So I've only made a few quilts and of the ones I've made the piecing has been relatively simple. I decided to try my hand at a quilt from Judy Martin called Mariner's Star. I've just finished the center and I want to get some eyes on it of people who know what they are doing. I don't want to continue to far if it isn't right. I think it is but if you all could just let me know if there are any major issues which I need to fix (I know pictures aren't perfect) that would be great.
Thanks,
Yael

I have not made one of these, but it looks good to me.

Looks like you are doing a beautiful job. Your color choices are really nice.

I just LOVE Judy Martin! Her books give you SO much information! I love your color and your piecing looks spot on. Keep in mind you need a good 1/4 past your points so they dont' get swallowed up in the next seam. They look good from here...

I see one major issue...............it's in Colorado and it needs to be here with me!!! I would love it to death, I promise! One of my favorite patterns and my favorite color...and the workmanship is beautiful! Can't wait to see it when it's finished....:)

michelleoc 03-19-2013 04:34 PM

Really beautiful work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

quiltstringz 03-20-2013 09:36 AM

It looks wonderful - kuddos to you for not being a chicken (like me) and just going for it.

MadQuilter 03-20-2013 09:57 AM

It looks great. It's hard to see if the points at the 9 o' clock and 11 o' clock positions have the full 1/4" seam allowance.

ghquilter53 03-21-2013 03:23 AM

Love Judy Martin quilts and have made a couple. Your block looks wonderful.

Sarah in Brooklyn 03-21-2013 03:25 AM

mamab113 03-21-2013 04:02 AM

I can't wait to see the finished product! I love your color choices and the mariners star, but I'm afraid to attempt it! :o

Barb_MO 03-21-2013 04:14 AM

I see some points that looks like they go almost to the edge of the circle, but it is hard to tell how much allowance is letf beyond the point. I would say for first atempt this is a very good start, but I have never made one of these so don't know if that will through off the next round. You have done a good jpb of picking and place the fabrics.

Lara122 03-21-2013 04:25 AM

looks lovely! how long did that take you?! =)) (beginner, my eye!!)

sewnsewer2 03-21-2013 04:34 AM

I haven't made one either but love yours!

quilterpurpledog 03-21-2013 04:41 AM

This is a really lovely piece. I have done a couple of these blocks and know the challenges-many people paper piece them to avoid some of the precision of handling all the pieces. The biggest challenge, I think, is fitting the circle onto the compass. Perhaps Elmer's school glue would be a good way to go.

MadP 03-21-2013 04:58 AM

I haven't done this but it looks like you are doing a great job to me.

quiltmom04 03-21-2013 05:12 AM

Looks good to me, too. You could add a brighter color where those little points are, but the one you have is lovely. Your work looks good, too!

matraina 03-21-2013 05:24 AM

It is gorgeous! Hard to believe you're so new at it!!!

kydeb 03-21-2013 06:13 AM

That's beautiful!!

solstice3 03-21-2013 06:27 AM

it looks great to me and I love the color combo

Carol34446 03-21-2013 06:57 AM

Wonderful job, keep up the good work.

JoanneS 03-21-2013 07:16 AM

It looks great! All those points look perfect to me. Are you paper piecing?

I think you did super. Your points are in line from small star in middle to outside points. Beautiful work and love your color choices.

jcrow 03-21-2013 07:26 AM

I've done New York Beauties, but I don't know if they are done the same way as yours. Your block is BEAUTIFUL!!! I think pride in workmanship shows through in your block!!! Very nice work!!

grannyp70 03-21-2013 07:43 AM

Your center looks great, I haven't made one of these yet but its on my to do list. Love your colors, they are just beautiful. Keep going and please share with us as you go along. Great job. HUGS

yweinst 03-21-2013 07:46 AM

I have found that the star points were the hardest with making a curved seam. I redid the seam about 10 times and am still a little nervous that it isn't perfect. I'm kind of anal. Does anyone have suggestion how to perfect a round seam? I've looked on line and watched youtube videos but I still need to work on it. Also I tried to use elmer's glue but it still wasn't working out right.

As for how long it took me to make the first block it took me the weekend but I wasn't working on it constantly.

Yesterday I started on the next block and by the end I nailed the lining up of my seams. I was really excited!!!

Thank you everyone for your input.

sewbizgirl 03-21-2013 08:07 AM

It looks STUNNING to me. Just be careful not to clip your points off in whatever you seam it to at the outside edge. Just beautiful, so far....

collady 03-21-2013 08:59 AM

I don't know how many quilts you have made, but that looks very well made and shows great sewing skills. I really like the way it looks.
