I was doing fusible applique and did I use fabric in between my iron and the fusible pieces? Oh heck no, cuz I've never had a problem and what could happen anyway?! Well, it happened. I've got that fusible gunk all over the sole of my iron. How the heck did that happen? But now -- how do I get it off?
there are lots of ideas for getting the last few bits off, but for the initial cleaning, warm the iron and run it over a brown paper bag..the rougher the bag the better..the texture of the paper bag helps pull off a lot of the gunk. Just make sure that you move to a clean part of the bag for each swipe of the iron. I've also been successful at using rough toweling rags to wipe across the iron when it's warm...but neither of these takes off all the gunk. Good luck.

You are not a lone. Sorry I can't help you but I have done the same thing and worse. I had to buy a new iron. Also, I fused an entire sheet to the top of my ironing board. LOL
Good luck. Rumbols |
I just heard you could rub your warm iron over one of those Mr Clean Magic Eraser! I also have rubbed the bottom of my iron with scrunched up tin foil! Maybe some of this will help.
las time i did that, i put the iron into the oven and turned up to 500 whcih i don't recoment to you. if i do it agin, an i will, i aim to go at it with a blow tortch

Ok, well the paper bag idea didn't really do much, but while the iron was warm, I grabbed an old washcloth rag and rubbed the sole really hard. Took it all off!! Yay!!! Ok, ok, I've learned my lesson

They sell a product called Iron -OFF at Jo ann's it will clean up the fusible. Ask me how I know
I keep a tube close to my ironing board. |
THANKS for all the help AND laughs!

I did the same thing. I also read about a great way to clean it off right here onthe QB. Wipe your hot iron with a used dryer sheet. worked wonders and came right off.
I have used the fabric softener sheets that you put in the dryer to get it off. I believe they are Bounty or something like that.
next time, remember to use a teflon pressing sheet between your iron that project!
BUT if you do get sticky on it, the brown paper bag and SALT would have worked! |

I had such a mess on my iron one time I used my 50% coupon at JoAnns and got the Rowenta Iron Cleaning kit. It was worth the money. Comes with a tube of cleaner and a couple of cloths for using it, and polishing up the sole plate. Took it right off.
I broke down and bought a product from my LQS for occasions such as yours. It's called iron-off and is a Dritz product in a 1 oz tube. I paid $5.99 for it, but shall be on the look out for it at Joanne's or the dollar store. It works great....saw it action at my quilt class, so I was sold.

good luck, sherryl candlequilter |
Mr Clean works great.
[quote=candlequilter.I have used a fabric softener sheet before and it worked wonderfully and is alot less expensive than the iron-off sheets. Plus I normally have them on hand.
candlequilter[/quote] I use the dryer sheets, as well. I think the expensive iron-off sheets are actually used dryer sheets. They seem almost the same. |

I keep a Scotch Brite Heavy Green Scouring Pad near my iron and whenever I get overzealous and get adhesive on my iron I just run my hot iron across it a couple of times giving one little burst of steam and the goop comes off. It hasn't scratched the plate either.

I've done it several times...I just heat to hotest point and then just take a wad of old fabric and rub it right off.
I have hubby save me used dryer sheets just for this purpose. Learned that trick when youngest son wanted to be Buzz Lightyear for halloween about 8 years ago or so... and got wonderunder all over the place... used dryer sheets cleaned it right up, recycle-repurpose-reuse! :)
I use goo-gone
When my iron got gunky the Magic Eraser was the only thing that worked, and it worked really fast with little effort on my part.
I got that mess on my shiny iron and my husband cleaned it for me. Took him almost an hour with a lot of scraping and goof off and finally some buffing compound. I was told to NOT do that again.

Haven't gotten the iron sticky YET but so glad to learn all these tips. Thanks

I use waxed paper to get it off my iron when the iron is hot.

Goo Gone works for anything sticky.
Let your iron cool off, then spray with goo gone. Get it at walmart. Has lots of uses.
I read somewhere that you should wet a towel with vinegar then sprinkle the towel with salt and then run your iron over it. Haven't tried it myself but it can't hurt!
Thank goodness someone asked. I've got that stuff all over my iron, ironing board cover and probably the wall (lol) Now, maybe I can clean it all off.
Get a wet terry cloth and some salt. Run your iron
over the wet terry cloth and then the salt and then back over the terry cloth and press firmly back and forth. This should do the trick. |
I have a teflon coated sole on my iron and found plain old rubbing alcohol works great. Put a little on a piece of paper towel and run warm iron over it. Clean as a whistle and no scratches on the teflon.
Try goo gone - worked like a charm on mine.
Great tips here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've done this in the past, couldn't find my Teflon sheet. Now I use parchment paper during my fusing project in place of telfon sheets. Yes, it's the roll of paper found in the grocery store with waxed paper or in a baking section. Nothing seems to stick to it. I also use it when I am preparing to seal things with self-sealing laminating sheets.
I have cleaned gunk off the bottom of my iron, hot or cold with one of those Mr.Clean erasers. Saw it on a video on the web.
