From Connecting Threads? How do they compare to Hoffman?

hmay60 04-20-2011 08:58 AM

They are not Hoffman, but not bad. I was thinking of ordering some of the new colors, today.

BellaBoo 04-20-2011 09:07 AM

I like them. I ordered the complete sampler to see all the colors. I have lots of Hoffman, Island, and Timeless Treasures batiks too. The differences between all of them aren't enough to bother me. I will order the CT batiks again.

granma1 04-20-2011 09:17 AM

Boy , You should work for them. That was a glowing testamonial . i believe I will give them a try. Thanks

PurplePassion 04-20-2011 09:17 AM

I love them. such beautiful colors.

fabric_fancy 04-20-2011 09:42 AM

i'm the odd one out.

i believe the difference to be dramatic, Connecting Threads is so thin i would only use it for backing on a wall hanging.

you can get Hoffman batiks at Thousands of Bolts for the same price as Connecting Threads.

kittenquilts 04-20-2011 10:19 AM

I just looked today and they have some batiks on clearance right now - under $5.

hmay60 04-20-2011 10:30 AM

Yes, I agree they are thiner. I had ordered the samples too. Some of the colors I liked and some not too good. I used them on a small wall hanging and they looked pretty.

Just curious, for you to say the CT batiks are so thin what are you comparing it to? I have the very expensive Hoffman batiks to compare side by side. I'll buy the Hoffman if I find it on a great sale, no other reason.

thequilterslink 04-20-2011 11:55 AM

I ordered the charm packs of all the colors, 79 i think, i love them, they are a bit thinner, but great color choices.

Piecework Fabrics is having a sale on all their fabric including Batiks for $5.95 right now. They have a large selection.

I agree 100%!

I agree. They're much thinner. I'll use what I've bought from CT but in the future will stick to Hoffman and the like.

The ones I ordered were beautiful. But, I've not sewn them yet.

Happy Tails 04-21-2011 02:44 AM

The Quilt in a Day Jewel Quilt that I posted previously was made with batiks from CT. I was thrilled with it

Scakes 04-21-2011 04:36 AM

I've ordered some of them and been happy with them.

I've bought lots of batiks from my LQS and I see VERY minimal difference in theirs and CT's. In fact I think CT batiks have a much nicer "hand" than those from LQS. They are smoother and sew up beautifully. LQS batiks are rough and definitely harder to sew through. As you can tell I love the CT ones. Wish I could buy several yards of every one of them. Mmmmm..........that would be fun! :D

CharlottsQuilts 04-21-2011 04:42 AM

I was thinking of buying the Moda (I think they are called Moda Bali Pops, they come in strips of 2.5 inches. I was thinking of making a bars type quilt, Anyone have any ideas about that?

sandpat 04-21-2011 05:51 AM

I just ordered a "stack" to try them and I was suitably impressed! I am not a huge fan of their regular fabric *shhhhhh....don't tell anyone*, but I really do like these. They are a little bit thin, but perfectly fine for applique, which is what I am using them for. Order a stack or strip set...its not much and you can see for yourself.

Doreen 04-21-2011 06:16 AM

I just received some and they are not bad. I have a lot of batiks to compare. The colors are beautiful!

RV Quilter 04-21-2011 06:54 AM

The Moda Bali Pop strips are great to work with. They are a nice weight and love the colors that blend together so well.

grammysharon 04-21-2011 07:05 AM

I purchased a couple different ones from connecting threads. Put them side by side and after washing both could not tell much differance in the "hand". I have sewed with them and they were great. Connecting Threads have some beautiful new ones in their catalog

Z&S fabrics is having a short-time sale on Hoffman batiks and the end up being $3.99 per yard. I have ordered from Z&S many times and I like their quick service and quality fabrics. Their current sale extends way beyond the batiks--I think all fabrics are 25% off right now. But please check their website to verify this. Also, all sale prices are taken off AFTER you check out--this can be a little confusing if you aren't used to it. Here is a link to their home page (I hope I did this right):

Thank you for your question, since I was also curious about them. After reading all the answers, I have made up my mind and think I will also pass on the Connecting Threads batiks. They are beautiful, but most of my quilts are for use and not hanging.

CharlottsQuilts 04-21-2011 08:50 AM

Thanks for all the replys, and I didn't know about Z+S fabrics, I'll give them a try.

quilt3311 04-21-2011 02:05 PM

I've used Connecting Threads batiks and love them. Have been drooling on the new ones. May just have to order some.
