Need some help deciding on border fabric. Does the dark purple or the light purple look better?

ruthrings 10-29-2014 07:21 AM

I like the dark, personally. I often think, too, from a practical standpoint, that the border is where fingerprints and other soil accumulates, so I often take that into consideration in choosing my border.

AngeliaNR 10-29-2014 07:25 AM

I like the dark. It seems to "stop" the pattern well.

tessagin 10-29-2014 07:29 AM

Ditto what she said.

QUILTNMO 10-29-2014 07:36 AM

i would use the dark!!!

Brenda M 10-29-2014 07:39 AM

I like the dark as well

SueSew 10-29-2014 08:19 AM

I vote for the dark, and I think your color choices in the quilt are beautiful

bezzie2013 10-29-2014 09:09 AM

I like the dark also I think it gives the main part of the quilt more deapth

fxsts93kf 10-29-2014 09:18 AM

I'm going to be the lone dissenter lol. I like the light purple because I think the fabric matches the quilt better. I would probably choose dark if it was one of the darks from in the quilt. Unless it's in the quilt and I'm just not seeing it. Very pretty!!

dcquilter 10-29-2014 09:19 AM

I like the dark better. Looks like a beautiful quilt!

I have to agree with Kelly...I would go dark if it matched one of the darks in the quilt. To me, the patterned border takes away from the beautiful dark marbles in the quilt.

I agree also with the above poster who commented on fingerprints.

barny 10-29-2014 11:30 AM

I think dark. I love your quilt too. But the dark is the prettiest, in my opinion.

quiltsRfun 10-29-2014 11:42 AM

Go to the dark side. LOL

Boston1954 10-29-2014 12:22 PM

Definitely the dark. It frames it up very nicely. It sure is pretty. I love purple and yellow together.

sewingsuz 10-29-2014 12:29 PM

I also like the dark. Looks good.

isewman 10-29-2014 12:33 PM

I go with everyone else. I like the dark purple also. To me the light puple just doesnt bring the colors of your quilt out.

Jeanne S 10-29-2014 12:35 PM

Another vote for the dark here.

Cedar 10-29-2014 01:20 PM

Typically I'm in favor of dark and lots of pattern and not a huge pastel person, but in this case I think the lavender is WAY better.

-- The lavender really goes well with the creams and is a nice transitory note between them and the darker purples in the quilt. It lets you white point and your black point be within the pieced pattern and puts the focus where it should be.

-- The flower shape in the dark fabric draws the eye away from the piecing. It is more circular than your diamond design. Typically the similar round shapes would work well together, but eyes are more drawn to circles than rectangles so instead of being a subtle shape repeat the flowers are an equal draw for attention, even though your mind knows the big pieced diamond should be the star. This makes the border look eye catching, but also makes me miss the subtle details in the pieced fabrics.

I, too, find the flowers in the dark border fabric distracting. I think they compete a little too much for attention with the interior of the quilt. I do think the darker border shows off the quilt colors to better advantage than the lighter border; it's the regimental flowers I have a problem with.

Jackie Spencer 10-29-2014 02:12 PM

I like the dark, and it has a lighter Lavender in it, that helps to tie it all together!!

Sandra in Minnesota 10-29-2014 02:16 PM

Dark also. It's a great looking quilt!

craftypete 10-29-2014 02:23 PM

I like the dark

ManiacQuilter2 10-29-2014 02:25 PM

I like a darker border too but not the one you have in the photo. It is just too busy of a print. I would have preferred the darkest tonal in your quilt for the border.

soccertxi 10-29-2014 02:44 PM

I think the dark frames it better. JMHO

Mundy 10-29-2014 02:53 PM

my self I would prefer the light one

I'm with you on this one. I really prefer the lighter one for the same reasons, or would go with a darker one if it was one of the same darker pieces used. Either way, it's Very pretty.

7darlings 10-29-2014 07:34 PM

I like the dark print. I think it really brings out the great colors you have in the quilt. Very pretty.

bljackson58 10-30-2014 03:47 AM

It's a beautiful quilt. I liked the lighter fabric better of the two choices. If the majority says the darker is better, I would look for another fabric. I don't feel like it is the best match.

gjc2001 10-30-2014 03:56 AM

I would go with the darker fabric but in a different print for the same reasons as others have given. You don't want to take anything away from your beautiful quilt.

GailG 10-30-2014 04:45 AM

I like the dark. In art class many moons ago, I learned that if we "darken the corners" it helps to bring the viewer into the painting. So I try to practice the same with quilts. This is just my own opinion and don't really know if it applies, but it's what I try to do.

Cheryl7758 10-30-2014 04:49 AM

I would like a dark versus the light, but not the dark you have in the photo - would go with something similar to the other fabrics in the body of the quilt. If I only had the 2 choices presented I would go with the light.

Roberta 10-30-2014 04:56 AM

Dark here.

roadrunr 10-30-2014 05:08 AM

I also like the light purple better, but it's hard to tell because of the picture. If I could see the quilt better, it would be easier to say which is better.

A dark color would also be good, but a different one than the one you are showing.

Geri B 10-30-2014 05:12 AM

I would do a narrow band ( dark purple) around first, the size of your strips, then maybe the lite solid you have or some other choice.....that dark purple print is not good......get a tonal not a print......it distracts from the focal point!

shayarene 10-30-2014 06:00 AM

Beautiful quilt, I am new yet, but I like the Dark also.

Judi 10-30-2014 09:40 AM

I like light fabric. It makes your center pattern area "pop".

Lynne 10-30-2014 10:08 AM

Dark looks best to me.

Lynne

MargeD 10-30-2014 11:10 AM

Personally, I like the darker border as it frames the quilt so the quilt stands out. That's going to be a beautiful quilt.

Bearpawquilter 10-30-2014 11:38 AM

Personally I like the dark better but I think the print detracts from the pattern of the quilt. The same depth of color with a fabric that reads more as a solid would be better. However, who says you need a border? The quilt police? How does the pattern look without a border? I mostly make quilts without borders now. Just my preference. N
