I can only work on one project at a time. And find it hard to start a project if its necessary before finishing up a project.
If I have to start something new for a gift, I try to make notes so when I return to my main project I know where I left off.
I like a neat sewing room and if I have a couple projects going on at the same time I fel like I'm working in clutter.
After reading posts on this board it sounds as though many quiters work on several projects at a time. Is this the norm?
Do most quilters finish a project before starting another?
Do most quilters have several projects going on at once?
Curious to hear feedback.

thequilterslink 07-21-2010 07:46 AM

I have lots and lots of projects going at once, some i get bored with and need to do something else for a while, some are set aside as i need to make a gift, some i just got sick of doing, some i am doing with a friend and we cant' always work out a time that is good for both of us. I am sure i will get them all done someday and if not, that is ok too.

cjtinkle 07-21-2010 07:48 AM

I can't do one project at a time, I need the "thrill of the chase"... to keep me motivated... always chasing down that next project!

charismah 07-21-2010 07:50 AM

I am one of those people that has a few going at once...but I am also one that finishes alot....so I am never concerned about it...usually I have more than one project becuase some are more detailed than others and I will get bored with tedious work ..so I have to have a side project to work on while resting on the other.

Katrine 07-21-2010 08:02 AM

I have 3 or 4 on the go usually alternating between easy/difficult and small/large - like Charismah, it's good to be able to spend a bit of time on something different.

lyndad 07-21-2010 08:03 AM

My sewing room is a separate building outside, so I do all my quilting in there, but in the house, I keep my handwork by my chair, embroidery etc. So I do keep several projects going at a time

leaha 07-21-2010 08:03 AM

I have several peojects going at the same time, but only have the one I am working on right now out, the rest are in storage box's and out of sight for now. I can not work in messy room.

cjomomma 07-21-2010 08:15 AM

I have tried to work on one project at a time but it hasn't worked out. I generally have the one I'm working on and cutting blocks for others. I love cutting my fabric's.

Jim's Gem 07-21-2010 08:15 AM

I will have several projects going at one time. The lastest has been 5 projects. I just finished 3 of them and have fabrics for 3 more sitting on my cutting table.

If you can only work on one project at a time, then only work on one project at a time.

It doesn't matter what the "norm" is, if there even is a
"norm." It only matters what works for you.

sewgull 07-21-2010 08:25 AM

Always have several projects going at one time. I woud be totally confused if I only cound work on one thing at a time.
My husband tells me finish before hyour start something else. Works for him not for me. Have a wonderful day.

Quilter7x 07-21-2010 08:27 AM

I feel it is the norm for a quilter to have many projects in the making at one time. I don't even want to count how many I have right now!

CarrieAnne 07-21-2010 08:27 AM

I always have a few things going at once!

Miss Purple Shoes 07-21-2010 08:40 AM

I have lots of porojects on the go at the same time. I like variety. Often I finish quite a few close to each other. Boy that feels good!

mlaceruby 07-21-2010 08:42 AM

Several going at one time!
honestly quilting and clutter come hand in hand!
but I know where everything is!.... well mostly! LOL

jenna p in ga 07-21-2010 08:44 AM

Unfortunately I am a starter!!! Always have several projects going at once. I would guess that a lot of quiters do this...just ask for a UFO count, lol. I would like to be one of those that completes a project before going on...think I would actually get more done that way, but alas, I just start, start, start...and eventually finish, lol.

mosher92 07-21-2010 08:48 AM

Getting a project done before starting another? Now that is unheard of. I think I suffer from completion anxioty. Not only on my quilting but scrapbooking, knitting, the house, knitting. you name it and I have it in some form of completed. Yes I do get some projects done but I hate to think of how many of them I have in the works. I tried to take part in the UFO project here in the board but fell short the second month as I had to many other things that were screaming for my attention.

Congrats to you for your method and I do hope you can keep it up. Maybe I should take lessons.

sueisallaboutquilts 07-21-2010 08:57 AM

Completion anxiety is a funny one!!! :D
I agree with Scissor Queen.
I'm also one who has several going on at once. Seems I'm like that about a lot of things. Not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing!!
Bottom line- do what makes YOU happy!! :D
HUGS

littlehud 07-21-2010 09:02 AM

I have lots of projects going at one time. When I started I would finish one project before starting another. No UFO. I don't know when I started but I have lots of WIP now.

ckcowl 07-21-2010 09:03 AM

i try hard to keep it down to less than 100 at a time :)
everywhere you look in my world you see another project in some stage of completion...and lots more hiding from view. i can grab anything i'm in the mood for to work on
sometimes this is a very bad thing...i wish i could make one thing at a time...that would drive me crazy though...no matter what i'm doing (not just quilting) i am multitasking...you know, paying bills, fixing dinner, putting away, getting out...all at once....i usually have 2 or 3 sitting on cutting table, ironing board, sewing table at one time...and yes, sometimes things get mixed up :(

Tcharlie 07-21-2010 09:22 AM

Gee, I can not do one project at a time......I have SEVERAL going all at once!

amma 07-21-2010 09:23 AM

Whatever works best for you :D This is supposed to be a fun, relaxing and enjoyable hobby

I always have several projects going at a time... or at the very least a bunch of practice blocks of various techniques :D:D:D

LoisN 07-21-2010 09:30 AM

I really LIKE to complete one before starting another, but have 5 in the works right now. I'm going to finish #5 and then backtrack to the other 4. The other 4 are quilt tops that need to be sandwiched and quilted. Sandwiching is a job that I don't like, so I procrastinate.

quiltilicious 07-21-2010 09:34 AM

I seem to piece one project at a time, but I'll have several tops in the quilting queue. I have OTHER projects (knitting, art, etc) going on at the same time as a quilting project - does that count?

Bluelady 07-21-2010 09:57 AM

I usually have several projects going at one time, not counting the ones in my head! If I counted those.. well, I would have 50 or more going! And be buried in fabric.
So, 3 to 5 projects keeps me from getting bored and they all move along.

Oh, Lord! we better NOT be counting projects in the head or just "on paper" - I probably have more than I'll manage to get done in my lifetime.

Rosyhf 07-21-2010 10:05 AM

Sometimes I work on one project until it is finished. Sometimes I have to take a break from an intense project and work on something with less brain work and that could be two project besides the one already started.

Sometimes I will put a project on hold for a year lol and get back to it and finish it...it all depends what I feel up to that day or that moment.

I find that some projects keep me excited that I must finish it first and so on.....

Kieta 07-21-2010 10:05 AM

i'm too ADHD to have just one project at a time. however, i do actually force myself to finish projects within a set time frame. i try for 3 months from start to finish, not counting the time it's spinning in my head with colors & patterns. currently i have 3 projects going and a few in planning stages.

C.Cal Quilt Girl 07-21-2010 10:06 AM

Isn't multi-tasking suppose to be a good thing ???? :)

franie 07-21-2010 10:07 AM

I work on lots of projects and have lots of UFOs. I also work on customer's quilts on the long arm. Don't know the norm but I have never been normal.

sidmona 07-21-2010 10:13 AM

I usually piece only one at a time but I do have about 9 finished tops that need to be quilted.

This is good ...hahahahah

grammyp 07-21-2010 10:30 AM

It depends on the project for me. I have 2 that travel with me (redwork, and apple core quilt) and they will get done ... eventually. At home I like to finish a project before starting another, unless they are related.

pab58 07-21-2010 01:12 PM

Definitely more than one project at a time!

tcnmom 07-21-2010 02:43 PM

I have several things going at the same time. When my sewing room is such a mess, I tell myself that I'm going to finish all the WIP and then only do one thing at a time. Well I've been saying that for a few years and still hasn't happened.

maryb119 07-21-2010 02:46 PM

mom-6 07-21-2010 02:52 PM

My daughter says 'normal' is a setting on the washing machine, not a description of people!

And yes, I do have several in various stages of completion going at any given time.

Yup- it all counts haha :D

seamstome 07-21-2010 04:13 PM

It freaks me out when I have too many things going at once. Right now is one of those times. I have 7 quilts in various stages and that is about 5 too many.

I can have them in line but not started and that doesnt stress me out. But once I start them I need to finish them.

Im in this pickle because I messed one up really badly and had to stop to re-group, one is a BOM, two (identical for gifts) are slightly short of fabric (going shopping this weekend and that will be resolved), one I lost interest in (BORING), one just got pushed aside.

I dont know how you all keep all these things going at once. A talent I must not have.

I know... If I had multiple quilts cut out in my sewing room at the same time iI would wind up mixing up the fabrics somehow - I just know it! I'm not that organized :)
