I am making these stars and can't decide whether to border each one with something or just put them all together. Any ideas?

all4quilt 07-29-2008 05:26 PM

I would go with no sashing inbetween blocks. I like the black background. It makes the stars twinkle!! Just my opinion. The blocks are BEAUTIFUL!

Thanks for the input, Susan and the compliment.

johnette 07-29-2008 05:34 PM

Thanks Loretta for your vote and the kind words. :)

Elizabeth A. 07-29-2008 05:35 PM

I too like the stars on the black just as you have them laid out. You do such beautiful work!

johnette 07-29-2008 05:36 PM

Thanks, Elizabeth.

CissyQuilts 07-29-2008 05:37 PM

Another vote for no sashing. The simple black background really makes the stars pop. You're doing a great job!

joannl 07-29-2008 05:39 PM

I really like them with the black background, they are fabulous.

I, too like them as they are. They look flourescent.

mgshaw 07-29-2008 05:56 PM

I like it without but it might be neat with black sashing that forms a star with the cornerstones. I will see if I can find a picture of what I am talking about.

This is sort of what I was talking about, but not on point just look at the sashing

That is a thing of beauty. My son walked by as was stopped in his tracks by it. Don't change a thing.

Arizona Sunrises 07-29-2008 06:01 PM

Less is more. :) No borders around the blocks.

live2teach 07-29-2008 06:02 PM

I agree with everyone and the stars do look like they are twinkling...beautiful!

signitwright 07-29-2008 06:23 PM

WOW :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: Stunning quilt. I agree with the others, no sashing. Not only do the stars pop, but they look as though they are floating in the night sky. What size is it? My bed is a king size.( hint, hint)        Pam W.

Tricia 07-29-2008 07:19 PM

If you want to float the stars you can use black sashing without corner stones.

You could also use black sashing with colored cornerstones from your scraps. I like the look of the black with out colored sashing but think the black sashing would be wonderful especially if you need the quilt to be a bit bigger and have enough black fabric.

Cathe 07-29-2008 07:24 PM

I think they would look nice with black sashing.

quiltsRfun 07-29-2008 07:25 PM

I agree with the others. My first question was: What would you border them with? I say go black.

Jim's Gem 07-29-2008 07:26 PM

Beautiful stars. I vote either no or black sashing as well.

CRH 07-29-2008 07:27 PM

Beautiful!! Your stars really shine!

bj 07-29-2008 08:50 PM

Beautiful blocks. The black really makes them pop. I agree with Cathe, if I put any kind of sashing, I would put black so you don't lose the vibrance of the stars. Can't wait to see it!

henryparrish76 07-29-2008 08:54 PM

I love just as it is lain out. :) They really pop out at you :)

gcathie 07-29-2008 09:02 PM

Oooo they are so pretty....I would say it depends on how big you want this to be......if you want it bigger....add sashing....and I would do as Tricia suggested....good luck decideing....and let us see the results... :D

CindyBee 07-30-2008 12:22 AM

I like Melissa's idea. Where the sashing forms smaller corner stars. That's just for a little extra pizazz, because they are quite beautiful just as they are without the sashing.

reneebobby 07-30-2008 02:10 AM

Very nice work I would leave as is.

Connie1948 07-30-2008 04:56 AM

Finish as is. No sashing or border. It is stunning!

Quilting Aggi 07-30-2008 05:13 AM

Hi.. wow those are amazing and dramatic sparkly stars!!! I vote for no sashing too... the black stands them out all on their own!

Stitching4Fun 07-30-2008 05:36 AM

I guess I am the oddball here. I like things to pop out and (if this were mine) I would pick a color from the design and add sashing between the blocks. Then I would do a border the same color. But that is me. I seldom make smaller quilts so all of mine are usually queen size (unless for a baby).

But I also think it looks good the way it is. My preference is sashing. Why not lay it out with fabric between the blocks and see what you like the best. You could do half of it that way and the other half laid out the way it is now and then decide.

Just remember it is your quilt and whatever you decide is the winner!!

Great looking blocks . I agree less is more!!!!

joyful_noise 07-30-2008 06:38 AM

My opinion..........no sashing needed on this one. It looks like the night sky filled with beautiful stars as is.

zyxquilts 07-30-2008 06:54 AM

Those are beautiful stars!! I vote....if you want it bigger - black sashing, if you like the size with just the blocks, no sashing! With the sashing, the stars will just float a bit more. Great job! :D

mamatobugboo 07-30-2008 07:38 AM

you could always use black sashing and then "toggle" the blocks so that they are each a little bit off center, yet your finished blocks are the same size. They might dance a little bit more that way!

Sallyjane 07-31-2008 12:55 PM

The only thing I might add would be sashings and boarder in a black fabric with little stars or random dots that would look like stars. Then your big stars would pop out of a starry sky background. Finding just the right fabric may not be easy to do.

johnette 07-31-2008 04:03 PM

Thank you, each and every one of you for the opinions and good ideas. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. I am slow, so don't give up on me! Thanks again, friends.

Belinda 08-03-2008 03:34 PM

Perfectly beautiful, as is.

sandpat 08-03-2008 03:49 PM

Its lovely just like it is, but I would go with black sashing so I could show off a beautiful varigated bright thread with the quilting. Whichever you decide, you can't go wrong...its beautiful!

NICE idea!

Cathe 08-03-2008 08:08 PM

The thing is, if you have sashings, you don't have to worry about the points of every star in every block perfectly meeting the points of the next star in the next block! It gives you a little flexibility because not all of us are perfect piecers.

Now that's my kind of thinking Cathe! lol right on :)

Ok, I told you I was slow but here it is. Still has to be quilted but I'm getting there. I ended up doing sashing because in the midst of making all the stars I changed sewing machines, did some other projects, got better at cutting and needless to say none of my stars were exactly the same size. I had to improvise.

Elisabrat 02-07-2010 06:13 AM

No sashing they look great like that. The comment that it makes them twinkle is very accurate.
