i started to make a lone star without a pattern (crazy i know) ive never made one befor and for some reason i had it in my head that i needed to cut the strips at a 60 degree angle. so now i have a six pointed star insted off an 8 pionted star so my question is what is my star called is it still a lone star? and how do i make the setting triangles now since i cant use 90 degree triangles and sqares? please help
this is what it looks like |
I would probably applique the star on background material! It is beautiful!
EDIT: Since you haven't sewn the star points together yet, could you put your background material on the sides of your star points and miter them together? |
It looks like it would still work. Just sew one half together (3 parts) then
do the same with the other side and add them together in a straight line. Hope I explained this well. Should work fine and you will have a nice lone star. Edit: I think you will have to do some math or use graph paper to figure out the angles for the setting triangles. |
i was thinking i might have to do this but was wondering if there was an easyer way hopfully i can figure this out its the center for a quilt im donating for a fundraise so it has to look good.

The classic 6 Point Star is the Star of David. Yours is unique, haven't seen this before, maybe you can be the one to give it a name.

Whatever you call it, it is beautiful. Wonderful colors.

hey how many points dose the star off bethleham have is it 6 or 8? maybe thats what i made.
|
If you continued in the 60 degree idea, would putting in 2 60 degree triangles work on each side indent? You would end up with a hexagon shape? Would that be easier to continue?
|
No matter what you call it, I call it beautiful!!!!

Yours is quite pretty no matter what you call it. |
Beautiful star. love the blue.

If you did a triangle - that was 30-60-90 degrees you should be able to sew them to each side of your diamonds before you sew your diamonds together - and avoid y seams.
Or if you wanted one solid triangle the large angle should be 120 and the two small angles 30 degrees |
ok that sounds like it should work ill see what i can do hopfully i can get it done tonight. thanks everyone for your advice and compliments.

I would think you can call it a Lone Star. A Lone Star is a single star, and that is what you have. You can name it Six Point Lone Star. That would work. I think it is beautiful.
|
I don't "know" patterns names, but know I like yours and ALWAYS love anything done in blues! Very pretty.
|
Very nice. The colors flow well. I'm guessing it need to be bigger so what goes around next?

Call it the Lindy Star. I like the aplique idea.
It is really pretty. |
I think you have just made up your own unique pattern. I'm not sure about the math, but perhaps you could use tissue paper to make a pattern for the background pieces, or simply applique it to a larger background. Either way, it's lovely.

You made a beautiful Star of David and in my favorite color combination!

it can be called the star of David or the jewish star ?

Your "6-point" Star colors are great! Keep trying!
The Lone Star is not so easy. The strips are actually cut at a 45 degree angle. I had initially brought the pattern from a LQS and could not understand them at all. Yes I knew I was getting a little ahead of myself by buying the pattern and all the material for a California King Quilt 5 years ago. I just knew I had to have it! Well I sat on it until this year. I found in a Clothide Catalog (& it is on their website) a Lone Star Wall Hanging Kit. It comes with the fabric for the top, backing, binding and includes the batting as well. Well to make a long story short, the pattern was very easy to understand and the cost for the kit was a very reasonable price. I pieced it and quilted it in 1 weekend. The directions are for an advanced beginner who wants to try something difference. I suggest that you buy the kit and try it! It is really worth it. |
Nice job.
