How do you organized your projects?
I have a few that I'm working on, and it's all in its' own tote right now. As you can see from my sewing room situation, I like to drag my project down stairs to work in the living room so this is what works for now. However, I'd like to be more organized. I don't like seeing all those totes on the floors in my sewing room. Any suggestion? |
I bought a lot of the big square white craft boxes at WalMart and put each project in one box. They stack on a shelf and look nice. There is a place to put a label on the front of the box too.
|
Thanks for the great suggestion! I'll have to look into it.

I'm sure there are other methods of storing your project. Let's hear!
|
I love the ArtBin super satchels; and they are acid free. They hold 12 1/2" blocks so nicely too.
|
I use the heavy duty plastic bags that curtains, comforters, sheets come it. I even like the two gallon zip lock bags.

When I cut out a quilt I put all the pieces in a two gallon ziploc bag. That way it all stays together til I start it.
|
I like to use the plastic zipper storage bags as. Depends on the project size but most often I use the one gallon and two gallon size.
Another idea: One of the ladies in our class goes to the local pizza place and asks them if they will give or sell new pizza boxes. She says that most often they just give her one or two at a time. I don't think she has asked for more than two at a time tho. She says the medium size is perfect for 12" blocks. Easy to transport to class too. DeeDee |
Target just had a $5 sale on the large plastic storage bins with snap-lock tops. I stocked up on them since I'm organizing my stash (trying to). I use the 2 and 3 gal. ziploc storage bags for projects I'm currently working on and store them on the bookcase shelf so I can see them to keep me reminded to get busy.
|
I have to cart my stuff back and forth from the bedroom to dining room. The 2 gallon ziploc bags work best for me.
|
I use the plastic storage containers, around the shoebox size. They usually only cost a dollar or so. the whole project goes into one container, along with the pattern that I plan to use. That way I don't look at the fabric that I have intended for a specific project and not know what I had planned. I've done that before and sat scratching my head trying to figure out was I was doing.

I am fighting a losing battle with the space in my place. My UFO's are in a good sized plastic box under the bed. My current projects vary in their placement. One I just started and have most of the fabric cut, but waiting for an order of more of one color. I cut the binding and border first so that it is all one piece. This is in plastic bags with slips of paper saying what it is. I am working on one that is a copy of Twistedstitcher's Boxed Squares. It is on the table right now, and I pray that the kitties leave it alone.

Yesterday I laid a quilt out on my bed, (to big for the design wall). Of course both kitties had to inspect what I was doing on "their" bed.
I don't use the pizza boxes bc you can't see what's in them. I like clear bags or boxes. |
I really like the clear plastic boxes or zip-loc bags for my projects as I can easily see the ufos that I can work on whenever I go to the shelf. The opague boxes seem to put them out of sight/out of mind; not intentionally, just get attracted to new projects and forget they are there. But then it's like a lost Christmas present when they reappear. I am very fussy about the lids of the plastic boxes though. I hate the frustration if they don't open easily. Even the dollar store boxes have some lids that open very easily so it doesn't mean you must pay a higher price.

Thanks for all the suggestion.
I really don't like the look of all those totes laying on my floors. |
I'm sorry. Can't really help you with this. Although I have a variety of things going at once ... one being hand quilted; one waiting to be marked for hand quilting; one on a quilting frame to be machine quilted; blocks being embroidered and stored in boxes for future quilts, I never have more than 1 quilt being cut & pieced at any time. It's easy to keep everything I need for that quilt together in something big enough to where the pieces all lay flat.

What projects are you working on now?
|
Let's see, there's a quilt that I'm working on for my niece. I really need to finish this one.
I also making a couple of totes for my friends and family. I made the mistake of making one for my niece then my sisters saw it, then they asked for them. Then on and on, it hasn't stop yet. I think I just have to tell them no! LOL. My friends are also asking for them. |
I have different sized plastic drawer modules for different sizes of fabric--then sorted by color. I use the plastic shoeboxes for fat quarter sized fabrics. I use smaller three-drawer units for tiny pieces (good for paper piecing). Then I use the larger three-drawer units for yardage. Works for me, and I like that I can see through the boxes so that I know what's in a drawer without opening.
Also, I keep separate bins for works in progress or projects I'm going to start soon. |
I would try and find a little storage cabinet for the downstairs so you weren't having to tote them up and down all the time. Clean up would be so much easier that way too. If you are going to use those large plastic bags, a floor of the coat closet would work. Or hang them up if they aren't too heavy.

A friend gave me several baskets in different sizes. I have found this works great to store a project, fabric, pattern and notions. Also helps for putting together future projects. They also look pretty!
|
I put projects in progess in zip-lock bags. I put tops that need to be quilted on a hanger and place the binding in a zip-lock and attach it to the hanger and hang it in a closet.
|
I use zip lock bags and the heavier plastic zippered bags as well. I like to see what's in them at a glance. I store them side by side on a shelf, like books.
|
zip lock bags, who would have thought?

I have never posted before...love the forum. Really enjoy the pictures and all the info that is shared. I want to share this bit about pizza boxes. They work great..I have projects in a couple. Several in my quilt group use pizza boxes. The down side----I heard this about a quilter from another group. She left her "pizza box" sitting on the table and her husband decided to straighten up and thinking it felt empy he threw it in the trash. The trash truck ran before she realized what happened. So tape a sign or picture on the front. A couple ladies in my group put the boxes together with the print side to the inside---which is easy. In this case I would put a piece of muslin or a hand towel under my project so the project would not be on the print. Oh, and I have no idea what happened with the husband....sure it was not a happy time!
|
if you go to the print shops, they can and will save the boxes (with lids!) for you.
Also, I go to payless shoe store, they have some great sizes, the bigger boot sizes, they will give them to you. then you can either cover with paper or shelf paper. Look on You Tube also, you will find some great ideas, one was to cover a pizza box ! try asking them for 2 boxes per week. |
ooooops!! Been a while since I posted...I had forgot that I had posted in the past. sorry!
|
oh I would think that would be easy enough to mistake, my hubby would prly have done the same thing. BUT, I saw on You Tube how to cover the pizza box. the video will show you from start to finsh how to cover it with fabric ! No mistaking it now ! hehe

You mean in piles around the room isn't organized?
I try but my dreams extend my boxes ... |

Here is a pic of my sewing room shelves with the shoe box size and the bigger size craft boxes. I have since reorganized the shelves and have more of the bigger boxes.
|
I use pizza boxes, clean ones I got from the eateries. I store my quilt blocks in them. I have several boxes for different projects-in-progress. I put a big note on the top naming what quilt blocks are in the box. One box has the picture of the quilt. Makes it nice when the mood hits for which project to work on. for my fabrics, I have the bins, color separated and label also on the top and side.
|
I use decorative baskets and storage bins...since I am always working on several thinsg at once it seems..my ideas are numerous and as new things come out..I always have to get them...although I put out alot of projects as much ..just not as many as I add...
