now I feel old....

Had my Singer 185J set up in the living room, workers were putting in a wire nearby. Young fellow says, "Oh, you have one of those old sewing machines." To me it doesn't look that old. I think it dates from 1958. I date from 1956.
Here is a picture of a similar machine (mine is not as pretty). No picture of me. |
Looks nice to me and you should feel good that you have one dating back to that date and it still works.
Don 't feel bad I am sure he is probably used to seeing the computerized machines and cannot believe anyone would have one of these. I have a Pfaff but not computerized and I do just fine awith it. Keep quilting. |
Beautiful machine. I had a similar experience but I am from 1953. Kid said 'isn't that a sewing machine from the old black and white movies they show on late night tv?'. I have a 1917 Singer 66-1 and she works beautifully.

I try to tell myself that I'm vintage, not old, but not sure that helps.

We are only as old as we feel some days 10 and others 110 today is a 55 day. And as they say age is just a number to mark on legal documents. Doesn't mean squat to anyone but the nosey government.

A Facebook friend posted yesterday, "Don't grow older grudgingly; Some never get the privilege."
It gives me something to meditate on. |

I have that exact machine! It is now my back-up machine, but I will never get rid of it. My Mum bought it as a rent-to-own when she and my Dad were first married, and she gave it to me when she got a new machine, 20-odd years ago. Now she has given up sewing, and I have her second machine as my primary. I cherish both as crafting links across generations: I plan to teach my daughter to sew on the old Singer (so simple and uncomplicated) this summer...

My kids always talk about people and say they are "real old" and I say "about how old" and they'll say 60. It's so funny because in a few years I'll be 60 and 60 ain't old. 90 is old, maybe. I'll know if it's old when I get there.

I got called old tonight a a school concert for commenting that I liked the song "99 Red Balloons"....sigh....
