Went to the quilt shop to get backing for a quilt I'm making my Mom. The lady behind me said, is that printed like that or is it pieced. I said, "Oh, it's pieced" and turned it over to show her. Then she said, "Oh, it's so flat I thought it was printed". Hmmm, I thought that the tops were supposed to be pressed and that flat was good? I think she meant it to be nice.

sueisallaboutquilts 02-26-2011 10:26 AM

So do I! :D
When do WE get to see it??? :D

ncsewer 02-26-2011 10:28 AM

I'll try to post it when I'm done. I have a hard time getting the pictures to post on here, but I'll at least try.

She did mean it in a wonderful way ! that means you did a great job on it - to get it so flat  Mine have more lumps and bumps then a box of cubed sugar  LOL

cctx. 02-26-2011 10:31 AM

The lady meant well, it was more of a compliment.

loves_2_quilt 02-26-2011 10:46 AM

My grandmother would have called that a "left handed compliment", one that could have been taked as nice or not.

Raggiemom 02-26-2011 10:49 AM

Take it as a compliment, you'll feel better! :)

momcpo 02-26-2011 10:50 AM

I'd take it as a compliment. If you piece something that someone mistakes for a panel, good work!!

redquilter 02-26-2011 10:53 AM

I think it was definitely meant as a compliment.

sewgray 02-26-2011 11:16 AM

Sonded like a very nice compliment to me.

C.Cal Quilt Girl 02-26-2011 11:19 AM

Take it as a compliment, what you did is not easy to do!! :)

dunster 02-26-2011 11:19 AM

I think it means that her pieced tops are never flat, and she didn't realize they could and should be. Probably it was just a comment. Good job on confounding the poor lady, and on your flat pieced top.

My topper is coming out that way, but I look in the book and so is there's so I think I'm doing right if not, work on the second one better, cause I'm not taking it apart...LOL

Divokittysmom 02-26-2011 11:35 AM

I think it was a compliment! If she couldn't tell it was pieced... you did an awesome job!! Congrats!!

JanetM 02-26-2011 01:23 PM

I think she was complimenting you. Your top was so flat because you didn't have any stretching of the material as you pieced it. And I would guess that you pressed (not ironed) each seam carefully.

Good job!

IBQUILTIN 02-26-2011 08:31 PM

Good for you. Those kind of compliments are few and far between. Great job

justlooking 02-27-2011 04:08 AM

It's a compliment!

EagarBeez 02-27-2011 05:11 AM

I agree with the others, it was meant as a compliment. Some people can't express themselves as others

j 02-27-2011 06:20 AM

Was it starched, how did you get it so flat. Mine never are - J.

Iron it into submission!!!

ncsewer 02-27-2011 07:09 AM

Since I joined the board, I started pressing every time I make a seam. I starch before cutting and before I put the completed squares together. Then when I got all done I spent quite a bit of time pressing it again. I think I'll have it longarmed and it's the first time so I figured flat would help.

I think it was a nice compliment!

auntdeb 02-27-2011 08:05 AM

I think it was a good comment too. However she meant it, it's a good comment on your work!!!

Stitchnripper 02-27-2011 08:12 AM

A compliment for sure. Would love to see it!

Doreen 02-27-2011 08:58 AM

It is nice when a quilt lies flat because sometimes when we piece, we get puckers. I bought the CD from Bonnie Botts,
she is a professional quilter. The Cd's name is "spray starch and Steam. Her method forces the blocks and border to lie flat. It works!

fred singer 02-27-2011 09:00 AM

I think that she was try to give you a compliment

That is a good compliment. I would have said thank you if someone made that comment to me.

Rose Bagwell 02-27-2011 05:33 PM

I do believe you got a nice compliment.

#1piecemaker 02-27-2011 05:47 PM

I think it was a compliment too. You evidently did a super job if she couldn't tell by looking.

Eileen 02-27-2011 07:05 PM

That's a real compliment. I usually have to use my acrilic hammer to get my joints flat. A good pounding on freshly steamed quilt square gets rid of alot of frustration though.

nanquilt 02-27-2011 09:45 PM

Please post it. I am sure it looks wonderful and I know you are very pleased.

Charming 02-27-2011 09:48 PM

It was a very nice compliment actually, she meant it is so good that she could hardly figure if it is handmade or machine made....wow that's nice. You must have had a really exceptional quilt.

cheryl rearick 02-27-2011 09:52 PM

what a nice impression you left her with. :)

Pickles 02-27-2011 10:35 PM

A great compliment I would think, would love to see it :D
