has anybody read the latest newsletter from Konstantin? where he (she? somebody help me. i am soooooooooo embarrassed i don't know the answer to that question!)

anyway ... where the topic is how much fabric to buy?

i've been wondering why i use the "system" i do when i hit the stores, and now i know. i am channeling Konstantin! mystery solved.

what a relief to know there is somebody else out there who will brave the stares of the folks waiting behind me in line while the poor sales people are measuring out yard after yard after yard to calculate the damages to my wallet.

Norah 03-29-2007 06:04 PM

I musta missed it? Did it come out today? Maybe I didn't read it all like I thought I did. I buy either all I can afford, or all I can carry, or all I can get away with, depending on the day.

patricej 03-30-2007 02:14 AM

well, there's another mystery solved. we have all been wondering who's been breaking into the fabric shops at night to make off with all the good stuff!

pssssssst!!! your secret is safe with us.

vicki reno 03-30-2007 04:17 AM

If its in todays, mine hasn't come in yet. I'll let you know when I ead it.

That what you lookin fur?

patricej 03-30-2007 05:12 AM

that isn't the one. the one i got starts off talking about deciding how much fabric to buy. i was laughing all the way through because K uses almost exactly the same "system" I use. it was downright wierd.

i wonder if it's a bit scary to know there might be another mind on the loose out there that works even a little like mine does. we could be in biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig trouble. LOL

zyxquilts 03-30-2007 07:02 AM

Do you have a link to that one? The last one I got was about using non-quilting tools for quilting...this fabric one sounds too good to miss! You DO give the best 'reviews' Patrice! lol
sue

patricej 03-30-2007 07:04 AM

i'll have to post the link when i get home. i don't have it here.

thank you.
:-)

kathy 03-30-2007 07:09 AM

weird. the last one i got 3/28 was about quilting and turning quilts

Moonpi 03-30-2007 07:29 AM

The one I got was about cutting half square triangles....

Norah 03-30-2007 07:55 AM

Is there a way to see the archives for the Quilted Paradise newsletters? I can't seem to find one.

kathy 03-30-2007 08:00 AM

Norah, I went to my old mail and sorted it to pull up only quilted paridse
I looked at the first few and didn'y find it.
I think maybe she's(patrice) dreaming. but don't tell her I said that!

patricej 03-30-2007 08:07 AM

not dreams. sleep deprivation.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

and cheap drugs. shoulda scored from the guy on the other corner.

You might see different "last" issues of the newsletter depending on your internet service provider and the place in the list.

About a year ago, I noticed that a lot of e-mail is not being delivered. Because of all the spam out there, legitimate newsletters also get trapped in spam filters or simply get discarded by the internet service providers.

This gets especially bad if you send a lot of messages in a short period of time containing identical link to the same web page.

If a large e-mail provider (like Yahoo or AOL) receives 100 (or so) identical e-mail messages in a day, they would stop accepting any more e-mail from that source. So any subscriber after that gets cut off and doesn't receive an issue at all.

As a result, I started spreading the delivery of each new issue over about one week interval, so there are no peaks and e-mail doesn't get blocked.

On top of that, I started shuffling the issues so that they don't all contain the same exact link to one page. So this week, someone might receive an issue that you'll get next week, and at the same time, they'll get your issue next week. And if you signed up recently, you might even get an issue from two months back if there are a lot of other subscribers in the list using your service provider. As long as an issue is not marked as time-sensitive, it might get shuffled around a bit.

It's pretty complicated and took me a while to figure out how to do that without getting confused about who received what, but it turned out to be working pretty good.

There are several attempts by large internet providers to standardise e-mail authentication so that legitimate newsletters can identify themselves and end up being delivered without problems. But until that happens, we have to keep doing some shuffling. Otherwise, most people wouldn't get the newsletter at all.

It's really a pain in the a$$ to maintain a list this way. But there is currently no way around it.

I hope that clears it up.

kathy 03-30-2007 08:35 AM

Well I'm sure glad you cleared that up, I was getting pretty confused there. (keep your comments to 10 lafs or less)

mimisharon 03-30-2007 08:51 AM

Hey Admin,
You done good! I couldn't keep the pace of that system up, I'd forget. Being nearly 59 (two weeks, say it ain't so) I forget to much to often.

I'm wondering if I could assist with the archiving of the newsletters. But then I think I'm not bright enough in this changing world of computerese. I would love to offer my assistance in typing anything you'd like, though, if you have an archive site. I'm pretty good at following directions, (with written and drawings, honest, I can read!)

Course now, my good friend Patrice is a computer guru, she could help draw up the directions and tell me how to follow them. Right, pal???

Seriously, anything I can do to help with this great group just let me know. I love most of the folks here now. It's a pleasure to be able to learn things while having fun and you know I enjoy the newsletters I email you about them.

Patrice, can you copy and send the one with the forumula for the yardages??? I bet it came to me while I was away from the puter for awhile.........dang.

Thanks all!!!

Norah 03-30-2007 08:52 AM

Man. AMNIN, I'm glad I don't have your job. It hurts my head to have to figure out complicated things. We appreciate all you do. Really. Do you have a name? And do you have an archive, or should I have been saving all of those newsletters?

Admin 03-30-2007 08:58 AM

Norah, yes my name is Konstantin :)

I had a partial archive, but because of the shuffling, an archive would become a spoiler for some people because there is a possibility of a newsletter in an archive to become the "future" issue for someone who'd signed up recently.

I'm working on a comprehensive archive now, so as soon as I figure out a way to make it all work, I'll release it.

For now, the best way is to keep adding the issues you receive to the bookmarks in your browser. That way, you can always re-visit any of the pages.

mimisharon 03-30-2007 09:07 AM

Whhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I knew I should have saved them to disk!!!

You are a wonderful person, Konstantin!! Thank you!! God will repay your kindness.

Sharon

patricej 03-30-2007 09:10 AM

am i the only one who noticed how adroitly K avoided saying whether he's a he or a she? clever duck, that Admin. i bow to the master. LOL

if i don't forget, i'll post the link when i get home today. it's been a long week here at the office, so my brain is fried, but i'll try to remember.

i think sharon had better start a To-Do list for me because i have already forgotten everything she wants me to do. make a note, also, of the other things some folks are still waiting for from me. i know i owe Debbie something (and have it written down so i do remember what it is. just haven't been able to get to it yet.) and i need to research something (not written down, but i remember what it is. just can't remember who it's for. but that's written down somewhere, too.) if i owe anybody else, i think you'd better remind me. (unless i owe you money, in which case you are out of luck. i'm going fabric shopping tomorrow. nanner, nanner, nanner)

and i am going to laugh at kathy 11 times per hours until i get my teddy bear and chocolate. make that 12 times per hour. i really need that chocolate fix.

Admin 03-30-2007 09:20 AM

LOL Patrice, I'm a he. Konstantin is a Russian male name, derivative from Greek Constantine :) I didn't think there was a mystery about it. But there you have it :)

mimisharon 03-30-2007 09:25 AM

Oh, boy, Tim is going to be thrilled!! You've been a mystery to us for weeks, you haven't been reading everything, have you? Now then, tall, dark, and handsome or tall, blue-eyed blond, do tell us what to expect in our next newsletter???

Looking forward to each and every one, no matter what is in it,
Sharon

Norah 03-30-2007 09:57 AM

Tim should be happy to know that he is not alone in his love for quilts and his tolerance (well, sort of) of women. Thank, Konstantin, for putting up with us. :-)

patricej 03-30-2007 10:29 AM

It's about time Tim had some competition around here. he's been getting spoiled by all the adoration.

maybe he'll start bringing us flowers and candy to keep up.
or baste our quilts for us. (naaaaaaaaaaah ... that's probably pushin' it.)

Carla P 03-30-2007 10:45 AM

Patrice Dear, did you not get the newsletter in which he showed in a video clip the proper way to make a quilters knot? Nannnner nannner nannner
I knew he was a man!!!!! & Patrice didn't!!!

Now, brag about fabric shopping again!!! IF YOU DARE!!

patricej 03-30-2007 10:58 AM

i don't remember that, but probably wouldn't have watched it anyway. i probably don't really, but would most likely have assumed i already knew how to tie a knot. LOL

i shall buy yards and yards and yards and yards.

HAH!!!

did you do the quilting in your avatar? cuz it's pwiddy.

Carla P 03-30-2007 11:04 AM

Thank you Dear!!! Yes, I did.

You're good at sucking up!! I guess I won't begrudge you buying a little fabric... if you want to...

vicki reno 03-30-2007 12:17 PM

Hey Patrice if you have all that moola for fabric how about I PM you my wish list :!:

patricej 03-30-2007 12:53 PM

well, my dear, you are welcome to PM as long a list as you like. but ... ummm ... don't hold yer breath waiting for me to share.

and don't envy me yet. i said i was going shopping. i don't expect to do much buying. I need something very specific, so am not likely to find it. the store i'm going to (as if i had any choice any more. grrrrrrrrrr. but, i digress) has lots and lots of fabric. and usually a lot i like. but none that really calls out to me. know what i mean? it's all stuff i'm content to leave there and just look at next time through.

doesn't it seem, also, that when you shop for fabric with something very specific in mind, you can never find it? and nothing else - no how much better it might be in reality - ever seems good enough to use instead?

i think i'm still too "depressed" about loosing the place i like best to give any other place a fair chance. resentment clouds the judgement and changes the colors of everything around you. i'll know i'm over it the first time i walk out of this place straining under the weight of my purchase. considering that, this whole being "depressed" thing might just be You-Know-Who's way of leaving enough money to get some of the other things i want, too, instead of ONLY buying fabric.
nothing important, really. silly stuff like food, gas, mortgage payment. you know ... the nonsense. LOL

First off, I knew Konstantin was a man's name.
Second, think Ricky Tims, that man can quilt circles around most women I have met.
Third, the quilt shop I most frequent is... "Eddie's", he's mah hero. He has a collection of about 700 Hand made Hawaiian shirts and hangs quilts of people who shop at his store (and are good at quilting) in his shop. Knows more about sewing machines than most people alive. He hires great people (and cute), all of whom know my name.

Who's gonna baste my quilts for me? What do you think is holding up YBR? (The ground silly).

Flowers? Iris of course, and candy? Mary Janes. Ummm ummm ummm.

patricej 03-31-2007 01:03 AM

man, can you miss a point. LOL

i was right, ladies. Tim has gotten far too secure. We have spoiled him with our attention and affection. we need to start holding out for flowers and candy. or fabric. he seems to find some interesting stuff.

aaaaaaaah. on second thought .... i guess we should just keep lovin' him to pieces. it would be too much of a strain to do otherwise, don'tcha think?

P.S. the newsletter link is http://www.quiltedparadise.com/b/098/uid/41177

triciasquilts 03-31-2007 06:58 AM

Flowers eventually die, and the doc told me to lose a few lbs, so I can't eat the candy, so Tim you will have to send me the fabric!!!! Thank you so much!!!!

Tricia

Norah 03-31-2007 07:10 AM

Not to be a killjoy, but after all of the shenanigans we pull, maybe we should send Tim the fabric, and the flowers, and the candy, just so we can have a man around to flatter our egos. NOT! Although, Tim is a great quilter, has good color sense and a sense of humor. Maybe we should keep him somewhat happy.

Yvonne 03-31-2007 07:14 AM

Patrice,
Thanks for posting the newsletter address. I realized, as I read the letter, that I've been working up to buying fabric in this manner! Oh, yes. I'll be there within the year! Restraint is such an ugly word when it is applied to lovely fabrics!

Boo, as for pink blocks, too late. I'll have to be one of those pink rule breakers. What'cha got against pink? Pink is a loverly color. I have all of this beautiful pink fabric just screaming to be allowed out of the stash and into a project so I've given it it's own little project. You'll see. And, most likely, my granddaughter will love the PINK quilt when I'm finished.

Listen to this woman. She be smart. I just have to question the word 'somewhat'.

Send Tim flowers. Send Tim candy. When it comes to my fabric, I draw the line!

you are insufficiently objective to get a vote on that.

mimisharon 03-31-2007 02:56 PM

Well, for MY 2 cents, Tim has the quilt shop to end quilt shops so I would think he should find us all our own fat quarter of pink and let us work it into the April block. uhhhh, right? Tim? Ok, Patrice I tried. He's obviously not going for the flowers and candy. Although, the Iris are budding in my yard, they won't be opening for a time. You'll get the first pic Tim, IF you promise to quilt one for me....

There are advantages to living in Paradise. The "Easter" Iris bloomed a week early. The daffs have been in bloom since November. I have problems pruning the rose bushes, they never go dormant, seldom are they without flowers. I have started my cucumber plants, they are two inches tall already.

Life is tough.

I tried to get the BotM club on a subscription basis, 500 bucks to join. You would have gotten any color pink you wanted for that kinda money. *L*
