keep going it,regardless of wether you like it or not?

I used to, back when quilting was new to me.Then realized there are
certain colors/patterns I just can't stand working on.
Now I always do a sample block.Is it worth making enough for a quilt?
Does the color need changing? Better to stop than to force myself to
make an un-loved quilt. Besides....un used fabric builds stash & I get a collection of "no way" blocks. :-D

I usually don't realize I really don't like it until the top is almost done. I must think I will like it better if it gets all the way completed. I have numerous WIPs and UFOs where blocks are made and it just got put aside but I have every intention of finishing them someday. I have one top that I got all the way done except for the final border and I think it is the ugliest thing ever. But I think I will put the border on it and finish it on the longarm as it will be a good practice piece. Then I can donate it. One woman's ugly as sin can be another's thing of beauty.

Sometimes I'll cut the blocks into strips or pieces to go into a Mile a Minute or Crumbs quilt

It joines the rest of my UFO's.......

It might take me awhile, but I finish them. And then donate them.

I'm w/you hulahoop1. I finish & then donate. But rarely do I not like a quilt. Even if it's not looking too great - IMO - once it's quilted I almost always fall in love w/it again! Quilting always works miracles!

I make a block first also.
If I don't like it I still have the 1 block.
I use them in sampler quilts or for hot pads etc.

I usually stop for awhile. I've only started one project that I hated enough not to finish. Sometimes they need a change to make it likeable again. I have one that I put aside about a year ago. It was a kit and looks too blah to me. I think I might applique on it to spruce it up. Someday. I'm not too anxious to get back to it.

I put it away for a while. Than when I bring it back out I may have new ideas of how to make it one I can love.

When I started quilting, I made a promise to myself that I would not start a new project until I finished the one I was working on. I just know I would get too overwhelmed if I let too much get going at once.

If I don't like the way it is turning out, I tear it up and adjust it until I do like it. Sometimes it causes some waste, but I don't want to spend time on something that I don't like

Try it eventually finish them all, have been known to rip out a wrong color part of the way thru, to add something that I like better. :)
Some take a long time....

Buying the whole kit with fabric included kinda saves me from that problem, but i do indeed have some small stuff that will never be finished.

I find it difficult, if not impossible, to continue working on something I don't like, so I stop after a block or two. I figure it's better to have 1 or 2 odd blocks than a UFO that'll likely never be completed. :)

(Yep, I've got quite a few odd blocks sitting around! :lol: Maybe I'll turn them into a scrappy quilt sometime.)

I also make a block first with the fabric I am thinking of using. If I dont't like it it goes in to my block stash for a quilt I will make using all of the blocks I didn't like, maybe a dog quilt or bird cage cover!!!

If I decide I don't like the project after a block or two, I set it aside to see if I may want to change something about it. If I really don't like it, I just finish the top, quilt it, and donate it. I know someone will get good use of it! :)

I stick it in a zip loc bag and go back to it later.

I once made a quilt that each block was really nice BUT when I started putting it together I could not stand the look BUT again I kept going thinking it would somehow get better lookin when done. WRONG I could hardly stand to work on it . I made it for my Stepdaughter I gave it to her anyway and guess what she loves it because it is BLUE. The pattern or construction made no differenc to her all she cared about was it was BLUE. She shows it to every one that visits and I cringe. I always hope she will not tell them who made it.

I used to work on one quilt at a time. Then I worked on two at a time. Now I've lost count how many I'm working on. I've given up on a quilt once; otherwise, except for WIP's, I have no UFO's. I finish everything I work on unless it just isn't going together. (That was the one I gave up on.)

I'll change it as I go ecept for consignment quilts if that is how they want it. that is one of the reasons I do not take all consignment jobs. Quilting should be fun and once it is not why would I do it?

I try out one block first. Like for a recent graduation quilt, I made my main blocks in 4 different fabric combinations until I decided on one I liked. Life's too short to spend all that time working on something that doesn't make you happy.

But once I make that decision, I have followed thru to the end. So far, no unfinished tops (But, I've only been at it for a year!)

I will finish it regardless of how I feel about it as when I quilt it it brings it to life and sometimes I end up liking what I formally didn't like.

I just made three blocks and i told my DH that there is no way i am making more! They are the ugliest things i have ever seen. haha I hid them in the back room were hopefully they will get lost never to be seen again. Tried again with different colors and i am almost done with the top.Much better.

I still have a shaded 9P that I've not finished-it's been boxed for years. I also sewed together a 9P, hated it-ended up one toned so I ripped out seams here and there added new squares and for 2 different throws to repurpose the blocks.

I usually keep on going ... but the quilt might be smaller than planned ... and I donate it to my guild's charity quilts.

I really try to visualize it for a long time before I start. If it bothers me visually then I won't start it. I don't think I ever really gave up on a quilt. I would just put it away for a while and sometimes a long while then I would try it again.

I always make a sample block. If I do not like it "as is", I change the colors, or go to another project. I have found, to my dismay, that if I don't like the first block, then I don't like the whole quilt, once it's done. Fortunately for me, I can easily get rid of a handmade quilt, not matter what it looks like when it's done

Here's a couple explanations, but there are others. Some make blocks on
a foundation, others make bigger blocks.I have "sample" blocks...all in diff fabrics.
Gonna decide on a size & cut them up...add some strips here & there,along with any scrappy pieces I've saved.Might do ithis as a quilt as you go.It's a way of using all your scraps...for yourself or to give away.

Um, this happens frequently sometimes, but I just get right back on the horse. I think it's the quilter and not the quilt...on my part, lol! :lol:

I haven't run across that problem, I guess because I don't buy fabric I don't like. I have to make more than one block to I can see what putting them together does to the pattern and colors. I usually like them. I'm a little anal when I go buy fabric - it's usually for a specific pattern and I don't buy fabric just because I think it's pretty - LOL. At least I admit it.

Look at it and figure out why you don't like the block. Could be that a color change is all it needs to jazz it up. Give it sparkle. Cut enough for 4 blocks and make them up. Then decide if you don't like the block, or don't like a fabric choice. You can always make a runner out of it and give it as a gift. If it is really nice, give it to a friend or relative and if it is really ugly, give it anonymously to someone you don't like. HeeHee!

If I kept going, I wouldn't have UFOs and I HAVE UFOs. My plan is to finish them eventually, but there is always a new pattern or a new idea....

I have found that once quilted the whole quilt changes. Some I have not particularly liked while making I have persevered with and have always enjoyed the finished quilt.
Saying that I do have some UFOs. Truth time - a lot of UFOs that I need to complete. Hopefully they too will "come alive" when quilted.
