Has any of you tried this? A friend sent me a copy of her quilt guild news letter and this little tip was in it. What a Great Idea.
Avoid the frustration of tangled quilt binding with this simple and very handy idea from a quilter who wraps the ready- to-sew binding around an empty toilet-paper roll. She then runs a cord (or ribbon) through the tube, ties the ends of the cord together, and hangs the roll around her neck. The binding rolls easily off the roll without getting tangled. How clever is that?! |
That's a neat idea. I have wrapped the binding around a cone of thread before, but I have not tried this. Thanks for sharing.
That sounds good, but can you picture the doorbell ringing and going to the door with a toilet paper roll hanging around your neck!! LOL :P  :P
I like to put my binding in a plastic (grocery) bag and hang it beside my machine while I sew it to my quilts, it just feeds right out of there and doesn't get tangled up or linty (from the floor).
LMBO I would forget to take it off too. But I am willing to give it a try!!! :D:D:D

How clever is that?! I saw that tip one time on Fons and Porter. At the moment, I have an empty TP roll in a gallon glass jug, just waiting for the next binding. I haven't tried it yet, but it is supposed to sit under your feet and feed out of the jug. Think I saw this tip on Fons and Porter too :P |
I'd probably hang myself with it somehow!
Good idea! |
Great idea.
I use the toilet rolls then hang them on a peg board over my right shoulder. (the peg is at a 90degree angle to my back) It rolls off wonderfully and never tangles.

I may have to give this one a try, thanks for all the tips. |
I wrap the whole binding around two fingers...slide if off my fingers and put it on the extra spool pin on my machine and feed it off from there! Works perfectly!
Great idea!
That would be just my luck that the doorbell would ring. LOL

I saw the other tip on a F&P show!! |
Oh - great tips! I'm gonna try the spool thing on the next binding.
That's a whole lot better than what i can see happening with the toilet paper roll...roll on TP roll, start sewing binding, get up to answer the door, leave binding trailing throughout house, reroll, sit, sew a bit, get up to go to bathroom and forget it's there again, unroll throughout house, reroll...repeat!) |
How clever all of you are! I just do big loopy yards and yards long binding around my neck, and sew it on, next thing you know, I am leaning closer and closer to the machine, then I am choking myself and am a little too close to the machine to get myself free.
All in all I think answering the door with a toilet paper roll is better than hubby finding me choked to death by my own quilt! |
ROTFLMBO!
I use the same method except that I don't use TP rolls. My DH cut me some 1" PVC about 3" long and then smoothed off the edges. I have also used empty adding machine paper rolls. The good thing about this is that as I iron my binding in half, I roll it up on the tube. I pin it at the end and it keeps it nice and pressed until I'm ready to sew on the binding. I've been using this method for several years and I've never strangled myself or answered the door with it around my neck - y'all are so funny!
you guys are too funny. I never imagined starting this thread would give me such a good chuckle for the day. Thanks for all the input other suggestions. Still ROFL :-D
Just skip binding completely, then no problems!LOL
What a great idea. I'm going to try that. Thanks for sharing.
Pam, either one would be bad. LOL But, if you're using the toilet paper roll you can say you're going green. That's almost as good as the person who said she used her dryer lint in the toilet paper roll to start campfires. Who would ever have thought toilet paper rolls could have so many uses.
I put my dryer lint in the compost pile!
I roll my binding up and leave the hole in the center large enough to go over my wrist. It unrolls smoothly as I sew the binding to my quilt.

Well by golly, that is better than choking yourself to death! I am ready to finish a charity quilt, coulda' died for someone who did not know or care about me!!

I also read in a QM to roll the binding around a paper towel roll then put it on one of those free-standing paper towel holders. I'm gunna try that one.
I bought a plastic ribbon dispenser, on sale after Christmas one year. I carefully enlarged two slots into one and use that when I'm binding a quilt. I place the binding inside the box, feed the end through the slot, put the lid on and bind away. No more binding in the wheels of my sewing chair OR slowly choking myself.
I've rolled my binding up and put it into one of those small tissue boxes - works good for me but I will try these other ideas!
I have found using a small plastic bag which I hang from the knob on a cupboard that is next to my sewing machine.

This came up on another thread recently and some members couldn't visualize it. So I took a pic of mine.
Note: I don't use an empty TP roll, but a half used one as the empty ones left too many creases on the last foot or so of my binding. |
That's a good idea too. Love the pic. Thanks
That's a good idea. I'll have to try is soon.

Cbuchanan, I do what I can.
Someone has already gone one step further. You can buy a notion from Clotilde called a Binding buddie that looks like a wooden spool with a neckband. It reminds me of a tinkertoy. Personally, I have neck pain and having anything hanging around my neck like would be too painful.
Great idea. Thank you!
I have been using one for months!Actually 2 of them. But I glued some of that rubber shelf liner to mine so it doesn't slip. Works great!
Great idea.
