Hi , glad to hear you are organized and only do one project at a time. I think we are a rare breed. I get teased at sewing because I try to finish one project before starting another. If I do not finish one before I move on, I forget what I am doing
and some times I use the fabric for another project, ( not too smart) : I think it is OK to do things the best for you. I seem to get more projects done this way. |
Several at once and they are generally big ones. I wish I could just do one and get it done but I get bored about 1/2 way through and want to switch it up. So I have a binding to do on one, a border to do on another and the back to put on another and then bind it. I am going to get started on the Farmers wife in a couple of weeks.... better get going...lots of sewing to do.
One project at a time for me, I can't stand the clutter either.
I often get bored working on just one project at a time but I use the next project on my to do list as an incentive to get my current project done. Plus since I am still fairly new to quilting I also remind myself that "practicing" by finishing this one will help me make the next one even better. LOL

I like to finish one completely
before starting another. |
I have to have several projects on the go, I'm the same with library books, I usually have about three on the go at once.
For the past couple years I would start something then set it aside. I continued to work on my main project "Finally finished" after 2-1/2 years. I decided this year to finish everything I've started before starting another project. I'm working on my last 2 items so I'm in reach. I got to thinking about it last year & recalled a friend that showed me dozens of quilt tops that weren't completed. Told myself I didn't want to be that way, so I'm finishing everything now.

I have several projects in different stages. Two or three for hand piecing, and when I get bored, I have one or two to machine sew or to quilt, and a mini to take along during the holidays...
A too tidy room makes me nervous - I like the crative mess. 8-) |
From what I have experienced and heard from others some quilters have at least one project in the machine to be pieced, one in the development stages and one almost finished. Then if we crochet, knit, cross stitch, embroidery or do other needlework we have that going too. We are creative people with ideas flowing most of the time. I will not admit to any kind of normalcey. Ask my hubby.
I usually have about 2-3 going at a time...some are applique which take longer...so I piece some days or cut fabric just to change...in between cutting ....sewing...I am looking at other patterns and start buying fabric :P
I have several going on at a time (not always presently working on them though), I think i sometimes get bored, but if I need a baby quilt for a gift I will work on it from start to finish and only work on this. I know what you mean though regarding the feeling that there is clutter with more than one project. Oh well
I used to do just one at a time. Then I started doing two at a time. Now I do LOTS at the same time. I have a ping pong table to work on and I have four "stations" set up for my four "main" projects. Other projects cut in line sometimes though. Love the variety. I never get tired of working on any one thing, and it helps to let things sit so that I look at them a lot. Sometimes I change my mind about a fabric, for example. And if I'm anxious to finish something, I do!
I used to start one project and slog through until I completed it. With the inspiration of many of you, I now have three going at the same time. Hope this doesn't increase the number of my UFOs. The variety just feels exciting now.
I usually do one project at a time. However, since I don't have as much time to quilt as I'd like and big projects take a long time, I'm considering doing small projects along with a main project so I don't get too bored. I bought a great book on small quilt projects and can hardly wait to start!
I used to work on one at a time, but not now. I know my sewing room would be a lot neater and I would be a lot happier if I could go back to one at a time. To many gotta have fabrics.
One project at a time??? I find that hard to believe. :-)
I usually have 3 or 4 going at the same time. I usually finish mine but usually a baby shower comes up or I find a great pattern that I want to start or I find a class that I just have to go to. And it goes on and on. |
I am one that also works on several projects at once. The difference with is is that I work on a quilkt project, a cross stitch project and a crochect project all at the same time and I just alternate between them to keep from getting bored. This also helps with the creaative thought process. :)
I have more than one going too,for the same reason as some of the others stated - I get bored, or a problem has arisen on something - then I need to do something else while I think about the problem. And, some is hand work, so that is by my chair so that I can do it while I watch TV at night.
Wish I could stick with only 1 at a time - But, that isn't me - have to be doing more than 1. LOL |
Sometimes I am convinced that I have AADD! I work on several projects at a time, right now I have two pillowcases ready to stitch on my table, a baby quilt I am putting binding on, in process off cutting up t's for tshirt quilt, and cutting strips for another...and that doesn't even take into consideration the UFO's I have tucked away, probably because i got bored. I envy your ability to organize and focus! Somedays I overwhelm myself.
I will only allow myself to have 2 quilts in progress at any one time - if I had more going, I am afraid I wouldn't get them finished!
I have at least two things going on at once. I only have a 2 1/2 by 4 table to cut and sew on so I have to be very organized, I have to keep it tidy because it's in our bedroom and I feel bad if it's a mess when DH comes in for a nap or going to bed for the night. I would love to be able to leave things out so I could just pick up where if left off the day before. Well, maybe one day. It's on my wish list along with so many quilts dancing in my head.
I get bored with just one project! Then, too, when I see a pattern I want to try most often I will put aside the current project and start the 'new' one - just to see what it will look like! I have quilts started for myself, charity quilts (just got my kit from Downy on Monday - finished the kit quilt top and sewed a second one; both need to be quilted), and have taken on a project for my neighbor. UFOs abound in my house!

Do most quilters finish a project before starting another? Do most quilters have several projects going on at once? Curious to hear feedback. It doesn't matter what the "norm" is, if there even is a "norm." It only matters what works for you. |
More...sometimes if I get too overloaded, I do stop starting any more and finish most of what I have, or at least get it to a more manageable level.
Right now I: (1) am basting one quilt before handquilting it, 2)have 8 large blocks ready to "quilt as you go" as soon as I can find time to read how to do it, 3) working on a quilt-along with other cyber-quilters (making 2 quilts instead of one), 4) getting ready to cut fabric for a Mystery Quilt starting in September, 5) trying to finish a top for my GS, 6) slowly compiling a notebook full of ideas and patterns..... And I have several Quilts In Waiting that I haven't even started yet, along with fabric that I have to match to patterns. |

I am sure i will get them all done someday and if not, that is ok too.

My Mom and I kid about this all of the time. She has only one project at a time (but buys three or four ahead of time!). I have at least 3 to 5 going at one time. I can NOT buy material for a project, come home with it, and not atleast cut part of it out (I've got to get my fix?!?!). I also modify patterns and ideas as I am working on a project which causes me to have to make a visit to the store while she is strictly by the book. I also make clothes for my kids so those are more projects going at the same time, too.
When I first started quilting 5 yrs ago I vowed that I would finish a project before starting another. That last for a short time because I wanted to take as many classes as I could to learn and those would become ufo's. I've mostly finished those up. Now I find that I get to the point of needing to add borders and then I move onto another project. If I'm making something to give away I work until I finish, but when it's just for me I have a hard time finishing.
My log cabin "Quilt in a Day" top was finished in a day but the rest took 10years to complete. In the mean time I made 125 wall hangings 62 quilt tops- 20 completed quilted quilts and "sew" many more things to mention so I do work on lots of projects all at once-every chair in the house has something going especially before the holidays. I dream of all the UFO's magically completing theirselves only problem is all my friends leave their projects on my doorstep in the middle of the night and I can't turn an orpaned project away! I usually have at least two projects under active construction and one in planning process. I am fine until it is time to finish the binding and then everything proceeds at a snail's pace.:(
I am a scrapbooker and learned the hard way that having 900 UFOs is not a good thing. With my quilting, I have changed my ways. I now have 3 projects going at once, and I have sworn off starting any more until these are finished. I really, really want to make a king size quilt for my own bed, so I'm holding that out as an incentive to finish up these current projects.
I am so bad that not only do I have several quilt projects going but I have two or three books going at the same time
I try to only have one at a time, but some times things happen and I end up with more. God bless. Penny

Doing more than one quilt at a time enables me when I run into
a problem on one quilt to have another to work on to satisfy my quilting urge. May be a machine quilt or a hand quilt or some other quilting project. It's great always having a quilting project. |
I have several irons in the fire and it works for me. I never finish just one project at a time either. I finish several at a time and i love the acoomplished feeling of that. I LOVE the excitement of finding a new pattern or seeeing an old pattern with a new twist and I can not wait to try it out. And folks it has been said "Normal is just a setting on your washing machine"!!!
Always have about a dozen projects going at once. My sewing room is uncontrolled chaos but it works for me. Piles of fabric everywhere, patterns here and there, stuff on the cutting mat for the next project. Love it! Love it! Love it!
We all seem to set our own norms, don't we?
Always have several projects on the go.
You should not worry about what others do in quilting or otherwise. Believe me, most of us would love to be more like you! I am a seamstress from years gone by and always have had more than one project going at a time...mostly due to too much happening in my life. But you are fortunate to be so focused and directed to be able to accomplish one important project at time.
Anything we do in life is a gift...something to grow with and to learn from. Whether for ourselves or being made for someone else, it is a really valuable process for us to appreciate and enjoy. So hang on to that thought and enjoy every moment and project. |
