Paper pieced border pattern not matching WWYD?
2 Attachment(s)
I know the ultimate decision is up to me but would this bother, detract in your eyes? I decided not to make this quilt square and like the border shape you see in the bottom left corner of the picture which is the only edge I have actually "finished". Because I picked such a pattern for the joining of the pieces there is not way I can make the wicker- look pattern match around the edges. If I had know where I was going with this I might have picked something less distinct for the edges. If this was your project would finishing it this way bother you? ( I only have 10000 hours in to it so far :)and want to do the right thing whatever that is ). Many thanks!

Going to be gorgeous! You want to leave the quilt edges kind of like a squared scalloped edge? Pretty neat edge and will probably be easier to put a binding on than a traditional scalloped edge since the corners will be at 45 degrees. The wicker fabric looks fine to me as in the picture, it reads like polka dots. If I have completely misunderstood your question, never mind.:D
|
actually, i looked at the pic before reading the post and couldn't figure out what the problem might be. so... no, the mismatched wicker did not bother me. jmho

In my game plan, there is no border. I saw a website that suggests paper piecing to frame the same shape as the very outer edges. sewing it to the front then flipping it to back after quilting so that the back will have that same edge and contrast with the backing fabric.

I think your issue is that you are looking upclose and personal at each piece. The finished project won't be looked at that closely to see any minor imperfection you think you are seeing. The finished project will be looked at as a whole not as individual pieces. Beautiful work!!
|
It took me a couple of seconds to figure out what you were talking about, but now that I've taken a good look, I think it's fine. I don't know what that pattern is, but it's very pretty. I do like the fact that you kept the wicker straight throughout the top..... it would drive me insane if the pattern wasn't matched, up, down and across because I'm a bit obsessive when it comes to things like that not matching. In my opinion, you're doing a fabulous job. I sure wouldn't sweat that corner.

It's beyond beautiful. It will be terrific anyway you finish. I'd probably go with the sew & turn method on this one. Sew the cut backing & batting to the front of the quilt, leave an opening and then turn it right side out. Don't know how large this is but it would work and you'd keep the nice edge you have in that bottom left corner. Love your choices of fabric too.

Thank you all for your replies. This is a version of poc.
|
That's beautiful! No, it would not bother me to have the corner angles in the caning print. Looking thru the photo, my eye even's out the differences and it appears that the white "dots" work together well.
|
My eye doesn't pick up anything wrong. This is going to be gorgeous.

What is the name of this pattern? It is wonderful - I think it is totally gorgeous, and I would never have noticed the "misaligned" border bits if you hadn't mentioned them. Especially after the whole thing is quilted, and has a bit more texture, I doubt anyone would see them.
Your color scheme is great. I can't believe it is possible to make that many busy prints play nicely together...but you certainly have!! Alison |

I wanted to do the actual POC but as I was looking online I found this under " Lucy Boston Headboard" which was just one strip made into a headboard slipcover. I posted it here and no one could tell me the name of the pattern and there was no info on the site except to say it is in a museum, so I just copied it. ( I had already purchased the POC phamphlet from Backdoor Quilts) |
I don't see anything wrong with it. It's a beautiful quilt.
|
imho, I think it will be perfect using your plan to keep the edge shape and not square it off or fill it in. This looks like heirloom standards to me. Fabulous. Love your choice of fabrics for this beauty. Please keep us updated as you progress.

I can't believe what I'm looking at. It is super gorgeous!
|
Yes gorgeous, wow, amazing I love it.
|
I wouldn't change a thing if I were you, it is going to be absolutely fabulous, can't wait to see it finished, beautiful so far!
|
I agree with the others.
Keep doing what you are doing. This is an awesome project and look forward to seeing it when you are done.jan |
I'm with everyone else. The quilt is going to be gorgeous and the wicker fabric reads like well aligned dots. Great job and share again when you are finished.
|
If I read your ?correctly.....you want to leave the edges scallops? I would not put binding on that nor would I birth it...there is an old technique that simply turns the edges of backing and top into each other with a seam and hand sews that together......am I thinking right everyone?
|
I think it's beautiful just as it is.

No, my eyes were too busy looking at all the fussy-cut pieces in the centers of the blocks to notice any mismatching pieces. I think it will be just fine. The blocks are the star of the quilt! Gorgeous!
|
I like what you've done - it's going to be a beautiful quilt, can't wait to see it finished. It's a very unique block.
|
I am in awe of that. It is beautiful and I don't see a problem with anything.

I agree 100% also what an awesome labor of love |
If you are saying there is something wrong with it, I can't find it. It's beautiful! It makes me want to make one! All your fabric choices are wonderful.
|
Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement. I am going to my my husband read this as he just doesn't get it at all :). I used pretty much every fabric I liked at JoAnn's! I don't have much stash... yet!
|
awesome pattern, but I think what really makes it is your choice of fabrics, excellent
|
I think it is great. I love it the way you are doing it.
|
It's stunning! I never would have thought of using the wicker fabric but it looks beautiful. Was it machine paper pieced or EPP?
I sure don't see any problems, even when I reread your post and looked again. And the scalloped edge is lovely. |

I sure don't see any problems, even when I reread your post and looked again. And the scalloped edge is lovely. EPP with glue stick (hides head in shame) I imagine you could partially machine stitch as I think people to Patchwork of the Cross on the machine and this is taken from that. |
What an incredible job of fussy cutting! "Wicker" edging is looking great, as is!
|
It looks great to me. It's going to be awesome when you're finished!

I think your quilt is amazing and when finished is going to be spectacular. Are you going to keep this quilt? If so, will it always bother you the way it is. I, like you, get very fussy with placement and direction of fabric. I mitre my borders because I think it looks better and in the case of your quilt, If I was using the wicker fabric I would probably have cut those diagonal cut piece on the straight of grain to make it look like it is mitred around the edge. You are obviously unsure about your choice of direction of the pattern on the fabric, if you have enough material to have a little play cut a couple of pieces on the straight to replace the diagonal cut and see if your eye is happier with the look. The other question is do you have enough fabric to change your mind? Thank you so much for letting us be involved and like everyone else please, please, please, post pictures of the completed project.

Looks really beautiful from here! May IRL it doesn't line up in which case only you can decide unless you want to mail it to me...lol. Love it so far.
|
Another fan here. I thought your issue was you had run out of that wicker fabric!
I think that it is fabulous- just my type of thing. I didn't know Patchwork of the Crosses before this. Dying to see more pics of this. Keep up the great work! |

Why shame? It's the same thing as basting!, I am doing one with basting and I am going to look into the glue sticks, as it's taking so long to prepare the pieces. Though I must admit I kind of like the mindless work... What stitch and thread did you use to put it together? |
It is stunning just thus far along. Can't wait to see it finished.
