Ott Lamp - question
Can anyone provide feed back on the Ott Lamps I've seen at Jo-Ann's? Which one do you have, is there one you wish you did have (for example - going to guild meetings/retreats, or having one that clamps down, etc)?
I've seen them in the past, but have never bothered to buy one, mainly due to the price. With Black Friday coming up, I'm considering these as an option provided the price is right. Or is there another lighting solution out there that you like? Thanks :) |
I have ott lamps. I have in my sewing room and one floor model in my familyroom . They will probably be on sale for the holidays.
I have one in my studio that has a heavy base with a flexible neck (?) and a white plastic lamp shade. That one stays on my sewing table as it is pretty heavy. I also have the one that hinges open and closed and comes in lots of bright colors (it's maybe 12" tall) and that one goes to retreats or classes with me or I bring it in the house when I want to sew at my dining room table. It is very light and portable. They are both Otts that I probably got at 40-50% off at Hobby Lobby and Joanns. They are both worth every penny I paid for them.

I bought my husband a Ott floor lamp for his cross stitching. He loves it. I have a table model for my embroidery machine, I love mine also. I never seem to have enough light when I sew, so they come in handy. I used 40-50% coupons from JoAnn's to purchase them.
Had a floor model did not last but a couple of months. New bulb did not help whole fixture went out. Have not purchased another, a little gun shy. This was probably just a fluke but they are kind of $$.
I have a 24 watt Ott light. It is a floor model. I also have a smaller one that really does not provide a good light. I did buy replacement blubs at Joanne's with a coupon. I love the 24 watt!
I have 6 Ott lights (love them!). I buy them from JoAnn's when they are 50% off. There is one more I would like to have that holds small notions and has a handle that you can carry to class. I think it runs about $40 (50% off). The bulbs last a long time, I can't remember the last time I changed one.
Wow, thanks for all the responses! Glad to know that the coupons work on those, for some reason I had it in my head they were exempt from it!
I keep toying with the idea of buying an Ott lamp, especially since I'm getting my own *small* sewing room. But, seems I remember someone on here saying that whenever they discontinue a lamp, they discontinue the bulb for it as well. Can anyone confirm that? I don't want to spend the $$ on the lamp only to discover a year later than I cannot replace the bulb.
I have the floor model and desktop model and love them! I bought the floor model at Tuesday Morning for a fraction of the price at JoAnns (don't know if you have a Tuesday Morning in AZ). I also bought the desktop at Costco or Sams.
I have 2 desk top models with flexible necks. I've had them for 2 1/2 years with no trouble at all. One is by my sewing machine and the other is by my stove to supplement my kitchen lighting. Still using the original bulbs. I bought both at Big Lots for $19.99 each.
I have the table 12" hinged lamp and loved it until the small plastic gear that holds the hinged light in place broke. Perfect on the sewing cabinet next to the machine. Hubby repaired it and it's holding together for now. For what it cost the plastic piece that broke should have been replaced.

I have two. One is a floor standing with an adjustable goose neck. I love this, and won't sew much without it.
I have a table top sized one that have on a shelf over my sewing table, and it really helps when auditioning fabrics. I usually like my choices when I have used the ott light than when I have depended on the regular light (ceiling light). I am glad I have them. I bought the floor one at JoAnn's when it was on sale, and the other was from a LQS. But a joyce888 said there are other places that sell them. My local Michael's sells them, but in limited sizes. It may not be Ott brand, but there are "daylight" lamps at most stores. Some hardware stores sell the "daylight" bulbs that you could put into any lamp. |
I have been contemplating purchasing an Ott Lamp. My work space is light deficient. Will be watching the replies for information to help me make a decision.
I have an Ott lamp, but prefer to use a halogen light. It is much brighter. It does get hotter, so you can't touch it.
I have one over my cutting table, and one over my sewing machine. I bought the folding Ott lamps for my late mother, who used them for reading and had one on her kitchen table for reading the newspaper. My sister inherited them, she loves them too!!

I have both the floor model (which I use all the time in my sewing room) and a small foldable one that I take to retreats. I love both. Got each with coupons from JoAnn's...makes the price more acceptable.

I have 2 floor lamps, one over my cutting table and the other by my sewing machine. Love them!!! I'm waiting for a good sale to get one with the magnifier on it to put by my chair for cross stitching or embroidery while watching tv.
I have one that hooks on to my sewing table. I can bend it in different directions depending
on which end of the table I,m working. They are wonderful. Like others have said, wait till JoAnns has a sale or use the coupons. |
My only complaint is that I had bought a lamp and then about 6 months later I had problems getting a replacement bulb for it. In the end, I believe I called the company and asked them to ship one to me. If I remember right, I couldn't find the replacement because they stopped making that model. (After spending quite a bit of money on the light, I wasn't happy that I ran into this problem.) I have a problem with my eyesight and I definitely like to use the Ott lamps when I'm sewing. Even though I had this problem with getting a replacement bulb, I went ahead and bought a couple of other Ott lamps for the different areas in my house where I sew.

I prefer them to floor lamps I have them every place we read or work on hobbies
You'd be better to buy a cheap standing lamp (or table lamp), buy an Ott bulb for about $10 and enjoy the light!! There are also HD florescent bulbs. Enjoy!
I have a floor model with magnifying glass and pattern holder (like a big clip) on it along with the light. LOVE IT! Bought at JoAnn's last year on sale.
Love them. I bought mine at an office supply store.
My DH bought me a floor ott lamp, when I was crocheting. Have not had to change the bulb yet. Love it. Waiting for a table one to go on sale and would not hesitate buying one.
I'm glad you asked this question. I was wondering where I could find on. Didn't have to read far to find out.
I have the large floor model Ott light (without the magnifier) when I got it they were on sale for 1/2 price at Joanns.. but it was still close to $100. was thinking it over and went next door to Tuesday morning and was looking through their craft items and found the SAME lamp for $59.. you better believe I snapped it up.
I love it. I have a small one I got at Hobby Lobby for 60% off during the holidays.. it's a table model. |
I've had a floor model Ott light with the goose neck I use at the sewing machine. It is such a bright light and my eyes are bad. When I purchased the light 3-4 years ago I bought a replacement blulb as well. Haven't used it yet. Sometimes it is on all day and up until about 8:00 at night. It's been really great.
I have three and would not hesitate to buy another one the need arises.
i have the floor model Ott light in my sewing room , it also has the magnifying glass attached to it and i loveeeeeee it , great to use when i have to rip something apart
Well if you want it just for your house. I went to wal-mart and bought at 12$ lamp with the lite that comes down to you on the flexable arm and an up light at the top. Then I bought two of the light bulbs Joanns has with my 50% coupon )(pay for them seperate with 2 coupons) and get 50 to 40% off each. or use 1 - 50% and the instore 40%)and that is just wonderful. I just could not see paying that much. if you buy the small ot lite to travel with and you don't like it you can return it. Keep your reciept. I work at Joanns part time.

I have FOUR Ott lamps and besides having to replace a bulb ever decade, I am NOT complaining. I bought the basic flip light from Quilt Market in the early 90s, then I bought the stand light with the base. Then I bought the screw on lamp for the table where my sewing machine sits and last I bought a desk lamp when one of those design places that was having a going out of business sale. Except for the last lamp, I got them all at JAF with a 50% off coupon. I haven't seen them for less than that. Have fun at the sale!!! That is the BEST SALE !!!
