painting on fabric - intense pencils

I wanted to try something different and I did this mini wholecloth and then painted the tulips and the center with derwent inktense pencils.
Here's the steps I did ... FMQd the whole thing, then washed it (had to remove all of my markings!) While it was wet I coloured the tulips and the center piece with the inktense pencils. Kept it flat overnight to dry Woke up to this: first picture is just the one flower - the paint ran??? Washed the whole thing to see if I could get it off where it ran ... and ended up with the second picture (whole quilt) Does anyone have any ideas why / how it ran when it was laying flat? Does anyone have any ideas how to make it blend / fix? Thanks very much, Marion |

Thank you ... no, I didn't. However, I watched a different video (LOL) and the woman who did hers did it like I did and the put the fabric medium on when it was dry - because the stitching would hold the colour in place? hmmm I'm not a happy camper hahaha |
Oh dear ... so sad on such a lovely piece.
Sure hope that you can get it fixed up. I think there is some sort of a "fixative" that you use. Check MaryKatherine's blog, as I know she has used the Inktense Pencils. Or PM her. Good Luck! |

That is sad. Did you heat set your painting with an iron before washing? I have used Inktense pencils with a fabric medium, and when totally dry (next day) I heat set with a warm/hot iron, the temperature dictated by the fabric, and then washed at no higher than 40. I have no idea how to fix your current problem though, I am sorry.

I would think that colouring on damp fabric would allow the colour to spread as the quilt dried.
As to fixing it, I might get a toothbrush and screen, mix up a variety of the same colours of the pencils in acrylic paint....I would then dip the toothbrush in paint and rub the brush over the screen at about 8 inches? And add dots of rainbow colours over the whole surface of the quilt. We used to use this method in school to add a spray of colours on a surface. Some rubbed a toothbrush over a comb to spray the paint for larger spots. You could also use a mist bottle of paint to add colours. Good Luck and with whatever you decide to do, try it on a sample first. |

Color from Inktense pencils will run to any wet area. When I use them on fabric I dampen just the area where I want the color and if any of the adjacent fabric absorbs water from the dampened area, then the color will run into that area. The stitching does not prevent the color from running in my experience. Sorry this has happened to your quilt. I hope you can find a way to fix it.
