No pattern - finished!

I posted a picture of fabrics and a half-baked idea for a baby quilt and thanks to all who had suggestions. This is also the quilt that sent me outside to mow the lawn when my 6" 9-patches turned out to be 3". Funny thing about "mistakes", that mistake turned out to be the saving block as my roommate and I tried every layout we could think of to make this quilt work. I have a large pile of 6" 9-patches that will probably get put on the back, but it's done, the baby is 3 months old, and the mother is in love with the quilt. I will never again start a quilt without a pattern!

Lemonade from lemons. I'm glad you didn't give up. It is beautiful. I'm so glad the mom was in love with it. I love the non traditional, vintage feel to your baby quilt. Awesome job!

Stunning...really fresh and original....you clever quilter!

SandyinZ4 05-06-2012 07:34 PM

All I can say, is sometimes those 'no pattern' ideas turn out great and this one did. I think you should be proud of it. Great design!

audsgirl 05-06-2012 07:51 PM

Well, it sure turned out fantastic! I really love the look and the colors. Isn't Sarah Jane great?

Love it, but I can see where it might cause a headache or two.

QM 05-06-2012 11:11 PM

Very nice indeed!!

nycquilter 05-07-2012 02:15 AM

this is a really adorable quilt. I disagree with your assessment of never again making a quilt without a pattern--you did great so why stop now?

gollytwo 05-07-2012 02:23 AM

This is a wonderful quilt.
You should probably never bother with a pattern.

wannaquilt1 05-07-2012 03:47 AM

wow great job! i can't believe you didn't even have a pattern!

Sunnye 05-07-2012 04:58 AM

Oh, wow! That looks really great.

joyce888 05-07-2012 05:09 AM

When life hands you lemons you made more than lemonade! The quilt is adorable!

mighty 05-07-2012 05:17 AM

It turned out great!!!

willferg 05-07-2012 05:51 AM

How do you do the circular pinwheely sort of block? I've seen it before and thought it was too complicated, but yours look so nice I think I'd give it a try.

Thanks!

CoyoteQuilts 05-07-2012 06:34 AM

Fay, I think you have done a marvelous job without a pattern!

Helen S 05-07-2012 07:24 AM

It's very cute! Love the colors and fabrics.

Thanks!

The 3 layer pinwheel is a 6" block out of a book titled Rotary magic by Nancy Johnson-Srebro. She calls them poseys and they're not that hard to make, which is good for me. The pink and orange polka dots were so similar in tone they don't contrast well.

You got that right! This is adorable! Did you name it yet? "Happy Accident" (as Bob Ross used to call them).

quilter1943 05-07-2012 05:21 PM

I'm thinking that after you were so creative and the finished project is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind quilt that you'll be doing more of this and less making quilts from patterns. And you have the 6" blocks to get you started . . . . .

cwessel47 05-07-2012 05:29 PM

I just love mistake quilts! I've made a few of my own and they make you stretch a bit - which is a good thing. Yours is a thing of beauty - lucky baby!

Cindy60545 05-08-2012 03:27 AM

Fay,
I see a quilter with lots of talent! Follow a pattern if you wish, but don't give up on your own ideas! That's part of being creative! Make the quilt "your own".

jeanneb52 05-08-2012 03:40 AM

How clever you are...it is wonderful. Colors, layout, everything about it just sings.... I love it

sewnbug 05-08-2012 04:02 AM

You took lemons, added water and sugar and made some great lemonade! Great job.

coopah 05-08-2012 04:15 AM

Super quilt!! But you did it!! The fussy cut in the 9 patches...wow! I never would have tried that. You are just awesome!

southernmema 05-08-2012 04:25 AM

It turned out wonderful! You should be proud! A cherished quilt forever.

GammaLou 05-08-2012 04:26 AM

Very cute, turned out wonderful and I'm sure the baby will grow up loving it!

Latrinka 05-08-2012 04:30 AM

Well it turned out so precious!
