Well, now that I see where its going....I wish I would have done a better job on my fabric choices....but can't turn back now.... lets just say...mine will be bright!! LOL I'm way behind tho.... been a rough day for me and didn't get as much done as I hoped to on it....but I'm still plugging along!

mumtoliam 01-01-2009 03:08 PM

I cant wait to see it either Connie-yep I eventually went back to bed for a couple of hours - glad I did cause my son is up and running around causing all sorts of bedlam. I have finished step 3 and as I said I will finish over the weekend- and post a picture when done... I think the finished layout looks pretty too. I think I will layout exactly as Merry Mayhem LOL, but will think about it more when I am at that stage...

mumtoliam 01-01-2009 03:09 PM

Brazen - Dont forget to grab the instructions off so you can make one too!!!

I've been saying the same thing. I could have reversed where my violets went and where the green went. Oh, well. I'll finish it up and hope for the best.
Here's what my fans will look like. I've a LONG ways to go!

Country Quilter 01-01-2009 03:32 PM

Well, thats alot prettier than mine will be..... love your fabrics!!!

mary quite contrary 01-01-2009 03:59 PM

Even though I'm not participating I'm watching your progress. This has been fun to watch. I can't wait to see more pictures.

Yvonne yours is beautiful.

Yvonne - your's will look great! Don't worry - wait until you start piecing it together.

Your sister's is also looking good.

I thought I would post a photo of how mine is coming along. I am going to go out later and find another bias strip or more fabric - the bias I bought is poly cotton mix.

Yvonne 01-01-2009 05:30 PM

Vanessa, That is going to be so rich looking. Wonderful fabric choices!

Yep! I think they'll all look lovely when they're done. I always have to second guess myself.

MissTami 01-01-2009 06:15 PM

I kept up with all the clues but had no money for the fabric. I will be getting some soon. But all of your quilts are beautiful colors and I can not wait til I see the finished tops.

Happy New Year

MissTami

My son has just gone to bed and this is my sewing time. WooHOO! I went out and bought a metre of fabric and tonight I think my job will be to make bias binding - Blurgh! That is not my favourite part!!! I want nice edges so I am doing it the long way. Any quick tips?

Anyway, I want to feel inspired to finish this, so I laid out what I have done so far - and this is it!!!! It is on its side but I like it!!!! I cant wait to get the bias on - which brings me to another question? I am thinking about sewing on the Fabric A, and then hand sewing on the bias binding strips. I dont trust my stitching on curves, and it will show up - what do you think?

Country Quilter 01-02-2009 03:20 AM

I think its nice!!! I don't think bias binding will be as hard to sew on by machine as you think it might..... but then I have yet to try it so who am I to say! LOL

mumtoliam 01-02-2009 03:41 AM

Patsy - how are you going with yours? What part are you up to?

Connie - any photos of the work in progress?

Country Quilter 01-02-2009 04:13 AM

I am just getting around to squaring up the HST's ... big and small... and am cutting the shaped pieces out as I put it up on the wall.... not sure which color I want to make my main color yet....I may go with the opposite that they say... no pics yet....not far enuf.

beachlady 01-02-2009 04:19 AM

Mum - you are the one that got up at 3am I think and did you stay up all night to finish this too? I think it looks great. You are a fast worker.

mumtoliam 01-02-2009 04:22 AM

Thankyou but it isnt finished - I stayed with you for Part 2, 3, and 4 but I was dead tired after that - and I discovered my bias was poly cotton mix, I wanna use 100% cotton - so I went back to bed LOL I think it will take me the weekend to get it all together.

Chele 01-02-2009 04:59 AM

Beautiful work on the mystery, girls!

Well, here is mine on the wall..... I think I am going to use the fusible bias tape on this....black .... cuz I have enuf of that and don't have enuf rick rack of any one color..... I am in the process now of trimming the 2 1/2 inch HST's... long ways to go.....

scrap_lover09 01-02-2009 08:42 AM

What a lot of pretty combinations! Me and my mom worked on this too yesterday. I will get some pics posted when i can get some taken. We had fun. It was the first time we had done one.

Yvonne 01-02-2009 09:35 AM

Vanessa, I love the way you have your fans layed out.
Patsy, your fabric is wonderful and your layout is great. Those little 1/2 squares are taking forever to square up! Heck, ironing is a major chore!
Scrap_lover09, I can hardly wait to see what your mom and you have come up with.

I didn't get up at 3a.m. but I was exhausted last night and went to bed early. Look what you all did while I was sleeping! Wow! I am really motivated to get busy today and make some progress. I am way far behind all of you.

Happy Day after the New Year! Happy Stitching!

mumtoliam 01-02-2009 05:20 PM

Patsy that is beautiful!!! I cant wait to see it with its border on! I also squared up my HST last night too - I had some AMAZON ones that needed trimming and then I had 6 that werent quite right. I had to unpick. Not too bad out of 96.

I am still doing the bias binding... and then I cant wait to put it together!!!!

mumtoliam 01-02-2009 05:23 PM

Scrap -cant wait to see yours and your mum's quilt in progress too... How did you do the bias - did you use ricrac or machine stitch it on?

I've been working on the mystery quilt, too, with a late start and many interruptions. After several layouts, my husband picked dark symmetry - and without seeing your lovely examples! I bought twill tape, but the store didn't have enough of any one colour, so I mixed them, hoping it would be hidden in the quilt. So now I think I'll make some bias binding  which I hate pressing. When the instruction said "think ocean or oriental", I thought desert.

Without the curves fastened down yet, I tried variations to see whether I liked the dark or light framed better. It's interesting to see how the same pattern looks so different simply by turning the curves.

The final design chosen.

What it looks like with dark centers.

I kind of liked this one; it reminded me of the desert ripples.

mary quite contrary 01-02-2009 07:04 PM

I like that last one best of the 3 layouts.

SaraSewing 01-02-2009 07:07 PM

Wow, that last photo, BZang is beautiful. You sure have a good eye for color and layout. I love all the projects that you guys are posting. I worked all holidays, but followed it hour by hour last year. Now I can hardly wait to do it!!!

sewsewquilter 01-02-2009 07:10 PM

B.zang I like the one you captioned "I kind of liked this one; it reminded me of the desert ripples." To me they look like braided rope or chain.

All the layouts are pretty. It's neat to see how different they look by changing the curve :D

Janstar 01-02-2009 07:13 PM

What a fun pattern for you guys! They all look great and I'm so surprised to see how many layouts you can get with it. Good job!!!!!!!!

Yvonne 01-02-2009 07:52 PM

Barbara,
Thanks for sharing the change in colors. WOW! What a difference!!! The darker one looks very closed in while the lighter one is open and 'free', at least in my eyes. I am considering that bottom layout also for my violets. Right now I'm not sure what will happen. I still have six more to put the arcs on and I only have rickrack on three. Long ways yet to go!

Sara, I knew we were missing someone this year. This years quilt isn't going to be as large as last years, thank goodness. I also haven't been as crazy this year. I think I learned after last year to just go with the flow and do what I could and finish when I was done! Come on Sara, go get the directions quickly and make us another one.

Country Quilter 01-03-2009 01:17 AM

I like the last one too....altho the second one is very appealing as well! Your color combo is great! Isn't it fun to play and see which way you like it best!? :)

mumtoliam 01-03-2009 01:28 AM

I love the change from dark to light but definitely the last one "desert ripples" is the best!!!

I also made bias binding - This will take me a few days to finish as I am hand sewing it on! :(

Well, I am about to start Part 6 (putting the small HST borders on) but thought I would show you what mine looks like so far with the one border on... this is time consuming but I am liking it more now that I'm getting toward the end of it! LOL

Yvonne 01-03-2009 08:33 AM

Oh, that is going to be lovely! It already is pretty nice!!! Thanks for sharing.

I agree with you. I am liking mine too. Amazing! I'm hoping to finish my fans today but time will tell. Who knows what interference I'll get with the housework and laundry stuff!

Have a wonderful July 3.

Very pretty Country Quilter!

b.zang 01-03-2009 11:48 AM

Those dark borders around your curves really add to the pattern! Very impressive - I like it :)

Is this supposed to be done in a day? It seems to be taking a LOT more time than one hour per step!!!

AkAngel 01-03-2009 11:51 AM

Got the HTS's sewn together and pinned on the wall next to the quilt and thought I might as well snap a pic of it while it was up there! Now, to get them attached, add the last border, pin baste, quilt, bind........ LOL I'm thinking by Monday I might be done! :)

AkAngel 01-03-2009 12:14 PM

It is looking very nice, I agree that the dark trim around the fans really adds
a nice touch.

Wow...there's alot of different and beautiful quilts there! Thanks for posting that link..... I've been trying to find it and couldn't....also looking for the link that shows the prize winners (door prizes) but can't find that either....

I'm stitching on the HST borders now....had to fudge a bit on the top and bottom ones but the sides fit nicely....
