I had so much fun making the mystery quilt on Jan. 1, this year that I'm opting to do it again. I've convinced my sister to play with me. How many more people can I convince? Here's the web site.

http://planetpatchwork.com/mystery128/default.htm

I'll be busy cutting out my fabric so I'll be ready to sew come Jan. 1, 2009. Come play with me! You'll love it! Trust me!

Renee 12-12-2008 05:54 PM

Very interesting. I may consider doing this. Thanks for sharing.

We're usually pretty busy on New Year's Day. Dinner at my aunt's and then family games. I can't wait to see yours though!

Thank you for the info.....I just signed up will go shopping this morning.

I'm glad to see that some of you are going to build a quilt on Jan 1, also. It's so much fun to see how the quilts all turn out so different even though we're using the same pattern.
I've ordered some fabric since I didn't have anything that would do in my stash! Hey! It was a reason to buy more fabric! I should turn my back on the opportunity to shop? I don't think so. The pattern calls for almost 3 yards for background fabric and I never buy 3 yards. I think I shall have to change my buying habits now!!!
I'll be making my quilt using the RJR, Violetta fabrics.

ljsunflower 12-13-2008 05:32 PM

I'm gonna try this one. I've done a couple of mystery quilts before. They were supposed to be done in one day? Not mine. I think I finished it in 3 weeks. LOL I'm just really sllloooowwww.
Thanks so much for giving us the link.

For those of you who have participated in this before, could you post a picture of the finished mystery quilt?

This is the one I did Jan. 1, 2008. It turned out huge. This new one appears to be much smaller. Thank goodness. :D I'll go poke around and see if I can find the other quilts.

Ah! Here you go. This is the photo site for Planet Patchwork's mystery quilts.

Well, this looks like fun. I am sooo slow though, but I might sign up....the worst that could happen is either I get company and cant do it or dont finish it....the world wont end either way right? LOL

Sweet!! Yours from last year is gorgeous!!

I signed up for their newsletter and updates.

Are you going to do "water" or "oriental"? I love the idea of a watery quilt!

Yvonne 12-14-2008 08:07 PM

I just thought I'd mention that last year the pattern directions were left up for about a month or so after Jan. 1.

My sister and I were cracking up during the last NYmystery project. Came time to download the second set of directions I was already way behind! We were calling each other and that just added to the craziness! My husband was even laughing at me. Just running around making myself nutz! I think it took me at least another couple of weeks before I finished the top and then there was the whole quilting issue. I did finally get it done! Whew!

I'll have a pot of beans on the stove this year so I won't have to worry about dinner! Isn't there some sort of superstition about having beans for good luck in the new year? Anyway, I learned a lot about my method of quilt making last January and I'm sure I'll learn a lot more this time! (and it's not always good!) But it is fun!!!!!!!

Thank you so much! I've opted to use violets this time! so, neither of the above. I do have to be difficult, huh?

Connie1948 12-15-2008 03:16 AM

I will be doing Oriental. The Posole will be in the crock pot keeping hot for anyone who thinks they are hungry around here that day. I will probably never be able to keep up either. I will just do what I can and print the instructions so I can work at my own pace. I am too picky to speed cut and sew.

You are supposed to eat black eyed peas on January 1st and it will bring you good luck all year long. I was never clear as to why it is supposed to bring good luck. No one could ever explain that part. It's funny you should mention this tradition. I used to do it every year and I haven't in about ten years now. (Wow, where did the time go!?!) I picked up some black eyed peas a couple weeks ago just to make a pot for new year's day this year. Hubby hates black eyed peas and won't eat them so if we have a bad year, I'm blaming him.

Do you think a beginner can manage this?

Margie....well I am not exactly a beginner...but not far past lol

Connie1948 12-16-2008 05:44 AM

Around here it is Posole for good luck! I fix it with pork, garlic and red chili

What is "Posole"?

ScubaK 12-16-2008 06:56 AM

I didn't know what Posole was either so I found this:

Looks yummy!

Connie1948 12-16-2008 07:57 AM

It is a soup type dish made with homney a product of corn. I believe it is Mexican or Native American. I learned about it from friends of both of these decents. They both claim it. All I know is it is great on a cold winter day.

I have done the mystery quilts several times with Planet Patchwork. They are easy enough for a beginner. Don't worry. Just enjoy. If you get stuck there is a message board and someone will help you through.

I'm sitting here looking at the cutting directions for this mystery quilt. I've never sewn with bias tape or anything like it. I can't even imagine what this will be used for in a quilt. OK, I haven't sewn much of anything but simple quilts. So, is this quilt gonna be ok for someone with not many skills but a lot of want to? LOL I won't be using bias tape, it would be a dark accent fabric - but 1/2 inch?!? Give me some encouragement here please!

ljsunflower 12-16-2008 09:04 AM

Oh! What the heck is bias strips anyway??

Yvonne, your fabrics are beautiful! I guess I'll pass on this mystery cause I don't do bias strips.

Margie 12-28-2008 10:35 AM

In Pennsylvania.....it is always Pork and sauerkraut for New Year's day to bring good luck...and if for some strange reason someone doesnt eat sauerkraut, it is pork and cabbage in some form. Almost every New Year's eve party has it and New Year's day too :).

pawquilts 12-28-2008 11:25 AM

Yvonne,
Thanks for sharing this. I will try it! I hope I will be able to check in with the site every hour. No company at the house this year. So this may be a completed "mystery" for me!
-Pat :) :) :)

I'm not doing bias strips either. See that rick rack? That's going to be my "bias"! It's an official alternative! Ta-daa

mumtoliam 12-29-2008 02:59 AM

Thanks for posting this - I am from Australia - this sounds really exciting for me. So tomorrow I am gonna get my fabric together - I am thinking Batiks and I will use Ric Rac... It starts 3am Friday for me- so I am going to go to bed early and set the alarm clock - it sounds like real fun!!!! Hope to see you on the chats - I will be Vanessa M - I have set myself up on the chat already.

mumtoliam 12-29-2008 03:08 AM

Just a question - did you get 16yds of ric rac? That seems like a lot!!!

mumtoliam 12-29-2008 03:14 AM

And another question - I wasnt thinking of getting my backing - will that be okay? or will I need it before I start the project?

Here are my fabrics. I guess I should get my bias binding made ahead of time. I hope the instructions are correct and that I purchased enough of the dark gold. 16yds does seem like a lot of bias. I wonder if it is correct?
I am ConnieV in the chat room.

Tiffany 12-29-2008 07:04 AM

What gorgeous fabrics!!! I can't wait to see how the quilt turns out!

mary quite contrary 12-29-2008 07:19 AM

I can't wait to see these. I don't think I will be participating but I will look forward to seeing all of yours.

I see some beautiful fabrics here.

I've actually purchased an extra package of rickrack. I have 20 yards! I won't run out!!! I've got all my fabric pieces cut and only have to mark the diagonals on about 6 more squares. It was pretty fast to cut out the pieces. I'm wondering about the LOF cuts. I thought that would be the borders but why would you have two borders of the same color?? I'm sure it will all become clear January 1. I hope so!

Oh, in regards to the backing. Last year I didn't buy mine until the quilt was finished. It was fine. They usually leave the directions posted for a month or so after Jan 1. So, you can actually find the directions after the fact if you happen to sleep in.

I hope we have as much fun as I had last year. I don't know if I'll make the chat room because I was always behind doing the sewing!

P.S. (I keep hitting the edit button to add more stuff here!
Connie, I love your fabric choices. They are great. It's going to be beautiful!

mumtoliam 12-29-2008 03:20 PM

Connie - love your fabric choices!!! I am just waiting for the washing machine to stop, hang out the washing and then I'm off fabric shopping... cant wait to see what will inspire me this time...

I was thinking batiks but I will keep an open mind until I get there.

Do you go shopping with a fabric in mind or do you let the fabric inspire you? I tend to let the fabric talk to me, so what I usually think I'll get, turns out to be something totally different LOL.

Connie1948 12-29-2008 06:49 PM

I was going to go with batiks put found this interesting print....it called out to me. This is usually what happens to me. I come home with something that I did not have in mind.
Is that little piece of fabric going to make 16 yds of bias tape? I just might go out and buy some gold ric rac.
Connie
