Once You Catch Your Breath After Christmas ... What's Your Next Project?

Only a few days to go and I have FOUR quilts to finish! Eeeeeek!

So once the Christmas (or Channukah) quilting frenzy is over and done with and you've had a chance to catch your breath, what is on your agenda?

I got an early Christmas present from my husband - three gorgeous Amish cross stitch machine embroidery sets that I've had my eye on for months. I really love them because they remind me of the hand cross stitch designs I did as a girl. Not sure what fabric to use - maybe muslin? What do you think?

Here are the designs:

I have a birthday quilt to make for a friend...and we usually get together in Feb/Mar to share our birthdays...this year she wants to go to the Road to California Quilt show with me in Jan. I need to start NOW.

Rose L 12-22-2011 11:39 AM

Krystyna, those embroidery patterns are just wonderful. I hope you'll share pictures when get some of them stitched out.
For myself...UFO's! I have four Christmas quilts that I got pieced and partially quilted. I'll have to finish them for next year for the grand kids. I was a little too ambitious a little too late. I have several other quilt tops that need to be quilted and bound so I'm planning to get those done and out of the way. I have three must make quilts coming up this year also. Then I'm in process of making quilts for all of my five sisters and have three more of those to get done. I won't run out of work anytime soon. I also took on the job of making quilt samples for my friend's quilt shop down in the city. She opens the second week of January. It should be a fun year!

Merry Christmas,
Rose L

Krystyna 12-22-2011 11:51 AM

Rose, aren't they wonderful? Sounds like you'll be busy!
I forgot to mention that my future DIL has just finished her first quilt so I'm sure we'll be busy together!

jlm5419 12-22-2011 11:57 AM

My sister has sent me a kit for a lovely log cabin quilt, I think it is called "Sliced Bread." There is also a crib-size quilt awaiting quilting, and a CW in progress.

Gramie bj 12-22-2011 12:05 PM

Mad Mimm 12-22-2011 12:06 PM

I have to finish FMQ-ing a baby quilt for my nephew and then finish a batik quilt I started last January (eek!). After that, I am doing an Asian Scrappy Road (from Quilters World magazine) for our master bedroom. Should keep me busy for a long, long while - I am sew slow!!!!

lfstamper 12-22-2011 12:19 PM

How fun these designs will be. Enjoy and please post the special items you make. Great DH too!

kat112000 12-22-2011 12:34 PM

Tons of UFO's and kits that I have purchased and not done anything with. I am not going to buy any more fabric unless it is to finish a project!!!!

dakotamaid 12-22-2011 12:39 PM

Clean up the sewing room, do a couple of donation kid's quilts and get started on my Dear Jane quilt. All this while running around the country with hubby. He wants to go south for a few weeks.

Pat P 12-22-2011 12:39 PM

after Christmas

Collapse first, Then pick myself up--- quilt three tops go thru my scraps from many years of sewing and cut out charm squares, Make up a kit quilt that I purchased from a shop hop and a Halloween quilt. Read some good books, maybe talk my DH into a month in Fla.

jbud2 12-22-2011 12:41 PM

I have to make a baby quilt for my granddaughter that is due early April, possibly on my birthday! And we picked names for Christmas 2012 so I can make a quilt for that person. My sewing year will fill up!

Becky Crafts 12-22-2011 12:42 PM

After I get done with the four wolf panels I'm presently working on for DS, I will make the Magical Yule panel for ME. I worked really hard to find/get the border fabric as shown in Quilter's World. I think it's SO pretty!

Debbie B 12-22-2011 12:47 PM

When I was in TN a few months ago my aunt gave me a full size log cabin quilt top that she had hand pieced 20 years ago. She said that she had lost interest in it and it was just taking up space. She knew that I had bought a Juki/frame and that I'm in the learning stages...I will be marking the squares with a stencil called Lady Slippers, putting it on my frame and then start quilting it.

Buzzy Bee 12-22-2011 01:08 PM

I will keep on keeping on......there is no time to rest !!!! LOL

littlesurfer 12-22-2011 01:53 PM

I have some BOM quilts to finish.

donac 12-22-2011 03:14 PM

I have my son's quilt to quilt after I finish my mom's which is not going to get done before Christmas. I have lots of UFOs to finish but a new project just came up this week.

I have had a coupleof weeks where all I have heard from friends is bad new. SO many people are in the hospital or are having treatment for one thing or another. I just heard someone who I never thought would be pregnant is pregnant. I work with her and her husband for many years now. They know it is a little girl so I am going to start looking for pink fabric.

Kathy, I could have written this. I tried the "no buying moratorium" for 2011 but didn't make it past Feb. Good luck

DebraK 12-22-2011 04:52 PM

Between finishing of UFOs, I'm either going to start a floral Log Cabin ala BarnBum or a Labyrinth quilt.

LindaM49 12-22-2011 05:43 PM

The first thing I want to do is rearrange my sewing/quilting room. I am planning to buy a new machine in a couple of months. I really need to buy either a 6' or 8' table and then a smaller one so I have more room. Right now my machine is sitting on the top of my mother's old Kenmore machine/cabinet. I have NO room to my left because I can't open it up...and where it's sitting it would hit the wall anyway. I have a large antique bureau that was my grandmothers so hubby is going to clean it up for me and I'll be able to store fabric and supplies in it...instead of crates and boxes piled all over the place. Once I get everything the way that I want it...then I will start with the wallhanging kit that I bought months ago. Also have fabric to make 3 wallhangings...bought most of it back in the summer. As far as purchases...the only thing I will need for the wallhangings is batting and backing fabric. I may have bought backing fabric for one of them when I ordered all the piecing fabric from fabric.com. See...I don't even know what I have because it's in bags and boxes piled up on the floor. I need to get semi-organized before I buy the Janome 6600...I CAN'T WAIT!!!

gaby4v 12-22-2011 06:12 PM

I need to get started on my daughter's wedding quilt. Got almost all the fabric already to go, just need to find a backing.

valsma 12-22-2011 06:17 PM

I decided for this year since i'm fairly new to quilting and my skills are still improving I am not giving any quilts this year. However once this season is over I will try and get to work on some of the UFO's I have that need to be quilted that are meant for people. I will start making other gifts specifically through out the year to give for gifts next Christmas.

Patches1900 12-22-2011 06:24 PM

3 UFO's are on my list - a raggedy bricks lap quilt with homespuns on one side and regular cottons on reverse (will get to clean out alot of scrap batting pieces) - a queen puss-in-the-corner in pinks/browns with blocks set on point (a keeper for me) - and a quilt of valor (was given 6 star blocks to motivate me).

Camping Angel 12-22-2011 06:38 PM

The plan: First make a simple wall hanging for February. Then I have the fabric and pattern chosen to make my 7 yr old. a small quilt. I think it will be simple. I want to have it quilted at LQS. Have never done that before. Seems like a lot of my plans don't pan out too well, tho.

Xstitshmom 12-22-2011 07:36 PM

Finish my last UFO -- then a valentine table runner and a baby quilt for a friend due in March

decky 12-22-2011 07:37 PM

I have all my Christmas items done, right now I'm working on a wallhanging for my mother-in-laws birthday. She will be 95 on New Year's eve day and just went into the nursing home. Her room needs something to brighten it up.

raptureready 12-22-2011 08:38 PM

I REALLY want to do a Bella Bella mosaic quilt this year. But I've wanted to make one for the last two years so......
Anyway, this year I want to teach my daughter to sew and I want to make a fractured quilt.

DonnaB 12-22-2011 08:53 PM

I've just started a real scrappy lap quilt, of course, I have about 10 other UFO's I should really finish up.

Scissor Queen 12-22-2011 08:53 PM

The first thing I need to do is design something for the workshop I'm teaching at the beginning of February. It's still in the "I wonder what I'll do" stage. LOL

Then I have a baby quilt to get done.

Bonnie P 12-22-2011 10:05 PM

Love the designs. I hope to finally get to my winter Bow Tuck bag. Gorgeous farics but the holidays interrupted my sewing for ME,LOL

janedee 12-22-2011 10:39 PM

I won't be starting anything new until April which is after my trip to see my DD in Australia and leading up to that will be finishing off my sisters 60th birthday pressie a king size applique which I am hand quilting at the moment - BUT fabric all lined up to start a Bella Bella quilt

annesthreads 12-22-2011 11:45 PM

The struggle against the UFOs will continue - did a one-a-month challenge this year, finished 4, started two new projects! The first thing I MUST do is finish the quilt top I'm making for my Mum which has become a misery to do - desperate to finish it. At a block a day, including Christmas Day, that'll be 2nd Jan (not that I'm counting or anything..!). There's a baby quilt to make for a friend who's expecting in April - am waiting to see if she will/can tell me what sex the baby is before I plan that - I already have fabric and a plan for one for a boy. AND I'm wondering whether to do a BOM which teaches different applique techniques, as up till now I've avoided it after a traumatic encounter in my early days of quilting! But not sure if that would take so much time that the UFOs would be neglected again. It's a good job I retired last year - I certainly wouldn't have time to go to work!

lorraine43 12-22-2011 11:46 PM

I want to make more quilts for kids and finish quilting a quilt for my DD. I have to piece two thimbleberries quilts and finish them. I'm 68 and feel like I should hurry!!!!

redmadder 12-23-2011 03:15 AM

A scrappy Courthouse Steps. Not just one, several, until the scraps are gone. Will think about Dear Jane. Maybe this is the year. Short list of UFOs.

mltquilt 12-23-2011 03:38 AM

I am going to start working on UFOs, both started ones and the kits I bought but never got around to doing. I thought I would get so much done when I retired, but time just sort of disappears.

Thank G-d I had nobody to make quilts for Christmas.. The kids got quilts when they left for college.. I am making matching crumb quilts for my staff, and me.. I'm talking of 225 6.5" squares.. The squares are done.. I have to have a party, and have them choose which squares they want, and then start putting them together..
Merry Christmas Krystyna...
Barri

Krystyna 12-23-2011 04:09 AM

Hey, Barri. Hope to hook up with you at a sale in the near future!

Retired..No Job...No Classes to teach...Live alone..soooooo.....Sew whenever I want, for as long as I want. I plan on being in my sewing room everyday!

GingerK 12-23-2011 05:24 AM

I have a baby panel, which turned out to be waaaay more work than I estimated--there are 150 tiny stars that I am hand stitching with my arthritic paws) that is half quilted, then a simple 9 patch baby quilt. Both are for orders. I have to decide on final colour placement and cut the blocks for a triple Irish chain (April quilt retreat project), a denim quilt for a grad present (thinking rag with red plaid backing) several UFO's that keep giving me dirty looks, three kits--all of them difficult but oh so pretty.....and the list goes on!

Me too! I retired last February, and this year haven't done as much sewing as I'd have liked - next year I'm not going to let other things get in the way so much.
