I got a call this morning, abuot 5 minutes ago. And this person, who is really nice, asked me if I could make her two t-shirt quilts with her daughters t-shirts,,, blah..blah..blah... I do not quilt for outsiders for a living, I do them once in a while for friends. Anyway, someone gave her my name.
OK this is not a problem, I tell people, no time frame, when it's done. LOL. SHe wants one full size by April 18th and one by May 18th. I was like "you are kidding". She said, well you have plenty of time. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr SO this lady lives in GLen ROse, TExas. I have her info. If anyone else would like to "play" with her , pm me. I just cannot do it. I know some do but not this chickie doodle. I get too many hitches in my git-along and never know when I will have a broken spoke. YOu know. Thanks for letting me vent. Whew!!! Does anyone quilt this fast? I can with a regular top but stabilizing, cutting, etc for a t-shirt quilt. May be some good money for someone. She might even mail it if she thought she could get it back on time. ANy takers. ROFL. Really?? Are you kidding me??? Scat !!!!! |
I would give her this info, since she is in Texas. There are several listings for this service that are in Texas. I know people that have used Texas Tshirt and been very pleased.

Bless your heart and your hitches...ROFL with ya!!

Don't you just wave your magic wand? ? ? ?
|
Oh my! Some people are just insensitive to time constraints. Since she is a non-quilter perhaps she needs a little frank discussion into the realities of quilting.
|
LOL! You are right. Non-quilters really don't understand the time involved. I get this all the time... although I am thinking...at least she offered to pay! I have friends and family who want me to throw out a quilt for free all the time. Hmmmm  If I'm gonna give them a quilt its pretty much going to be on my time and whatever I am in the mood to make! LOL! 8-) Cool that you have posted it here though....I am sure there will be some speedy quilter who can help her and then it'll be a win-win for all!!

She may be reasonable, just not for me. There may be some quitlers who can do that. I already have too many irons in the fire so to speak. And I don't push back others for anyone. I swear I felt my mouth drop open. She knew about wanting it done in Sept. last year when she got my card. Oh well, I wish her well. I am going to make some calles to local ladies who may want to make some fabric cash. :)
Lallyann - I was hoping to find help for her on here. She is not a member but there may be some who can use the mullah.$$$ I wanted to "stop, drop, and roll". (giggling ) |
I do quilts like that for consignment at times but there is no way I would want to feel pressured or rushed as I have a larger family and they come first. Besides that who would want to quilt 24/7 on some one elses project. I find quilts made form clothes intensive, hard on my equiptment and body. How does she know you have plenty of time and nothing to do. I don't like the whole attitude that seems to come with this from the person asking you to do it. Just say no. The people I did consignment quilts for have all been wonderful, supportive, respectful and understanding. When people are not I will not do the quilt for them even if I need the money.
|
I don't have a solution but do understand that time, is not appreciated at times.
I give everything away. and do things on my own time frame. Just turned down a quilt job.. the asker had not idea of the effort. typical.. I like what I make, I like giving . Sat with deadllines way too long to ever sit in that seat again ! |
It's funny when people know you are a member of a guilt guild they think you make a quilt a week. I get requests all the time to make a tee shirt quilt. I tell the truth, I don't like making tee shirt quilts so no I wouldn't want to make one. My kids and grands do not save their tee shirts so I'm off the hook for them!

Why do people think that we can whip something up in nothing flat? Yeah, I have done when I forgot somebody's birthday until the last minute, but that was my choice (and I did a pillow not a full sized quilt), not someone else's crisis.
We used to have a sign that said "Your failure to plan does not constitute my emergency" at the order desk for the print shop of the office supply I worked for. |
Sadly, the overwhelming majority of non-quilters "just don't get it". I've also been asked to make a t-shirt quilt, by a coworker that KNOWS what I earn at work and how busy my life is. Ha! I have plenty of my own projects, thank you. Cheap, mass-produced clothes and bedding have destroyed any understanding the public might have about what it takes to make these things on a home machine. I've rarely heard of such a request involving a payment that approaches minimum wage. They want couture work at sweatshop prices and faster than online vendors even monogram items. You said it, SHEESH!
|
Well, if I did this for a living, I would be scrambling and glad I got the orders. Or if I even had time. True quilter here, I have two swaps to get ready for, 3 repairs for others in the works, one handquilting one for a lady, clening my sewing room, not to mention two guild meetings coming up, a board meeting for a guild, and project linus. I love to stay busy. And this is even slowing down the last few months. I can't do as much as I used to. Didn't mean to sound mean about her needs, just never ceases to amaze me. Adn t-shirt quilts are fun but take time. Thanks for letting me vent.

Oh my gosh, I can't stop laughing!! Flying monkeys..that is so awesome!!! Next time someone says make me (free of course) anything made out of clothes I think My flying monkeys will be flying along with yours!! rofl

It took me a while to learn this--I never make quilts "on request" from friends, nor do I make them for money. Adds too much stress and takes the fun out of my hobby (well, okay passion might be a better word than hobby) I do make quilts for special people in my life, but it has to be my idea.
|
I wouldn't bother passing her on to someone else: if she drastically underestimates the time/amount of labour involved, I imagine the price tag she's thinking of is equally low.

My daughter wanted a quilt made for a nurse that orientated her at the hospital. She called me on a Wednesday and needed the quilt on Sunday. She didn't even know what colors the nurse would like. So being a good mom I bought everything and made a quilt Rose ,Greens And pinks I finally finished the quilt Sunday morning at 10:55 am (stayed up till 2:30 to meander it) My daughter came at 11:00 to pick it up. I was so stiff from quilting. Well the nurse loved it And she asked How I knew her color scheme. I will never do it again. They think you can whip them up in a day. How nice am I

Debbie, good decision on your part. I vote for emerald46's solution: Quote: I would give her this info, since she is in Texas. There are several listings for this service that are in Texas. I know people that have used Texas Tshirt and been very pleased. www.texastshirtquilts.com End Quote. |
you are cracking me up-if it was regular cotton quilts I would tackle it-I hate working with stretchy stuff.
|
I have a friend who is a long arm qulter. She and her friend do t shirt quilts and she says she tells them up fron that the cost will be $350. That way a lot of people back off & that is okay because they aren't her favorite thing to do.
|
Have done one for my niece took 2 years to get to it, now have her sister's shirts, not fun but would only do it for family.
|
I agree with every reply. I had to retire 13 years ago to care for my husband who was greavely injured, and folks seem to think just because I no longer work outside my home I have 24 hours a day to be at their disposal. Quilting is my therapy, but you know what? I don't get to go to therapy every day! Glad for you to vent, and don't ever feel guilty for using that little two letter word"NO".

I have found the solution for when people want me to do something in a short period of time. I do home dec. I price it to the sky. In fact I have someone that left a message yesterday wanting me to make a window seat cushion. I think it is going to be very expensive. I am getting real tired of trying to please strangers and listening to their demands, so I think I may stop doing these things. I would rather be quilting now. Just make the price so ridiculously high they will look elsewhere.

Wouldn't it be nice to be Samantha!!! twitch twitch!

Why didn't you bring out your magic wand? LoL! they just don't get it!

I worked for a company and the Purchasing Manager had a plaque on his wall:
"Lack of Planning on your part, does not necessitate an Emergency on my part!" It certainly applies to more than purchasing. |
yup...funny...
right before Christmas (Dec. 22nd to be exact) i had a lady call me...she's a quilter...and knows time...to ask if i could possibly quilt AND BIND a king size quilt she had just finished...for Christmas-- Joke right?--she was not joking, she really thought i would do this...even though i had contacted all of my regulars (including her) and let them know i was not accepting ANY work after November 15- after all i need to get one or two of my own projects done for the holidays. she was unhappy---and found someone to tie the quilt for her in 2 days...than called me again On Christmas Eve as hubby and i were on the way to family gathering to tell me she had it tied...would i PLEASE do the binding...right then! i told her i was not even home and No, i could not do that... we got back home about 11pm that night and you know what...that king sized quilt in a huge bag were hanging on my front door! with a note saying..."I've given up on this making it for tomorrow-when you get it done please call me" people are funny  |
Thank you for putting a smile on my face.....had to laugh at that one. Tell her if she wants to pay $1,000 apiece plus costs (backing, batting, thread) I'll do it. Would NOT touch it on that short of notice otherwise. Don't even like doing them. And you're right - non-quilters are clueless of the time and costs associated with quilting. I had several calls on my Tropical Memories wallhanging and most I was offered was $200 which didn't even cover cost of materials.....lol. Good luck.
|
OMG tooo funny.

so how much was she willing to pay?
I'm not interested, having never done a t-shirt quilt, but a fellow quilter here was once asked to do a double wedding quilt in 3 months or so, queen size, for $400.00 including materials. What I remember most was the string of angry words the request elicited from everyone in the room... Looking back it is just laughable. |
Grrr! People!!! I had a lady ask me the other day,,"How much do you charge for a quilt??" Period! I looked at her and said,"well, do you want a Ford or a Cadillac?" She had no clue....
|
There is also another quilt website in Texas that will make the quilts for her www.tshirtquiltstx.com. How unrealistic is that lady!
|
It's a wonder she didn't say, " well there's nothing to it, it's very straight forward and won't take you long".
I love people like that, NOT, I make cards, okay a completely different thing but you'd be surprised at how many people give you 2/3 days notice to make "that special" card, |
Deb, I PM'd you
