If you have not figured it out yet I see your problem. You need too add strips on each adjacent side like you would a log cabin. You skipped a side and went to opposite edges

I have made many octagon table toppers. When I add on a border, I add the first border on every other edge for a total of 4 pieces. Then I trim them off so that the end of the added piece is even with the edge of the material that doesn't have a border piece added to it. Then I add the other 4 border pieces and trim them. I hope this explains how I do it and it works for me.

twinkie that is exactly what i want to do with my dresdon !! your is beautiful !!! i do ok on my first border , but ... some how i trim my second border wrong, i put it on then trim it even with my first border , that is next to it .... and that creates more of a triangle....
