I've been wanting to add another Ott Light to my sewing space, but had balked at the price for the floor lamps. I almost picked one up at JoAnn Fabrics this weekend when they were on sale; however, they didn't have the model I wanted. The prices ranged from $75-99 on sale.

When I was at Lowe's hardware store about an hour later looking at lamps, I happened upon an Ott Light floor lamp for $55.00 which looks remarkably like the one that JoAnn sells for $180 online. The biggest difference is that mine is black, which I prefer. They had very good prices on one of the table models as well.

Cheers, K

Isn't that just amazing!! Amazing what the profit margin for these stores are isn't it.

sewmuchmore 08-09-2010 10:21 AM

That goes to show us that we have to think out of the box when buying things for our quilting rooms. And the best part is that you saved $ for more fabric.

Bluphrog 08-09-2010 10:26 AM

You can also sign up on their website and they will send you notices of sales, specials, etc. They will run 2 for 1 sales periodically, too

2wheelwoman 08-09-2010 10:30 AM

I got an awesome deal on a Ott-lite from Lowe's a few years ago. I don't remember the price, but it was like 1/3 of what the same model was at Joanns.

jrhboxers 08-09-2010 10:35 AM

You will want to check, but my Lowe's actually carries the replacement light bulbs for about a third of the cost at the fabric stores. When I find them, I always purchase a couple because they don't have them all the time and they go fast.

CorgiNole 08-09-2010 10:39 AM

Yep - mine carries the replacement bulbs as well. I was very excited to see that.

Cheers, K

craftybear 08-09-2010 10:52 AM

thanks for letting us know that Lowe's carries Ott lights as well as Joann's

costumegirl 08-09-2010 11:04 AM

Great to know!!

Ginaky 08-09-2010 11:09 AM

I got one at Big Lots for around $30 that is also very similar to one of the ones they sell at JoAnn's. It's a bendable floor lamp. I keep it by my recliner for reading and hand sewing.

You should look at the markup at RV stores!! SHEESH. And I found a catalog for jewelry....one the professionals use. The markup on jewelry is 70%!!!!!

lalaland 08-09-2010 12:39 PM

Replacement bulbs are the issue with these lamps so if you buy one, be sure you buy a couple of replacement bulbs. Once they don't carry that same lamp, they will stop carrying the replacement bulbs. You can find them online but I had to order 6 for my lamp at a time which can be pricey.

clem55 08-09-2010 02:11 PM

Is the Ott a brand name, or the kind of lighting? Is it what they call a full spectrum bulb? I need a good light to sew and read by, so really need this info.

CorgiNole 08-09-2010 05:02 PM

Ott is a particular brand of the full spectrum light. I use mine to scrapbook, cross stitch and quilt by.

Cheers, K

I bought mine at Lowes, as well. Much cheaper to begin with and it was on sale so that made it an even better deal!

Absolutely right!!! I've been buying supplies at our local ADAP (American Discount Auto Parts) store. They have a small section with RV supplies much less expensive than Camping World. If I wasn't so P.O.'d at Walmart for getting rid of their fabric section, I'd buy stuff there.

fancifrock 08-10-2010 01:15 PM

Boy if you can get the same Ott light for $55, get it. They are just great. I use one all the time.

Jeanniejo 08-10-2010 01:33 PM

I got an Ott floor lamp at Hobby Lobby that I found in the 85% off section. I asked the clerk to plug it in to see if it worked, it didn't! I pushed the bulb the rest of the way in and it lit!!! Love my new $15.00 Ott lamp

grannypat7925 08-10-2010 02:07 PM

I also have an Ott light (bendible floor model) that my daughter purchased for cheap at Big Lots. Love it! Always pays to check around and not be in too big a hurry. There are places where things we need for quilting, etc. are much cheaper than at the fabric stores.

davis2se 08-11-2010 02:54 AM

I have purchased 3 of the floor lamps - at Big Lots. The first 2 were only $29.99 each. The last one I bought to take to our cabin in Michigan this summer was $39.99, but still a bargain. They all came with an extra bulb, and they look and work just like the actual Ott lights.

katsewnsew 08-11-2010 03:04 AM

I have 2 Ott Lites and one standing lamp that I bought at Big Lots. Only difference was the price! Big Ott Lite was over $100, table model was $79, and Big Lots lamp was $30. Such a deal!

finch 08-11-2010 04:24 AM

My son is a tattoo artist and he swears by the lights that they sell at Big Lots. They look like the Ott lights except the tops are wider. He prefers them over the Ott lights for his close up work and they run around $39.00. I have two of them and I also like them better!

Dear quilt/sewist friends,
Please be careful using your Ott Lites around your computerized sewing machines if you have a LCD viewing screen. A good friend of mine ruined her $8,000 Janome.
She kept her ott lite shining directly on her machine...and the LCD window. One day she turned her machine on and she had nothing on the LCD...she couldn't see what mode/style she was sewing and could not change modes or anything. When she contacted Janome, they said that she would have to send the machine to Janome and it would cost about half of the machine cost to replace the computerized screen. This has been 7 years ago, perhaps the display screens are more durable to light sources....I continue to hear that sunlight and these lamps can do damage to these screens. I use my Ott lite all the time, but cover the display screen when I turn on the lamp. Better safe than sorry.

Check to see if they still have their RV dept. Ours got rid of that too, so now the pink winterizing bottles are much more expensive at Camping World. Unfortunately WalMart has a reputation of coming in, running a lot of small businesses out that just can't compete, and then dropping that dept. so customers are left high & dry. WalMart is not a place I like to shop.

catrancher 08-11-2010 08:08 AM

I've found some great buys here:

http://www.jhittlesewing.com/sewing/catalog.php

Unfortunately, I don't see Ott on the list. There might be some other lamps though. They are offering wholesale prices to the public, and I've had good luck. Things come FAST too.

dianna1234 08-11-2010 08:12 AM

Glad to have this info on Ott lights and bulbs as I am "Ott dependent" while sewing.

Lowe's offers military discount of 10% at all times, in case anyone is in that category. Every little bit helps.

finch 08-11-2010 08:33 AM

I just got a JoAnn's coupon today for 40% off on their Ott Lamps good thru August 28th.

nwm50 08-11-2010 08:45 AM

big lots had the table version just like joAnn's for $30 !

Great tip---I've never heard anything but good about the Ott lights!

chamby 08-11-2010 09:03 AM

I've always said that not everything needs to come from the quilt or fabric shop.

fancifrock 08-11-2010 09:15 AM

Be careful when buying the Ott lites at such a low price. They might be discontinued models and once they are gone, you can't get replacement bulbs. If there are bulbs where you get the light on sale, it is always wise to pick up a couple of spares. They really do last a long time. Good luck

Linda - K. 08-11-2010 09:20 AM

I didn't realize Lowe's carried them. I have bought at JoAnns and Michael's when on sale.

QuilterInVA 08-11-2010 11:20 AM

I got both the floor lamp and the table lamp from Big Lots and it was less than $60 for both AND they had replacement bulbs in the package. They are just as good as Ott and I've had them for about 2 years now.

sewalot 08-11-2010 01:54 PM

I too have an Ott lite I purchased at Michael's with a coupon. Never chekded Big Lots! Thanks for that info. I want to purchase more of the lights so I don't have to continuously move the one that I have. Susie Sew-a-lot

Sassy913 08-11-2010 02:07 PM

I've been buying the HP floor lamps, almost identical to the Ott Light but just $29.95 for the table style, and $39.95 for the floor with gooseneck and all. Order extra elements at the same time for less too. I've had two floor models for over 3 years now and have yet to change elements. I love them!I would rather buy something as good for less than pay the ridiculous prices...that just leaves me with more to buy material. Yippee!!! A real Win-Win.

sewmom 08-11-2010 02:31 PM

i got a full spectrum light at Menards for $19.99 for my vacation home. regular price is $29.99. it seems to be similar-the bulbs are smaller- to the Ottlite.

Really??? I use mine all the time right in front of my Bernie machine to increase the light and so I can use the magnifier. I thought it was a great way to help me do stitching right on the edge and any other finicky work. Now I'm going to have to find another light source and magnifier!!! I don't want anything to happen to my machine's screen!!

doxieloverred 08-11-2010 03:51 PM

I picked up an Ott Light at JoAnn's this weekend for $24.99! They didn't have a floor lamp marked down but this is a tabletop with a long goose neck that can be bent wherever you need it. It is WONDERFUL!! It also comes with an attachment to make it a clip-on light on a table. I must have looked like that girl in the Exorcist when I saw it--my head swiveled so fast I almost hurt myself! The next second it was in my cart ready for the happy ride home. :) I love it!

katiebear1 08-11-2010 04:21 PM

What is an Ott light? I have horrible lighting in my sewing room.

laurelkal 08-11-2010 06:12 PM

I lucked out and got an Ott high def Chadwick floor lamp from Joanne's, which they usually sell at $160, for $35 as an online Black Friday special. Hurray!
