One that you can get from your local library ;)

lindagor 12-04-2010 05:12 AM

If you don't want a book there are lots of free paper piecing patterns and instructions on the internet. I've gotten lots of great stuff that way. I agree about books by Carol Doak. She's great!

gollytwo 12-04-2010 05:26 AM

http://www.amazon.com

There's an Alex Anderson book for about $10 + s/h

Anita Grossman Solomon is considered the founding mother of paper piecing. You can get her book used for $1.99 + s/h

Midwestmary 12-04-2010 05:31 AM

Any Carol Dorak book is a good investment - clear, concise directions. Also check out her website for good tips. enjoy paper piecing - it is addictive - I'm warning you :)

Carol Doak is excellent but so is anything by Nancy Mahoney. She was in my quilt guild when I lived in Florida and I got to see her beautiful quilts up close. Here is a picture of one I paper pieced a few years ago. I received a second place for it in a quilt show. it was so much fun to make and had over 2000 pieces in it. You will love paper piecing!

featherweight 12-04-2010 05:55 AM

I certainly agree with the majority.. Carol Doak, she has some very good books.

sidmona 12-04-2010 06:36 AM

Carol Doak is the best IMHO, but with paper piecing be warned; you either love it or hate it. Hope you are one of the ones who love it.

sewhappy30 12-04-2010 07:30 AM

DeeBooper I love your quilt, it is beautiful. I just finished my first paper piecing project. I LOVED it. It is a little time consuming but the results are beautiful with paper piecing. I made a Welcome banner that has a different block to change out each month. I just finished December's block so I could hang it up now.

I have the Carol Doak DVD. I have to to see something done I can't do much with books. After watching it I was ready to go and did a great job I think. The DVD was so well explained and I could stop it and rewind if I needed more help.

Now I am confident that I could do it on my own no problem, it's that easy to learn. You won't regret learning this technique the results are amazing. Good luck!

patchsamkim 12-04-2010 07:34 AM

Definitely Carol Doak books!

And I agree, that you will either love or hate paper piecing. It is very precise though especially for difficult pointy patterns....and sometimes the only way you could make a pattern come out.

amma 12-04-2010 08:41 AM

If you are a visual learner, Carol Doak has book/video combos too :D:D:D

Hi Rhoda, I am new at this message board and you are the first message I have responded to. I teach foundation paper piecing. I have about 6 books and they are all good. The 2 biggest ones I have are:
"300 Paper Piecing Quilt Blocks" by Carol Doak. It comes with a CD of all designs you can keep on your computer and then just print anyone of them when you want to use the design. it is by "That Patchwork Place" publisher.$29.95 .
101 Log Cabin Blocks by Linda Causee. ASN Publishing.Book #4181
$18.95 :-) I will give you the names of the other books I have when I can dig them out of the pile. Marty Byrnes Mesa, AZ

Connie in CO 12-05-2010 05:27 AM

jolo 12-05-2010 05:41 AM

when I first started to learn pp,I hated it, It felt backwards, wasteful of fabric and so very slow. Now I love it. so stick to it and learn it. C Doake helped me.

quiltingaz 12-05-2010 05:42 AM

Carol Doak definitely.

And true, you will love it or hate it. I love it and the precision you can get.

I love the posted quilt from Nancy Mahoney. Will have to look into that.

sharkee 12-05-2010 06:53 AM

Totally agree with Carol Doak. I started out with her dvd and have since bought a couple of her books. I also joined her yahoo group and it is so informative with a lot of free blocks

sahm4605 12-05-2010 06:55 AM

carol doak is great and youcan also get many pp's blocks and quilts off the internet. there is also Jinney Buyers website she does great work.

steelecg 12-05-2010 07:34 AM

Carol Doak is great and she has an awesome dvd that takes you step by step. I don't care for her paper as it is hard to see through, but you can use vellum, or plain tracing paper

Momof3Es 12-05-2010 07:37 AM

A newbie question...what's the difference between paper piecing and machine piecing? Sorry if this is stupid but I would like to know.

The difference is when you are paper piecing you are sewing your fabric to a design actually on the paper, once your design or block is all sewn then you tear away the paper and you have perfect points since you sew on the lines.

Machine piecing is referring to using your sewing machine as opposed to hand sewing.

And yes you are still machine piecing with paper piecing, i hope I didn't confuse you more. Check out Carol Doak website you can see examples.

Marty 12-05-2010 08:33 AM

Simple printer paper works. No need to buy special paper.

You should check what your library has - you could buy a book after that if you find it really great. Also, check out Marcia Hohn's website, http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore.html . Many of her free block patterns are paper-pieced and she has general instructions to introduce you to paper-piecing as well. Once you do one or two blocks, you won't need to spend the money on an introductory book. Marcia has hundreds of blocks for you to select from. Then you could use your saved money to buy more advanced ones, like Carol Doak's "50 Fabulous Paper-pieced Stars" or Peggy Martin's "Quick Strip Paper-piecing". Some blocks can only be done well with paper-piecing techniques so enjoy your journey.

fireworkslover 12-05-2010 02:51 PM

I learned by following the instructions in a book by Valori Wells, "Radiant New York Beauties". That book has 14 paper pieced projects in it. There are instructions in there for enlarging the patterns as well as close-ups of the quilts to give you some ideas for fmq. I've never used special paper to print the pattern on, just reg. paper that goes in my printer. When I've made blocks larger than what will fit in my printer, then I've used tracing paper I bought in a pad (19" X 24" ). Just used a thin Sharpie marker. It tears off easier than reg. paper.

awf60 12-05-2010 04:19 PM

DeeBooper, that quilt leaves me speechless. Lovely!

kwiltkrazy 12-05-2010 05:54 PM

I agree with everyone Carol Doaks is the best. And it is true, you will either love it or hate it, I'm a pp lover.

jitkaau 12-05-2010 06:10 PM

Judy Mathieson has good books as well.

lbc 12-05-2010 06:22 PM

I just took a class (my first in paper piecing) from Peggy Martin and her instructions seem to be pretty clear. You might want to check out one of her books.

kolacequeen 12-05-2010 06:47 PM

Quilterscache.com has good instructions for paper piecing.
