Now I know why people put patchwork stripes on the back of their quilts.

I just got a package of extra wide backing material in the mail. It was stuffed into one of those cardboard envelopes without a zip strip for opening. I got out my knife and slashed open the the edge. Now the material has a hole in it and the finished quilt will have extra decoration. Has anyone else done this?

QuiltnNan 03-10-2012 05:58 AM

unfortunately, yes :(

LTeachergeorge 03-10-2012 06:04 AM

I tell my my quilting friends that 80% of quilting is Problem Solving. It's all part of the challenge! :D

I'm stealing that statement! 😃

valleyquiltermo 03-10-2012 06:17 AM

I'm always careful about opening my pkgs so as I don't do this very thing.

Dina 03-10-2012 06:28 AM

Oh no! But at least you have a plan that will work. I have not done this, but, because of you, I probably won't now.

Dina

I never open packages that way don't know if something happened in the past but just don't and I guess that is a lesson learned the hard way. -- J

Tweety2911 03-10-2012 07:18 AM

Glad you have a nice attitude about it and not letting it ruin your day :)
Just a thought, have you thought of complaining to the company on how the item was packaged? They may compensate you someway and at the very least change their packaging ways.

Lori S 03-10-2012 07:22 AM

I too learned that lesson the hard way... fortunatley only once.

mighty 03-10-2012 07:22 AM

So sorry, I have not had this happen. You bet I will be very carefull after reading this!!!!

Tartan 03-10-2012 07:23 AM

Bummer! I love decorated and pieced backs. Making lemonade out of lemons, great!

hperttula123 03-10-2012 07:33 AM

So sorry that happened, but yes, I've done that before. Lol. You grin and throw in a stripe of some of your extra fabrics from the quilt. :)

SunlitenSmiles 03-11-2012 02:48 AM

to date i have only ordered from Keepsake Quilting and they package their mailing like wedding gifts!!!!!!

but now, thanks to you for sharing, i will always be very careful........sorry this happened to you but bless you for warning us.

new2q 03-11-2012 02:56 AM

yep.....the good news is you will probably never do it again :)

JENNR8R 03-11-2012 03:35 AM

I call this a design opportunity! :)

kimbrennan 03-11-2012 05:37 AM

LOL...me too! I very rarely use a full pattern...I problem solve with the fabric I have....part of my "artistic creativity"!

hairquilt 03-11-2012 05:51 AM

I did the very same thing on a quilt that Charisma mailed back to me!. It was a auction quilt & I just put a little bit of wonderunder on the 2 tiny snip holes & pressed them closed. Thank heavens it was on the back part of the quilt & probably won't ever be known!! Lesson learned for sure!

fallonquilter 03-11-2012 06:09 AM

Put your quilt label over the whole :)

Whoa -- that's a good suggestion!

KathyKat 03-11-2012 07:38 AM

That has happened to me yet but I have measured wrong and cut the backing too short even though I had enough fabric. So I cut that piece in half and put a strip of blocks in from fabric used in the top. I've also had to cut a flaw out of backing fabric and then fixed it the same way. It's a pretty solution.:)

JanieH 03-11-2012 08:51 AM

I will definitely be on the alert for this. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

It sounds like this is where the name patch will go. The spot has been chosen for you. hehehe

penski 03-11-2012 09:53 AM

that has never happened to me , but next time i open a package i wil be extra careful, thank you

solstice3 03-11-2012 11:23 AM

Sorry that happened. Blocks / patches on the back will solve the issue. A lot of times I add a strip of pieces to get the extra inches .

glenda5253 03-11-2012 11:58 AM

Glad you have your problem solved. Thanks for the warning!

lfstamper 03-11-2012 12:02 PM

Just a new opportunity!

mountain deb 03-11-2012 01:26 PM

I was cutting out scrub tops and did not pay attention. When I grabbed the back pieces (I like mass producing), I thought I did not cut out the front "V" neck and started cutting it out, only to realize my mistake. Did some fancy patching and still wear them as a reminder to myself to be careful. Oddly enough, no one at work has ever commneted on it.

This makes me feel better about the issues I create !! Guess the problem solving is good for my 73 year old brain !!!

cathyvv 03-11-2012 02:09 PM

And you created an opportunity to improvise! One thing I like to do with quilt backs is put a strip of a fabric that is or some 'extra' (which means 'not quite right but arranged to look good')blocks from the top on one side. It saves me $$, uses the blocks, and, if the quilt is a small childs charity quilt, gives the child a more grown up alternative to the top as he or she grows up.

bunbytes 03-11-2012 02:13 PM

That happened to me when a friend sent a sweatshirt for my youngest. I cut it right in the neck! Wrapping the fabric (or shirt) would prevent that. I'd let the seller know they should invest in a little tissue paper.

...I've been doin' lots and lots of rippin' these days. Perhaps more planning would help reduce this task....

psthreads 03-11-2012 04:49 PM

I will be careful!!! Great solutions.

Jingle 03-11-2012 05:56 PM

I have put blocks, strips on my quilt backs but only to make the backing big enough or to be creative. I always tear packages open or cut tape with scissors. A big part of sewing anything is knowing how to 'fix' screw ups.

leevenora 03-11-2012 06:03 PM

Thanks to you, I also will be very carefull now.

wraez 03-11-2012 06:24 PM

Gratefully no, not to fabric but I did cut into my tea bag today cuz I wanted to save the fancy, pretty sleeve that it was in, snipped off the bottom of both. I wasn't happy but your boo boo trumps mine big time. I'm sure that your creativity will make a wonderful quilt anyway.

Mkotch 03-12-2012 02:37 AM

That's what applique is for! Or you could put the label over that part. Ask me how I know!!

jeanneb52 03-12-2012 02:52 AM

Whoa that must have hurt! Thanks for the reminder toi be verrrry careful when opening an envelope with a knife.

sasissy 03-12-2012 03:56 AM

We often have this happen as the customs agent opens every package with a box cutter!!! It is so frustrating but does make for some interesting fixes!

maryfrang 03-12-2012 05:15 AM

I do not use one of those knives for opening the packages. I usually try to open an end. So sorry, but your quilt will be specially yours.

CarrieC 03-12-2012 05:22 AM

Oh I did - not on material but on a red tie for my DH. He rarely likes red in his ties, and I found THE PERFECT one - and paid dearly. I gleefully cut the top of the package. I know how you feel! All it takes is one time and you learn that lesson!
