Not only do rulers not measure the same, but check if your ruler measures the same while using the long side and then the short side. (ie: if you have a 24x6 or 8 1/2 ruler, measure 5 inches using the 24 inch side. Then remeasure using the 6 or 8 1/2 inch side.) One of mine has a difference.

Yep, always use the same ruler for the entire project. Many frustrations can be solved that way.

Very interesting thread!!!!!!

I know the only rulers I will buy are the Olfa rulers. I have enough of a challenge matching my blocks without adding the extra difficulty of the measurements not matching up!

I agree. I've always been told that and tried to practice it. The main thing with the ruler is consistency and that's a sure way to get it by using the same ruler throughout your project.

The rulers aren't the only ones that not necessarily the same, although watching videos of someone lining up their fabrics and lining the ruler up with the lines, they also say, don't use the lines on the mat as true, so what is it, that the companies can't get a "true" inch? This is so necessary to get blocks/quilts that are the correct size.

Guess I'm another lucky one. Measured all my rulers and mats ( Olfa, Quilt in a Day and Fiskers ) next to each other and all match.

I noticed that when I compared two equilateral triangles, they were obviously different. I checked it against a template in EB 25th anniversary quilt book and the one I used is the one that matched her template. YIKES!!!

I use my 6x24 Easy Ruler II -- the first ruler I bought and the one I think I couldn't make quilts without! -- for cutting pieces but then use my Omnigrid square rulers for squaring up HSTs, pinwheels, blocks, etc. There's no difference in measurements in the ones I have, only in hash marks (increments); that is, an inch is an inch, in both kinds of rulers.

I just checked my rulers and looks like that is the reason for my frustration. At least the cutting mats line up. But a couple of my same brand rulers are off also. Ugh!!!
