How many of you enjoy old school handquilting? For me, it's a chance to revisit each of the fabrics and create a new dimension/topography from the three layers. I also find it so relaxing after a hectic day. Gives the finished project a nice drape about it too.
I do, but I usually save it for very special projects because of the time involved.

I've done small pieces and really enjoyed it; I want to try a large quilt but I'm hesitating because of the time involved.
Aw heck, I'm going to go for it! |
i enjoy hand piecing- alot- but am not a big fan of hand quilting- but hand piecing i really enjoy. i guess i'm too impatient for the hand quilting- although i do do it once in a while- only on small projects- by the time i get to the quilting part of a project i just want it done- and it is much easier-faster to just load it up and quilt it!
but if it's something small-special i will take the time to hand quilt it== it amazes me sometimes how much i can get done hand piecing- so i don't know why i feel the quilting takes so long---i guess it's just the whole- i'm over it-and want it done by the time i get it all together- i love to buy items that are hand quilted! |
oops double post---doggone it! my impatience shining through ;)
I have such a hard time getting through all the layers that I usually machine quilt.
Welcome to the board!
I really enjoy hand quilting, although I do some machine work from time to time. You'll find there are some dedicated hand quilters here. It does take a long time, but I just consider it quality time with myself. :) Janet |
I FMQ but I am trying to learn to hand quilt. I am enjoying it but my stitches :? I have a LOT to learn but I do enjoy it.
hand quilter here
I had to attempt hand quilting on one block for a sampler class I took a few years back with Suzie Payne. Thought sewing straight stitches on an around the world block would be a piece of cake. Ha! Not so. I did finish the block and made it into a pillow. At least I can say that I've done it. I prefer FMQ.
I love it and I am so much better at it than machine quilting. I just hate that it takes me forever to finish a quilt when I have so many that I want to do.
I hand quilt but not very well, but they manage to stay together...
I admit I have only done a few pieces that are hand quilted, although I do want to do more. I love to piece, but I'm not that fond of the quilting side of things......lucky for me that my husband loves to longarm quilt my tops! That said, I did recently hand piece a small hexagon table topper and then hand quilted it. I really did enjoy it....reminded me of my grandmother, as her favorite block was the hexagon, and she hand quilted everything. Someday my goal is to be as talented as her...but I've got a long way to go :)

you mean there's another way to quilt besides hand quilting??? Oh my!!! Who woulda thunk it??? ;)
Obviously, I am a hand-quilter - it's my therapy. The money I save goes towards buying more fabric and notions! |
I hand quilt almost everything. Every quilt I have made except 2 recent ones have been hand quilted. I did SITD machine quilt 2 small quilts this summer that needed to be done quickly and they were gifts. FMQ does not interest me.
I admire hand quilting and those who do it, but it's not for me. I took a class to see if I would like it, but it didn't take. I do have a quilt top that someone started to quilt by hand, and I would like to finish it someday.
I'm a hand quilter. Love the look and feel.
I love to hand quilt. I always have one on the frame and work on it in the evenings when I 'm watching TV. Its a great way to relax and unwind at the end of the day. I hand quilt any reproduction fabric quilts like 1930's repros. I want them to have the old fashion look.
I think our mothers and grandmothers loved the process of quilting as much as the finished product. It was a relaxing way to spend the long evenings after a physically hard day. I love the slow process and feel the quilt is all mine when it's done.
I love handquilting. It makes me feel connected to the past and women like my GrandMother. I have a quilt she made some 60 years ago called the Fruit Basket. Even though I didn't know her very well, that quilt was my inspiration for learning to quilt.
I hand quilt almost every one! I love it!
I love the look of hand quilting much better then machine quilting. I do think machine quilting is much stronger for a quilt that's going to be used. I hope to do some smaller wall hangings soon and hand quilt them.
I hand quilt because that's the only way I know how. But am going to try machine quilting some small things for Christmas presents. I have 2 hand-projects going and try to do a little on each every day. Between those quilts, this board, and Leah Day's website, I don't know when I'll have time to learn to machine quilt!
Welcome to the board!!
I love to hand quilt- it's very relaxing and I love the look. I'm learning to machine quilt but will always have a hand quilted quilt in the works :) |
hand quilter here as well
Love to hand quilt! To me it's more relaxing than struggling with the "oops" of a machine. I can pick it up and work as long (or a short a time) as I want. I live in a 35' fifth wheel so having a place to keep a machine up and handy doesn't work. I have a small machine with me that I use for mending, etc. but that's not even relaxing to me. So hand quilting is for me!
I love handsewing. I guess that's why my first love is counted cross stitch. Can be done anywhere. Always have a piece next to my chair and bed. I've done a bit of hand quilting on small things. Love it, but I'm extremely slow, so save it for small/special projects. I'm in awe of those quilters who hand quilt their quilts. To me, that's a real quilter.
I hand quilt. I just finished tying a jeans material quilt. I don't enjoy that so much.

I love to hand quilt. I do on special projects. I have 3 I'm working on now. The quilts are queen size. Some quilts just call out hand quilt. It is relaxing for me also.
I love hand quilting but since I put a hole through my favorite thimble I haven't done any. Because my hands are starting to complain I have started to just do hand quilting on special quilts. I am going to machine quilt the rest . I have a few that are going to be tied it just seems thats what the tops ask for.
I have not mastered hand quilting. I have tried but no luck. Guess I should try again.
I hope to! I have such a terrible time machine quilting that I have decided the only way for me to get the quilt to look the way I want is to hand quilt it :-) I have been quilting the current quilt hoopless (Sharon Schamblys way), but I've also ordered a hoop with a stand and some different thimbles. So when they arrive I will using them. I just love the way handquilting looks, but I am pretty slow right now.
I'm just learning how to hand piece and I have to admit that it is great. I like projects that I can take with me so it is great for that as well. Now I have my hand applique and now my piecing to take along with me.
I just started hand quilting a couple of months ago, but I already love it. I'm making a sampler quilt and I was going to machine quilt it because it didn't seem special enough for hand quilting. Then I realized that if I really want to practice my hand quilting what better way to improve than working on a bed size quilt to which I am not too attached.
i am a very new quilter and not sure i know what 'old school' quilting is...is it the same as hand quilting? thanks....gina

I love hand quilting but only use it for special small quilts like for grand babies. I don't have the room to stretch a large quilt on a frame, and I just can't handle it on my lap in a small hoop for that long.
