the seam allowances will print out, also make sure scaling is set at nil
Cheers

You have permission to steal.

Awesome, but there's one problem: my printer isn't working. :(

Moonpi 02-05-2008 08:22 PM

try your local library - mine charges ten centa a page for nice laser prints.

Flying_V_Goddess 02-05-2008 08:56 PM

I'm positive my library does prints, but I'm not sure how I could do it since its on an Adobe file...obviously I couldn't go save the file onto their computer and then print it off.

Flying_V_Goddess 02-05-2008 09:00 PM

Oh, I did say I was going to post the colorless version for those who want to steal and come up with their own color scheme. Here it is.

This looks like it is coming along quite nicely!!

sandpat 02-06-2008 03:44 PM

Thanks so much for the permission to steal, however...that does take some of the fun out of it

This one is going on my list of definites to do...thank you

Celeste 02-06-2008 05:15 PM

It still wouldn't hurt to try to print at the library. When I hit "download" it only does it temporarily for me. Perhaps your library will too. If you're worried about it, ask the librarian about it. That's what they're there for!

Oh, and BJ, you're an angel!

bj 02-06-2008 06:09 PM

Thank you Celeste, but a good project like V's should not go undone for want of fabric. I'm anxious to see the progress on the quilt. I think everyone has been very helpful, and does the heart good to see the amount of helping and caring that happen on this board. We ROCK!

barnbum 02-06-2008 06:52 PM

Wow!! That colorless one will make a fabulous coloring sheet for my 5th graders. I call it the Flying V contest. :D Maybe for the Valentine's party.

I can't wait to see even a few squares done.
Flying V--what colors did you decide on?

Woo Hoo!!

Black, white, and hot pink.

Tiffany 02-07-2008 11:58 AM

I love the colorless version. I tend to be one who will sit down with colored pencils and work out different ideas so this is really wonderful for me. Thank you!!!!!

Moonpi 02-07-2008 01:50 PM

I e-mail files to myself, check my e-mail from library, anf print from that. For job hunting, a nice laser copy beats my old inkjet any day. Libraries would already have Adobe Reader installed - it is everywhere.

OnTheGo 02-18-2008 02:26 PM

Like someone else said..........buy a pad of graph paper. I use graph paper for everything..........even designed our house using it.

What colors are you using?

Or if you have a computer and a printer, you can print your own graph paper. The great thing about this is that you can print off any size needed. :D

Tiffany I just love doing that myself!! I picked up a new set of colour leads just last week. I also love using the interior decorator design markers that have three different sized tips. You can get them at most art stores.!

Tiffany 02-20-2008 06:43 AM

I have not heard of the design markers before. They sound yummy! (To play with, not to eat. ) I'm going to have to put that on my list of things to get. I like the idea of different sized tips.

I really love your design....I believe the colors are too strong for me...but again, I am an old lady......
Your design is stunning.....Thanks for sharing....and don't forget to keep posting.

Lucky Patsy's 02-20-2008 08:59 AM

Now, Ania. I am not buying the "old lady" line! A different color pallete resonates with you and your artistic sense! I think quilting keeps us young as we exercise both the analytical and creative parts of our minds.

And V, do keep us posted!

Yeah, I'm not buying into the "old lady" line either. Age doesn't define how bold your color sense is.

I'm not sure when I'll get started on this. I pretty much got everything I need (except cardboard to paste the templates Celeste printed out for me). I've just been feeling terrible lately and it sucks trying to quilt when you're down in the dumps. Been there, done that, it sucked.

Tiffany 02-21-2008 11:58 AM

There is a myth that the old and the young see color differently. When I was working with interior decorating one of the things I learned was that as we get older the whites of our eyes gain some yellowing, which is worse the more time spent out in the sun. The main color that is affected by this are peach-type colors. Younger people can more easily see light peach colors and it is one color that older people will rarely decorate with. I'm probably not explaining this as well as an eye dr. could but that's the basics. I've always found that fascinating and wonder just how differently I see color than I did twenty or thirty years ago.

sandpat 02-21-2008 04:13 PM

Thats interesting Tiff. My hubby is 17 yrs. older than me..who knew??? I just accuse him of being color blind when he searches all over for his "blue shirt"...finally finds the grey one and shouts for joy!

Need a "just shaking my head" smiley!

Quilting Aggi 02-22-2008 04:30 AM

Tiffany I find them great especially where you can control how much colour in different areas.. little spots, use the little tip :) Yes they have some very yummy colours! If I remember the weekend I'll take some of photos of them and post them here so you can see what you are to look for

Cheers

Flying V--I did copy your pattern--told my students about your creativeness--and put it out for them to color during the Valentine's Day party. Most didn't stick to a pattern at all-being 10. But, Ashley did. I asked her permission to bring it home, take a picture and post it. She was quite pleased about the whole idea. So--here it is.

vicki reno 02-22-2008 05:57 AM

She is going to be quite a quilter if she transfers her color "sense" to fabric :!:
