I have been watching the progress of all of these wonderful OBW's and I love the cube blocks that some people have used. I did a search and look what I found:

I don't understand the OBW cubes thing. Can someone explain it to me? I love the obw blocks... but why the addition of cubes???

I too can't wait to see what new twists the book will offer!

Deedles, I think the purpose of the cubes is to add an extra dimension to a quilt that's maybe a little bland otherwise or to provide a transition between awkward areas, for example if you get very light and very dark blocks, the cubes used between them can make them flow better. They provide a focal point and help the eye travel around the quilt as well. If used badly, ie just plonked in without any thought, they can dominate and spoil the design but used carefully and thoughtfully, are a great design tool. Plus the 3D effect really gives a quilt depth. That's just my opinion, others may think differently. :-D

Hi April, I've only just received the third one but having a quick flick through, it does seem to give all the info on stacking and cutting repeats and constructing the basic hex blocks so no, you don't actually need the first 2 books as well, although I like them both for the extra ideas they have on borders, layouts etc. Also, only the first book gives the method for the octogans so you'd need to get that if you wanted to do those ones. :-D The second one seems to give additional cube construction techniques that aren't in the third one too. But as I said, I only flicked through the 3rd one as it only arrived this morning! :-D

Thanks so much K! I had thought to get all three because I figured there would be neat things in each one. I am dying to make an OBW with the cubes in it and believe it or not I found the perfect material and it will be for hubby as it is tools lol

i just bought that one. I bought it through Connecting Threads. their books are 40% off I believe that book was $14 through them? Can't wait for it to get here but I think i'm still going to order the OBW encore book as well.

I received my book, and in looking through it, there are some AWESOME cubes. They show quite a few cube combinations, and the diagrams for them, but I was very disappointed over the lack of cutting instructions for most of them.
