What about a black and white quilt with each of the school colors placed here and there as the splashes of color? Then the colors would be expected rather than forced.

Make two quilts!

Hello Everyone, I'm new to the Quilting Board website but would like to offer a neat quilt block for this situation: Churn Dash. Use white for the center square and then use the small printed (with white background) for each university. I've seen the fabric at Joann's and Hancocks . . . you could even "anchor" the triangle sections with a solid color (like red/crimson for UA and blue for UF) that way none of the colors would be too shocking. Just a thought thrown in the mix. By the way - we have a "split marriage" . . . hubby graduated from UF and my daughters and I from UA ;-)

thank you every one for so many great ideas. time to sit down with the graph paper and colored pencils and put them down and see what i like best. I would use EQ put I can't seem to get the hang of it.

My son is a Raider's fan (black and silver) and my DIL is a Steeler's fan (black and yellow)...for their anniversary I mad each a twin size 4 patch but stitched them together...which made a full size quilt! They loved it!!

Congratulations! My youngest just got married and we are over the moon. As for your call for quilt suggestions, I think given the red/black///blue/orange color scheme, a variation on the 9-patch would be perfect. Joyce Peaden wrote a book called Irish Chain Quilts & Related Patterns, one of which she calls the Lambfold (on page 40).

I was fooling around with your colors in EQ7 and I think this pattern could work for you on a single side. The pattern is a 9 patch, but essentially solid except for the center square. The idea is that you alternate the predominant and single center colors in a Block A/Block B scenario. But I think it also works in a 4-block pattern, like this:

A-Red B-Blue C-Black D-Orange
RRR + BBB + BBB + OOO
RBR BOB BRB OBO
RRR BBB BBB OOO

Although the pattern is as old as the Irish Chain itself, it looks very contemporary, and with your gator color schemes, it could be absolutely stunning (kaffe-Fasset-like). In the few rows I played around with, I alternated the first block colors every other row. You could leave the center of every block a neutral color for the autographs, or you could just instruct people to sign in the center square or the squares surrounding the center, whichever is lighter.

Whatever you do, post pictures when you get it figured out! Congratulations again.

All I have to say is I'm glad I don't have to make this quilt. I'm sure it will be pretty though.

Maybe you could make the center blocks in one teams colors, then add a wide black border to separate the colors. Then add the a section of blocks around the center and borders in the other teams colors. You could add a second black border and put corner block with the two team colors in alternate corners. Good luck how to see this quilt sounds like a great challenge.

Lots of good suggestions here, but I love the pattern in the #22 post. It would be easy to make the center blocks the colors of the teams. The centers could be 4-patch or 1/2 triangles (or combo) alternating the team blocks. For borders, do top and one side one team's colors, then the bottom and other side for the other team. Hope you will post a picture when it's completed. Good luck!

Maybe snowball blocks?? Each of the 4 corners could be a different color-orange-blue-red-black...good luck!
