Don't feel alone - I take my featherweight and a project on vacation and to the cottage all the time. You want it to go away? I hope it never does!

Mis. E 05-31-2011 04:51 AM

Welcome from Il.
Sorry to tell you that you now have a terminal addition. The only difference is that we make beautiful & useful quilts, etc.

Have you been on a shop hop yet? If not plan on the ones in the fall, but you will have to take alot of $$$.

Where are you in Il.? I from about 30 miles west of Chicago.
There also is a bus trip shop hop this fall that goes up into Wis.

bjrusty 05-31-2011 05:05 AM

No cure, lol. Wait till you have 3 or more working the same time, fuuuun. lol. Then you know you're a quilter. Barb

suzee 05-31-2011 05:15 AM

Hi Deb, Nope, there's no known cure. But why would you want one? Just enjoy the ride. We're all here to help you through the difficult times. And just think, someday, you'll be able to return the favor by mentoring another new "quiltaholic"

wyogrannie 05-31-2011 05:21 AM

LOL!! I was just telling my husband about the dream I had buying more fabric. from a store that wasn't going to be carrying fabric any longer. I may need hlp too. Is there a Q.A.(quilters anonamous) group anywhere?? Not that I would EVER go!! I'm have waaaay to much fun being adicted.

grandma Janice 05-31-2011 05:36 AM

I agree with all the statements offered here, and I really enjoy my quilting. you didn't mention your age(this sometimes makes a difference) or if you have a DH . My theory is that we shouldn't let anything we do take complete control of our lives. Enjoy as long as you don't shortchange your family or spend more than you can afford. Welcome to the board. you are in good company.

so funny! what a great thought to start the day-

you've tapped into your creative spirit - and that is limitless!

mimee4 05-31-2011 05:41 AM

Oh it's an addiction. But such a pleasant one. Doesn't harm anyone, except when the piles of fabric threaten to fall on someone. And you get to make such beautiful things - no hallucinations - the beauty is real. Enjoy!

emlee51 05-31-2011 05:42 AM

Hi, and welcome from Montana...I second all of the above comments...before I became addicted to quilting I was addicted to crafting/painting, etc...when I was invited to a quilting retreat that was all she wrote! I gave away all my paints, brushes, etc., and filled my room with fabric! Quite the madding addiction from which I hope I never recover!

svenskaflicka1 05-31-2011 05:49 AM

i was a "fabriholic" long before i was a quilter. this i a convenient way of managing that stash/collection. making renaissance costumes is a terrific way of managing it, too--it takes about five yards of any given beautiful fabric to even begin to address a period dress. the thing is, though, that a quilt is more practical, keeps more than one person covered, and will please a larger portion of the population!

(but i'm still a renaissance junkie, too)

barbo117 05-31-2011 06:19 AM

I am afraid you are addicted. Like you, I think about quilting all the time, planning my next quilt, my next quilting related purchase and scouting the internet for local quilt shops where we will vacation this year. Sunday morning in church I was fixated on the woman in front of me. She had a lovely patterned blouse on that I could visualize using to make a quilt. I so wanted to dig in purse for a pencil and paper so I could sketch the design so I wouldn't forget by the time I got home. Told hubby about it on the way home and he just shook his head. Yipes, I am so glad I am not the only one. Enjoy your obsession, could have a lot worse things on our minds than guilting!!!

I feel exactly like that too---Boy if I got all the stuff done in the day time that I do in my sleep I would really be doing good

KarenB 05-31-2011 06:22 AM

I know how you feel...I feel the same way...and what I have found is a bunch of people that make me feel normal! Love this board!

did you say "guilting"? Was that a slip of the finger, or some underlying guilt complex? (Couldn't resist!!!):-D

katsewnsew 05-31-2011 06:44 AM

Hi there and welcome to the Board from Arizona! Yep, you are addicted, but hey, it does get "better"!!! Enjoy the ride with us!

jshorty 05-31-2011 06:55 AM

I do agree with you. I took my 1st quilt class in January & now I think I am obsessed/addicted. Right now I have 3 unfinished quilt projects, but still had to go to the LQS for their sales over the weekend. I'm on the sew machine until 3am then get a couple hrs sleep then back at it.

barbo117 05-31-2011 07:13 AM

Oh my sounds like my guilty conscious is showing!!! LOL

greaterexp 05-31-2011 07:52 AM

You're doomed, but in good company. We'll all go down together.

misoop 05-31-2011 07:56 AM

Addiction with no cure or rehab! :)

quiltnmore 05-31-2011 07:57 AM

I took my sewing/embroidery machine camping also. It was a time I COULD sew without neglecting the house. Now I sold the camper and have 3 machines. I also still leave the house go. It is my therapy as well. I just don't have to haul everything to a campsite. I camp in front of the machine!

I think the 12 step cure would include another machine and more stash, then gadgets and more embroidery thread, oh yeah, and quilting patterns or books. . .

Prairie Quilter 05-31-2011 07:59 AM

Embrace it .......... the obsession only grows, and Grows, and GROWS !!! :-D Ain't it GRAND ???

mmonroe 05-31-2011 08:04 AM

Ha! Are you married? Tell him he better get used to it. :)

Very well put.
I always thought I wasn't artistic or creative - can't draw, can't paint, get lucky with photos once in a while... I'd see people designing their own patterns and such and think No Way I can do anything without that step by step pattern. Suddenly one day something clicked -- the things I've been working on lately are more techniques than patterns - and the addiction has only gotten worse.... My husband asked me last night - is this all you like to do anymore?

And yes - I am wanting a hand crank machine so I can sew even while camping

Lorae Radunz 05-31-2011 08:10 AM

Hop on & enjoy the ride! It just gets better & better!

JAK 05-31-2011 09:07 AM

Well if you are obsessed then so am I :) I just started quilting in January and like the others on this site, I am always on the lookout for fabric, I am trying decide what to make next before I am finished one, I spend hours on the internet looking at patterns, tutorials and feel abused if I don't get to read this site every day. We just purchased a travel trailer and placed it on a seasonal lot at a campground and my first thought was where I would be able to sew while camping. And, I have to admit when I wake up during the night and can't get back to sleep I think about projects. I hate to even admit this one but......I took a bag of trash down to the dumpster in the campground on Saturday night and someone has stood one of those small ironing boards for a table top out there. It was just about brand new and not even dirty. I was so elated I almost ran back to the camper. I washed the cover even though it wasn't even dirty and just used it this morning and it is absolutely perfect. So I guess all I can say is..........Welcome to the Club!!

donnalynett 05-31-2011 09:30 AM

I have withdrawals if I don't get to quilt for a day.......

frostbaa 05-31-2011 09:30 AM

HA-HA!!!

trolleystation 05-31-2011 10:22 AM

Your best 'help' is this board. We will glaldy enourage you to enlarge your stash, cut out lots of quilt patterns, browse the QB, and, eat lots of chocolate.

grammysharon 05-31-2011 10:57 AM

Yes you definitely need help, but I live too far away from you. I suggest you find a local quilt club and make friends there so you will have someone to help you. They will help you go shopping for fabric. They will help you by sharing advice and tips; by sharing patterns and showing their quilts so you see new ones that you just have to make.
We here on the board will also help you in every way possible. Mainly, tho, we are limited to giving you praise and encouragement and making sure you have lots of things to read and look at when you are here.
Welcome to the club!!! Hugs and smilesssss

grandjan 05-31-2011 12:26 PM

Nah. You don't need help. Maybe someone to shop with so you can share the fun. Enjoy yourself.

TacoMama 05-31-2011 12:29 PM

You will be addicted and there is no cure! It's fabraholic obsession/compulsion disease..........

meanmom 05-31-2011 02:16 PM

Nope there is no cure. The disease tends to get worse over time. The more experienced of a quilter you become the more ideas you will have in your mind and the more fabric you will need.
