So I guess my mistake was that I coloured it when it was wet ... good to know, I'll not repeat that one!

It ran before I washed it ... I have learned that I should not have coloured it while it was wet!

It may have run more than expected because of wet batting. Just a thought.

Still....your quilt is just gorgeous. I like it as it is, even though you didn't plan it that way.

I know how to fix it, but it is a bit hard on fabric... We have a product here in Australia called 'Exit Mould'. It is used to clean really bad bathroom stuff. So you can find a similar product over there, the ingredients are; Sodium Hydroxide 2.4g/L Alkaline Salts 1.2g/L Sodium Hypochlorite 42g/L. It is not pure bleach, but a mix.

I have used it to remove small colour runs by dabbing the run with a cotton bud dipped in Exit Mould so the cotton but is fairly damp but not really wet. A bit tedious, but it got rid of the colour and didn't yellow the fabric. Obviously you need to be careful not to let it get on the colour you want to keep! Once you set the remaining colour with an iron, wash the fabric to remove the Exit Mould.

This same stuff does other amazing things - it will take a coffee stain off a painted wall without changing the paint colour in any way. Got brown stained fingers/fingernails from beetroot, plums, assorted plant material, hair colour? Little squirt onto your hands and it vanishes instantly. (Then wash your hands really well and use some hand-cream...)

This will only work on cotton fabric if you want to return the cotton to white!

I am so sorry for your lovely quilt. I would try washing it again with color catchers. This is just so sad. hopefully you haven't heat set the flowers yet. Wash with cold water. That is the only thing I can think of to rescue this beautifully made quilt.

if you have not heat set, perhaps rubbing the painted areas with dawn and washing the quilt might take out the color. Then dry, re color with medium, then heat set. Keep trying for the expert, I hope she can help. Best wishes.

I think you have to set it with an iron. It is an ink so its permanent

you can use the blue elmer's glue around your drawing to stop the bleeding. put a narrow line around the area and allow to dry before starting your work, it will wash out when you are done. I usually dry color and add water as I want with a brush. if there is a break in the glue line it will bleed through so be careful. my art quilt group uses this prosses often. good luck with your quilt, I would add a pale wash to blend in the run colors. what have you got to lose!
