1 Attachment(s)
I wanted to use these fabrics for a baby quilt (for a girl) but am having a hard coming up with a pattern any suggestions?

Thank you,
Candy

nellybelle 08-07-2012 06:28 AM

no idea for a pattern, but I really like your selection of fabrics!!!! I am sure someone will be by with a suggestion for you.

burchquilts 08-07-2012 06:39 AM

If you had one more fabric, you could make a Yellow Brick Road. How about a Trip Around the World? Or Take Five?

Billie G 08-07-2012 06:50 AM

I was just going thru some papers the other day & ran across a"Super-Sized Nine Patch" I don't know where I got it, must be off the 'net. Across the bottom of the page it reads,"Quiltmaker-May/June '06* Copyright @2006 Primedia Inc. All rights reserved" I hope this helps you.

warm wishes to really showcase the print fabric would be nice

cellin 08-07-2012 07:26 AM

do you know where I can find a free pattern for Yellow Brick Road? If I get one more fabric, do you think I should get another solid or another print? my local Joann store did not have much of a selections as far as baby prints go.

thank you for your suggestions!

I was going to suggest a simple block pattern. A 9 patch would be great!

I just looked up the super nine patch and it would be ideal. She could use the prints as the focus fabric in each block then finish out with the solids. I just googled "super size nine patch"

How about something like this? That way you don't have to cut up those cute printed fabrics too tiny.

cellin 08-07-2012 07:39 AM

GrannieAnnie - with the super size nine patch - say I make 3 blocks 1 each with the 3 different prints, then should I mix up the solids I use around the print? I can follow a pattern but coming up with a design is a weakness of mine :-(

cellin 08-07-2012 07:51 AM

lol that answered that..... I just watched a video for making the "Super size nine patch" from what I watched I would only be using 3 fabrics.

That would be MY pick. Such a pretty pattern and BEAUTIFUL fabrics. I am sure anything would be gorgeous with those fabrics. Be sure to post a picture when done.

cellin 08-07-2012 06:26 PM

How about a disappearing 4 patch to 9 patch?

Valerie Scherr 08-07-2012 06:41 PM

my suggestion would be warm wish the pattern is free .

I just done a few with 4-patch with an alternating solid. They were easy and turned so cute.

I make quilts for Project Linus & that's a pattern I've used for them. I think it's on the Quiltmaker web sit (or I have the .pdf if anyone wants it). I love it!

cellin 08-08-2012 04:35 AM

thank you for all the replies, I really appreciate all the suggestions!

Do any of you make a drawing of your quilt before cutting and if so what do you use to do that?

nycquilter 08-08-2012 06:25 AM

I would make Eleanor Burns' Quick Trip around the World with these six fabrics.

llweezie 08-09-2012 04:00 AM

I like to use the Yellow Brick Road patten for a QUICK baby quilt. I also like to throw in some texture blocks, such as Chenille, or crinkle block, or even have thrown in a few flannel block..... it give the quilt more texture and babies like feeling things...

BArnold 08-09-2012 04:24 AM

Go to the site FaveQuilts they have lots of free patterns and even a section for baby quilts. I love this site, I even have my daughter who swore she would never quilt now quilting because she can get free patterns and instructions from this site.

I learned on one of the tutorials in this board that a disappearing nine patch is really gorgeous (and easy!) when you use the big prints in the 4 outer corners and the more solid-looking fabrics in the other spaces, then after sewng the 9 little 5" blocks together to form the 9-patch, cut in half vertically and again in half horizontally. This will keep the more or less solid colored fabrics as smaller 2.5" blocks and keep the larger print as full 5" blocks. Twist and turn the blocks as you can so no seams match and sew together to form whatever pleases your eye. I think this would be gorgeous for your baby quilt! (reminds me of the Yellow Brick Road...but ahhh...so much simpler to put together). Good luck and have fun with this little baby quilt. Your fabrics are really pretty!

Theres free patterns everywhere. Check out several websites, I'm sure you'll come across something you like.
For a girls quilt you might want to include more pink fabrics. check out Ericas.com- Wild Thyme/P&B Textiles.
Essential Flannels(I made this in cottons, for a little girl, turned out great-Wilmington Prints.

I like 4 patch and snowball blocks used together for baby quilts. You can also do pinwheels either flat or dementional for texture. No matter what you choose I am sure the recipient will enjoy and appreciate.

Dix 08-09-2012 07:00 AM

Warm Wishes would be so nice. Fast and cute! Love the colors. Also D9P would work!

lisa in ca 08-09-2012 07:19 AM

Your fabrics would also look really cute in this modern baby quilt pattern called "Colorblock".

What about deciding one solid for each print, then do the block with the center and 4 corners in the print and the sides in solid? Have enough fabric? Or mix it up. Any way it would be cute.

OR use the two big prints for your centers, the green dots for the corners and the solids for the sides. It just looks like it would be a pretty quick pattern no matter what. That way, the green dots will end up forming a half way good sized 4 square block when joined together---------so the green dots would still be quite visible. (also a lot easier to set 2 variations together than three)

thank you for your suggestions!

Why not a solid pink to match the darker pink in your print? Or even a white? Cute fabrics! They will make a great baby girl quilt, whatever pattern you decide on.

helenquilt 08-09-2012 08:46 AM

I love to do pinwheels in 6" blocks with the prints and solids together. Then use the dot for the border Maybe adding a second small border in one solid between the pinwheels and outside border. Then bind with the print pieces even if you have to piece the two colors together.

gmacindy 08-09-2012 09:56 AM

I am finishing a baby quilt, just have the binding left to do. I made a disappearing nine patch. I used the "busy" blocks in the corners. I love how it has turned out.

Latrinka 08-09-2012 11:19 AM

Precious fabrics!

I agree! I'd use the yellow, green and the small dot one for the rails or you may call it the framing strips. One of the prints for the squares in the quilt and the other for one of the borders. Or you could use both of the prints for the squares and whatever you have left for a border. Really pretty fabrics!

mloquilts 08-09-2012 06:21 PM

Have you considered Kaye Wood's 6 hour quilt? Actually it takes more than 6 hours to make it but it is easy & quick. Go to her web site & I think you'll find instructions. I've made many of these & they are cute & practical.

I agree that this is a good one. Google for images. I think you'll especially enjoy it because it turns out looking fancier than it is.

1screech 08-09-2012 08:41 PM

Warm wishes would be a great one. Use the pink green and yellow for the strips and one of the prints for borders and one for blocks and use the polka dots for the back. Just my thought.

cellin 08-10-2012 12:09 PM

I went with Warm Wishes

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I went with Warm Wishes and here is how it turned out, hope you like it.

I plan on using the green for binding.

Love it!! Great choice of pattern!

EC 08-10-2012 05:31 PM

You could try a tube quilt like the one I did here.

Very, very pretty! Good choice of fabrics. Project Linus has some free patterns, if you are ever looking for them.
