So I am into my first attempt at FMQ, doing a meander. Stitches aren't all perfect, but I am having fun. I hear a strange noise, but as all is going well, I ignore it. Short time later I decided to check noise. I had FMQ a pamphlet for my Swivel Sweeper to the back of my quilt. Don't remember seeing that on my table when I started quilting. But sure had a time picking out the stitches and getting the darn thing off the back of my quilt.

Darlene 11-28-2010 10:32 AM

Sorry about that sometimes goofy things happen to me too.

ncsewer 11-28-2010 10:47 AM

LOL, you gotta check on those strange noises! Congrats on FMQ, I've done a little but still get nervous.

amma 11-28-2010 10:47 AM

Oh No!! Please forgive my chuckling... I have FMQ'd scraps to my backing before  :D:D:D

lalaland 11-28-2010 11:07 AM

I was sewing the center on a petal pillow last night and sewed the bottom of one of the petals to the center. Felt a little thick while I was sewing but I was sewing on chenille and it's kind of thick anyway so didn't think a whole lot of it. My stitches were tiny too, had to put on my magnifying glasses to pick them out!

mhunt1717 11-28-2010 11:11 AM

I just FMQed part of the corner backing underneath the quilt! Thank goodness for rippers!

dgsmom 11-28-2010 11:19 AM

oh no, i havn't got to fmq yet sounds like it will be fun to do.

dglvr 11-28-2010 11:41 AM

Ohhh what a bummer. Been there done that. I'm sure everyone has atleast once. Mr. seem ripper to the rescue.

Oh dear, LOL, me too, sorry for chucklin'. Should you ever happen to do that again, moistening paper with water will make it easier/quicker to pick. Sewing scraps would be time to get out the seam ripper.

When I make a mistake like that it usually is a long time before I make that mistake again. Sharpens my awareness. :-D Thanks for sharing.

Just remembered, last night I was paper piecing a small part of a larger quilt I was working on. When I was turning I found that I had also sewn in a finished pp part of the larger quilt to the new piece. Seam ripper to my rescue. LOL

smitty 11-28-2010 11:48 AM

sorry to chuckle at your mistake---but it gave me a good laugh. thanks ! I don't know how many times I have quilted the overhang edge into my quilt. and those stitches are so hard to rip out. but a flier takes the cake !

bluteddi 11-28-2010 03:06 PM

Unless that flier was mighty thick.... I would have cut the brouchure off the backing and then let the water of a finial wash do the rest.... no way I'd pic that off!!!!

I'm a lazy seam ripper.

hehehe

MistyMarie 11-28-2010 03:09 PM

I think there is something to be said for having a quilting frame! I too have done something similar. I bought a mid-arm frame so I don't have to use the seam ripper as much!

Izaquilter 11-28-2010 03:11 PM

Don't feel bad. I sewed my FMQ slide to my quilt! This one you are suppose to tape it down & I had just laughed at a girlfriend for doing the same thing! Needless to say I had to rip also!

amandasgramma 11-28-2010 03:16 PM

Don't feel bad....I quilted a pin between the layers on a customer's quilt!!!!! And, of course, it was ball headed pin!!! Had a heck of a time getting it out...............

chaskaquilter 11-28-2010 05:06 PM

Thank you my quilting family, I laughed at myself when I did it, but now I know I am not alone in dumb land. Quilt is done, doesn't look too bad for the first time. I did realize that I have to remember to breath. Also I noticed my mouth is a tiller. I seem to find myself pursing my lips in the direction I want to FMQ. What fun, huh?

isnthatodd 11-28-2010 05:09 PM

Thanks for the chuckle. It's funny only because most of us can relate

Jingle 11-28-2010 05:14 PM

I have FMQed the backing overhang to the back and was able to cut it away without harming the quilt. I will spend hours to do anything instead of ripping if I can keep from it.
Most of us have done lots of things like that.

A friend of mine has a long arm quilting business and she told me, if that ever happens to her in a quilt, she'll work the metal shaft out, cut it off with a wire cutter, then she smashes the pinhead with a hammer. Of course, this is a rare occurance.

twospoiledhuskies 11-28-2010 06:51 PM

Thanks for the heads up. If I ever hear anything, I'll check. :-D

sumcoop 11-29-2010 05:41 AM

we all have been to that land you mention....and had to rip our way out with the seam ripper.
some of us have been there more than once!

bigsister63 11-29-2010 05:52 AM

Always check for strange noises!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

plainpat 11-29-2010 05:58 AM

Be glad it wasn't a finger the needle decided to sew thru....

tina romero masters 11-29-2010 06:07 AM

Omg, that is hysterical! I laughed and laughed ,because I have been known to do really dumb things myself, thanks for sharing! I'm glad your having fun tho.

Dkm 11-29-2010 07:34 AM

Been there. done that and more

lillybeck 11-29-2010 07:47 AM

I needed a good laugh this morning and I am so glad to know others do those things too.

Donna P 11-29-2010 08:27 AM

Well as long as we are all in the same boat here....as I was hand quilting a quilt for a few hours got up to move my hoop and realized i had quilted my shirt to the quilt.....as said thank goodness for rippers....LOL

Therese 11-29-2010 09:20 AM

Great stories, it shows that we all so stuff like that. I have a hard time stopping what I'm doing when I hear something strange-I'm working on the "Stop now and check it out!" part. It will save me lots of time.

Ditto here.

Rettie V. Grama 11-29-2010 03:01 PM

I sewed A strip of Bias tape on the back of a quilt block. Left some of it there and cut off the rest.

DITTO !!!!

Lois-nounoe 11-29-2010 04:17 PM

I made my son and his wife an anniversity quilt for their 10th. Daughter in law told me she felt something sticking her from the quilt!! Since I pin base I must have left a pin between the layers. Thank goodness it was a safty pin and as long as she can keep it closed it will be fine. Since they live in Florida and I'm in Maryland I can't (wish I could) just go down and fix it for her. But from now on I watch carefully where I place all my pins while basting! Especially when most of my quilts are gifts! LOL

suern3 11-29-2010 04:24 PM

Thanks for sharing, it made me laugh, with you, of course, not at you. Keep on FM quilting! It is fun, isn't it? Well, most of the time.

Where's that Damn cat! Bet she did it!!!!

MissJMac 11-29-2010 04:58 PM

I'm at a loss to understand a lot of the shorthand "initials" used on the board (FMQ, LQS, etc).
Has anyone compiled a translation list of some kind that can be reproduced here? Subject matter helps decypher some, but other times I'm just stumped.
Thanks
Janet

ekbuckeye 11-29-2010 05:08 PM

I feel your pain! I have stitched my little cutting mat (2"x6") to my blocks several times while paper piecing. Not to mention scraps, blocks, etc. Frustrating and kind of interesting the things that can be picked up with fabric, but that's the hazard of a slick surface with "stuff" around!

I did that too! I had quite a bit extra instead of the normal couple inches and it got folded underneath. Drat!

IBQLTN 11-29-2010 06:48 PM

I sewed through the HEAD of a flower head quilters pin acouple of weeks ago. I had a heck of a time getting it out! Needless to say, it dulled my needle and had to replace an almost new needle!

ktyree 11-29-2010 07:25 PM

A few weeks ago, I sewed two dollar bills to the back of a costume I was making my grandson. Good thing I saw them- the one whose dollars they were would have been awful mad when they disappeared!
