No More Bounce Spray Starch - What is like it?

I just discovered that Bounce Spray starch was discontinued last year...I had stock piled it and am just running out...I loved this stuff!

So what do you use instead that doesn't leave sticky residue or flakes?

grma33 05-02-2014 01:25 PM

Niagra startch cheap a lot of us Canadians buy lots as we can`t get it here.
Bought some stay flo also. Want to dilute it. Have a? When I mix it does the water go funny? or does the startch keep it okay?
THanks Gale

I use the liquid sta-flo at a 50/50 mix in a cheapie refillable spray bottle. I only mix up about a cup at a time as I'm a sporadic sewer. I spray the fabric until it's rather damp and lrt soak into the fabric for a minute or two and then iron. I have no issue with flakes or residue. And it's way cheaper than any of the commercially available spray starches.

this is what i do also... but i'd be interested in knowing if anyone has had theirs go bad.

Tartan 05-02-2014 02:32 PM

I liked it too but found the scent bothered my asthma. Might be the reason it was pulled?

quilts4charity 05-02-2014 02:44 PM

I'm a sta-flo user too, 50-50 and I've never had any go bad.....

auntpiggylpn 05-02-2014 02:47 PM

I stock piled the Bounce also. I've got 15 bottles in the cupboard. Not looking forward to the day I pull that last bottle out . . .

nvb50 05-02-2014 03:18 PM

I'm also a sta-flo user too, 50-50 and I've never had any go bad.

I'm practically hooked on the Niagra in the spray bottle. Original scent. I don't know if it is a memory that I'm remembering or what it is. But I love the smell. Sometimes when things are discontinued they will show up at Big Lots if one is nearby.

Onebyone 05-02-2014 04:12 PM

I also have a supply of Bounce spray and found I like the new Flatter spray better. I love the name too.

TeresaA 05-02-2014 04:12 PM

I like the Niagara too. Strangely, it works fantastically well on quilter's cotton, but it flakes on poly-cotton shirts and even the cotton shorts I ironed today.

But I still love it. $2.50 for 20 oz, NOT on sale and it works fine!

I had never heard of "Flatter" spray so I googled it. Looks like it is all natural which is a plus but my goodness, it is pricey! I found 8 oz for $12.00!!!!

Shelbie 05-02-2014 04:38 PM

Every time I go to the States, I look for starch. I even make my poor daughter drag it home for me. The last time I was down I cleaned them out (42 bottles of Niagara non aerosol starch) which I shared with all of my quilt buddies at Stitch and Share. I also bought a new iron and two enormous jugs of laundry detergent. The border guard commented that I must be washing and ironing shirts for the army but I didn`t enlighten him!

cindyw 05-02-2014 05:28 PM

I don't get the starch flakes/residue but I used to. Remember those scrubby things that people made out of plastic milk jug handles and netting? My former mother in law made one for me and that thing was perfect for getting the starch residue off of fabric.

Ok, I had to search for a picture and instead I found a clip from the Carol Duvall show making one! I forgot about that show! http://www.hgtv.com/video/nylon-scru...deo/index.html

lizzyq 05-02-2014 05:41 PM

I use Faultless Premium starch (gold cap) that is sold at Walmart. The last one I bought was $1.82 for 20 oz. No flaking at all.

sewingsuz 05-02-2014 09:13 PM

I use Stay flo and mix 50 -50 and have not had mine go bad. I use it a lot.

meanmom 05-03-2014 03:13 AM

I have tried all of the starches listed. My favorite is still Mary Ellens Best Press. It is worth the price. I buy a gallon when it is half price at JoAnns or Hancocks.

judi wess 05-03-2014 03:36 AM

I use the liquid concentrate starch diluted 50/50. My fave however is spray sizing, doesn't attract silverfish.

So Jersey Eileen 05-03-2014 04:05 AM

I use Niagara Spray and it works very well and always in stock at Walmart

eparys 05-03-2014 04:14 AM

I too use Niagra Spray Starch in the non aerosol bottle. I keep a empty bottle on hand and cut it 50/50 with water. I do this as it cuts down on flakes and I do not care for the "stiff as a board" feeling that the straight starch gives me.

I know I know ...if you spray the starch and let it sit ans completely soak in - you don't get flakes but patience has never been a virtue of mine - lol!! So the 50/50 works great for me.

citruscountyquilter 05-03-2014 04:22 AM

I use either Niagra in the non-aerosol bottle or Mary Ellen's Best Press. My favorite is Best Press but it is pricy. I always ask for it on my Christmas list.

To successfully starch you need to let the liquid soak into the fabric. Best Press is designed to do this quickly and doesn't leave residue on my iron like spray starch does. You will minimize or eliminate flaking if you let the starch soak in. I usually put my fabric in a plastic bag and spray the starch on the fabric. I then close the bag and kneed it to distribute the starch and then let it sit for a while for the starch to penetrate the fabric. The plastic bag keeps it from drying out much like in days past people put sprinkled clothes in plastic bags for ironing.

To clean residue off my iron I use a magic eraser (like Mr. Clean one). I have a shiny sole plate on my iron. I don't know if it would work with a teflon coated sole plate. A wet eraser on a cold iron works great and much cheaper than the iron cleaners you can buy.

Lucky you!! Our Walmart stopped carrying it. Finally found it at a local Kroger.

lclang 05-03-2014 04:37 AM

I read somewhere that you can use potato vodka...ONLY potato vodka because that's where the starch is from the potatoes. Said it worked very well. Try your local liquor store and put it in an empty hairspray bottle for a nice fine spray.

Dodie 05-03-2014 04:45 AM

I to miss bounce but I use magic sizing and like it almost as well

I do this also. Used to buy Best Press, which I loved, but since I use a LOT, it became too expensive. More money for fabric this way!

I love the spray sizing. However, the spray top breaks very easily and you cannot fix it because it's broken on the inside of the nozzle. I have had a couple of cans do that, which means I had to waste an entire can of sizing. I wrote the company and found out it was happening to other people as well, and several of the complaints were years ago and there has been no effort to fix the problem. It's the Niagara spray sizing.

I don't think that will be enough! I would have to buy a ton of it....but thanks for looking. I will try a couple of these recommendations and see how it goes.

tessagin 05-03-2014 06:36 AM

I have to go with unscented starches. Otherwise I would have to spray outside, but as soon as the iron would hit it, it would just activate the scent again. I just use the cheap unscented and only a total cup at a time. 50-50 water and starch.

Me, too. I also get a gallon with the coupon. It gets stiff enough for me and smell wonderful. And not flakes or residue ever!

themary 05-03-2014 06:55 AM

I use Mary Ellen Best Press for all needs of starch. It does not leave any buildup.

I have tried several spray starches. I also went back to Mary Ellens Best Press... and I like the scent of it.

cathyvv 05-03-2014 09:18 AM

I doubt that the scent was the reason it was pulled. If that were true, about 75% of personal products and laundry products would be pulled from the market. I wish it would happen, because scents trigger my sinus problems.

zkosh 05-03-2014 02:00 PM

Me, too.

PKGranny 05-03-2014 03:45 PM

I love Magic Sizing - get it at our Walmart for about a buck a can & never get any flaking.

0tis 05-03-2014 04:00 PM

I have one bottle of the bounce spray - but the smell really bothered me - I would get headaches from it however, I can use Mary Ellen's and it doesn't bother me at all - I also like the Magic Sizing spray.

oldtisme 05-03-2014 04:28 PM

I too use the liquid Sta-Flo & always check near the washroom at Estate Sales for bottles of it too, I'm usually lucky & find some for about .25

maviskw 05-03-2014 08:26 PM

I have had a small amount of stay-flo mix go bad. I hadn't used it in more than a month, and it was stored in my laundry room on the shelf. There was a little mold inside the bottle. I dumped it, cleaned the bottle, and made more. It's really cheap to make, so if I lose a little, I'm still saving $piles$ over buying other bottles of spray starch. Probably would be a good idea to store it in the refrigerator.
I also found that if I haven't shaken the bottle in a while, it is more likely to flake, and the reason for that is that the starch and water have separated a little. I've learned to pick up the bottle and shake a little as I get the bottle situated in my hand. If it hasn't been used for a day or two, I shake a little more at first. And the flakes don't hurt anyone anyhow. Ignore them and they will go away.
