using 5" squares makes a nickel- all choice of fabric and they can be all cut up for the pattern they are fun. some shops will sell the squares for a nickel.

If you go to Amazon and search on Pat Speth, you will see her Nickel quilting books. Two of them are searchable, so you can get a good idea of what her nickel quilts look like. Because they are all made with 5-inch squares, you easily can get a very scrappy look to them.

i'm not trying to be a smart-ass, honest. why can't you just cut up any fabric into pieces smaller than 5"? why would that be different?

Any smaller than 5 and it wouldn't be a nickel anymore. A nickel is 5. (Took me a little while to figure that one out myself) hehehe :D :D

i thought the 5" squares could than be cut up. they can't?

so can you start with 5" squares and then cut? if you can, then they don't have to start at 5". they can start at ....anything, as long as they don't exceed 5".

wrong?

2" squares are postage stamps
there are patterns for layer cakes, jelly rolls , and every pastry out there, and they get cut up. So just go with it and have fun.
