Hi everyone,
I just wanted to share what I did today with my youngest granddaughter who is 4 years old. Her brother was busy watching IronMan with his papaw. My ambition this summer was to start my granddaughters learning to quilt. Maria did a great job listening as I was explaining the pressure foot, foot pedal & most important, keeping her fingers away from the metal foot. I started her out on just sewing paper with no thread, then I drew lines for her to follow. She was on her way & Granny had tears streaming down her face as Maria was saying how fun it was to sew like me. I got out a piece of felt & cut it in squares & she started sewing them together with my guidance. Maria sewed for 2 hours. She wants to finish the other squares tomorrow & make me a pin cushion. IF it goes as she plans, I will post a pic of it! I originally planned to start them on my machine, but I got this Singer Pixie on a very good clearance. I am so proud of her accomplishments today. Maria & purple Singer practicing on paper on her own/granny right behind her watching |
Never too young to quilt. Make sure you get some pictures for her to have later.

she is 4 ... she has a twin brother Vinnie

That's great!

I don't know what happened to my story :(
Maria started sewing today on the new machine. She is 4 years old. I started her on paper... then with sewing lines that I drew. She was doing so well, I cut felt in squares & she sewed them together with me right behind her, guiding her & watching. She already had instuctions from me about watching her fingers, the presser foot lever & the foot pedal. I had tears streaming down my face. I was so thrilled. She is making me a pin cushion, she says. So IF it all goes well tomorrow I will post a pic of it. Machine is a Singer Pixie & I got it on a great clearance. I had planned on all the grands learning this summer to quilt. The youngest started first. |
that is so great, thanks for sharing!

How cute she is quilting! My grandmother wanted to teach me how to knit and crochet, but her arthritis kept her from doing it. She encouraged me to do needlework and I have been doing it since I was young. Now I am quilting too.

IF she does get hooked, we will have to rob her piggy bank... LOL. Nah I wouldn't do that. I have had a few wonderful & sharing quilters here send me 'pink' material & for that I am greatly thankful. I only hope that at least one of my son's daughters gets hooked on it as well. |

Maria had a great teacher to show her the steps & all first.
You can tell how happy she is in that pic and her machine is adorable! Just the other day i brought my GD a singer toy that really sew from the goodwill for $2.00. I gave her square scraps & we're supposed to try it today, she just turned 7 and my other Gd is 9 and i found a Singer in a case for $20 from another thrift store, clean it up ..looks like an 70-80 model. They both made straight a's so i promised each 1 thing that they wanted. That is what they wanted! So proudgranny5, i know you'r happy & proud that 1 of your GD is taking up this craft & following your footstep. |
Too cute.

Do you know where i can find this machine, my gd is 7 and loves to sew with mine, so i thought it would make a nice christmas gift for her. Thank you

Okay, the project is finished & I think Maria is pretty proud of herself. She even used my "Big" machine as she calls it. Maria used a permanent marker to write her name, draw a couple pictures & wrote the year on it. She couldn't get the 2 for 2010 to suit her, so I had to guide her hand. She is being pretty particular on this project. The one pic you can't see is me & her in the bottom square, her hand was covering it. This is 'my' new pin cushion from her. She even stuffed it herself. It was so much fun watching her.
Don't know what she is planning to do next, but I am sure her little mind is working. I have a couple days off from the grands, so I will be sewing some & hopefully quilting too. Thanks for letting me share this with you. Finished using my machine Completed & pretty proud of herself |

Your GD is so cute with her little machine and project! I teach Kids sewing classes at my local JoAnn's and the kids are always so excited when they finish their project. One class that I taught in the past was a tote bag from Leisure Arts "Cool Stuff, Teach Me to Quilt" book. It was a quilt as you go project made from fat quarters, and was a very popular class.
Here's a couple girls with their totes :D |
it would be great if you take pictures every step of the way. Then make a quilt by transferring the pictures to each block. Then give it to her years later to keep the loving members alive. She is a little doll. Very bless to have someone to show her how to quilt.

Congratulations on "infecting" the next generation. A couple of years ago, I went to Maryland to spend time with one of my granddaughters--7 years old at the time. In order to have something to do, I took sewing machines and fabrics and she made a quilt. Last year we made another, and this year she wondered if we'll make another one. It's exciting to see her sewing and enjoying it. I started sewing when I was 5 years old since I was finally able to reach the treadle and the top of the machine at the same time. My mother was very patient, and generous in letting my sisters and me use the machine. When Daddy said, "They'll sew their fingers!" her response was, "They won't do it but once!" And we didn't!
|
What a cutie. And a darling machine. She knows how to hold her hands already. Welcome new little quilter.
